Analyticity of the Susceptibility Function for Unimodal Markovian Maps of the Interval
In a previous note [Ru] the susceptibility function was analyzed for some
examples of maps of the interval. The purpose of the present note is to give a
concise treatment of the general unimodal Markovian case (assuming real
analytic). We hope that it will similarly be possible to analyze maps
satisfying the Collet-Eckmann condition. Eventually, as explained in [Ru],
application of a theorem of Whitney [Wh] should prove differentiability of the

Applied regional monitoring of the vernal advancement and retrogradation (Green wave effect) of natural vegetation in the Great Plains corridor
The author has identified the following significant results. LANDSAT 2 has shown that digital data products can be effectively employed on a regional basis to monitor changes in vegetation conditions. The TV16 was successfully applied to an extended test site and the Great Plains Corridor in tests of the ability to assess green forage biomass on rangelands as an index to vegetation condition. A strategy for using TV16 on a regional basis was developed and tested. These studies have shown that: (1) for rangelands with good vegetative cover, such as most of the Great Plains, and which are not heavily infested with brush or undesirable weed species, the LANDSAT digital data can provide a good estimate (within 250 kg/ha) of the quantity of green forage biomass, and (2) at least five levels of pasture and range feed conditions can be adequately mapped for extended regions
Families of Graphs With Chromatic Zeros Lying on Circles
We define an infinite set of families of graphs, which we call -wheels and
denote , that generalize the wheel () and biwheel ()
graphs. The chromatic polynomial for is calculated, and
remarkably simple properties of the chromatic zeros are found: (i) the real
zeros occur at for even and for odd;
and (ii) the complex zeros all lie, equally spaced, on the unit circle
in the complex plane. In the limit, the zeros
on this circle merge to form a boundary curve separating two regions where the
limiting function is analytic, viz., the exterior and

Mind the gap: A review and recommendations for statistically evaluating Dual Systems models of adolescent risk behavior
According to Dual Systems models (Casey et al., 2008; Luna and Wright, 2016; Steinberg, 2008), a rapidly-developing socioemotional system and gradually-developing cognitive control system characterize adolescent brain development. The imbalance hypothesis forwarded by Dual Systems models posits that the magnitude of the imbalance between these two developing systems should predict the propensity for engaging in a variety of risk behaviors. The current integrative review argues that the excitement generated by the imbalance hypothesis and its implications for explaining adolescent risk behaviors has not been meet with equal efforts to rigorously test this hypothesis. The goal of the current review is to help guide the field to consider appropriate and rigorous methods of testing the imbalance hypothesis. First, we review the analytic approaches that have been used to test the imbalance hypothesis and outline statistical and conceptual limitations of these approaches. Next, we discuss the utility of two longitudinal analytic approaches (Latent Difference Scores and Growth Mixture Modeling) for testing the imbalance hypothesis. We utilize data from a large community adolescent sample to illustrate each approach and argue that Latent Difference Scores and Growth Mixture Modeling approaches enhance the specificity and precision with which the imbalance hypothesis is evaluated
Desisting from Prescription Drug Abuse: An Application of Growth Models to Rx Opioid Users
Modern desistance research has examined many facets of desistance, in terms of theoretical predictors of desistance and recidivism, and in terms of differing types of offending. Though predicting desistance from illegal drug use is among these topics, no research to date has examined the predictors of desisting from prescription opioid abuse. This study uses longitudinal data from 318 prescription opioid users to analyze the effects of various predictors of desistance on declining nonmedical prescription opioid use, with an emphasis on gender differences among participants. Results indicate that theoretical and demographic characteristics correspond with differing rates of decline and further vary by gender
The origin of mid-infrared emission in massive young stellar objects: multi-baseline VLTI observations of W33A
The circumstellar structure on 100 AU scales of the massive young stellar
object W33A is probed using the VLTI and the MIDI instrument. N-band
visibilities on 4 baselines are presented which are inconsistent with a
spherically symmetric geometry. The visibility spectra and SED are
simultaneously compared to 2D axi-symmetric dust radiative transfer models with
a geometry including a rotationally flattened envelope and outflow cavities. We
assume an O7.5 ZAMS star as the central source, consistent with the observed
bolometric luminosity. The observations are also compared to models with and
without (dusty and gaseous) accretion disks. A satisfactory model is
constructed which reproduces the visibility spectra for each (u,v) point. It
fits the silicate absorption, the mid-IR slope, the far-infrared peak, and the
(sub)mm of the SED. It produces a 350 micron morphology consistent with
observations. The 10 micron emission on 100 AU scales is dominated by the
irradiated walls of the cavity sculpted by the outflow. The visibilities rule
out the presence of dust disks with total (gas and dust) masses more than 0.01
Msun. However, optically thick accretion disks, interior to the dust
sublimation radius, are allowed to accrete at rates equalling the envelope's
mass infall rate (up to 10^(-3) Msun/yr) without substantially affecting the
visibilities due to the extinction by the extremely massive envelope of W33A.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&
Tools in the orbit space approach to the study of invariant functions: rational parametrization of strata
Functions which are equivariant or invariant under the transformations of a
compact linear group acting in an euclidean space , can profitably
be studied as functions defined in the orbit space of the group. The orbit
space is the union of a finite set of strata, which are semialgebraic manifolds
formed by the -orbits with the same orbit-type. In this paper we provide a
simple recipe to obtain rational parametrizations of the strata. Our results
can be easily exploited, in many physical contexts where the study of
equivariant or invariant functions is important, for instance in the
determination of patterns of spontaneous symmetry breaking, in the analysis of
phase spaces and structural phase transitions (Landau theory), in equivariant
bifurcation theory, in crystal field theory and in most areas where use is made
of symmetry adapted functions.
A physically significant example of utilization of the recipe is given,
related to spontaneous polarization in chiral biaxial liquid crystals, where

Robust gates for holonomic quantum computation
Non Abelian geometric phases are attracting increasing interest because of
possible experimental application in quantum computation. We study the effects
of the environment (modelled as an ensemble of harmonic oscillators) on a
holonomic transformation and write the corresponding master equation. The
solution is analytically and numerically investigated and the behavior of the
fidelity analyzed: fidelity revivals are observed and an optimal finite
operation time is determined at which the gate is most robust against noise.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure
