    Unusual persistence of superconductivity against high magnetic fields in the strongly-correlated iron-chalcogenide film FeTe:Ox_{x}

    We report an unusual persistence of superconductivity against high magnetic fields in the iron chalcogenide film FeTe:Ox_{x} below ~ 2.5 K. Instead of saturating like a mean-field behavior with a single order parameter, the measured low-temperature upper critical field increases progressively, suggesting a large supply of superconducting states accessible via magnetic field or low-energy thermal fluctuations. We demonstrate that superconducting states of finite momenta can be realized within the conventional theory, despite its questionable applicability. Our findings reveal a fundamental characteristic of superconductivity and electronic structure in the strongly-correlated iron-based superconductors.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

    Structure of Polymer Brushes in Cylindrical Tubes: A Molecular Dynamics Simulation

    Full text link
    Molecular Dynamics simulations of a coarse-grained bead-spring model of flexible macromolecules tethered with one end to the surface of a cylindrical pore are presented. Chain length NN and grafting density σ\sigma are varied over a wide range and the crossover from ``mushroom'' to ``brush'' behavior is studied for three pore diameters. The monomer density profile and the distribution of the free chain ends are computed and compared to the corresponding model of polymer brushes at flat substrates. It is found that there exists a regime of NN and σ\sigma for large enough pore diameter where the brush height in the pore exceeds the brush height on the flat substrate, while for large enough NN and σ\sigma (and small enough pore diameters) the opposite behavior occurs, i.e. the brush is compressed by confinement. These findings are used to discuss the corresponding theories on polymer brushes at concave substrates.Comment: 11 figure

    Powers of 3 with few nonzero bits and a conjecture of Erd\H{o}s

    Full text link
    Using completely elementary methods, we find all powers of 3 that can be written as the sum of at most twenty-two distinct powers of 2, as well as all powers of 2 that can be written as the sum of at most twenty-five distinct powers of 3. The latter result is connected to a conjecture of Erd\H{o}s, namely, that 1, 4, and 256 are the only powers of 2 that can be written as a sum of distinct powers of 3. We present this work partly as a reminder that for certain exponential Diophantine equations, elementary techniques based on congruences can yield results that would be difficult or impossible to obtain with more advanced techniques involving, for example, linear forms in logarithms. Our arguments depend only on properties of rings of the form Z/MZ{\mathbf Z}/M{\mathbf Z}. Because of this, we have made the expositional choice to write this paper in terms that we hope will be accessible to any student of mathematics who has taken a first undergraduate course in abstract algebra.Comment: 19 pages. Absolute properties of the main-sequence eclipsing binary FM Leo

    First spectroscopic and new photometric observations of the eclipsing binary FM Leo are presented. The main aims were to determine orbital and stellar parameters of two components and their evolutionary stage. First spectroscopic observations of the system were obtained with DDO and PST spectrographs. The results of the orbital solution from radial velocity curves are combined with those derived from the light-curve analysis (ASAS-3 photometry and supplementary observations of eclipses with 1 m and 0.35 m telescopes) to derive orbital and stellar parameters. JKTEBOP, Wilson-Devinney binary modelling codes and a two-dimensional cross-correlation (TODCOR) method were applied for the analysis. We find the masses to be M_1 = 1.318 ±\pm 0.007 and M_2 = 1.287 ±\pm 0.007 M_sun, the radii to be R_1 = 1.648 ±\pm 0.043 and R_2 = 1.511 ±\pm 0.049 R_sun for primary and secondary stars, respectively. The evolutionary stage of the system is briefly discussed by comparing physical parameters with current stellar evolution models. We find the components are located at the main sequence, with an age of about 3 Gyr.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to appear in MNRA
