    A Three-Pole Substrate Integrated Waveguide Bandpass Filter Using New Coupling Scheme

    A novel three-pole substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) bandpass filter (BPF) using new coupling scheme is proposed in this paper. Two high order degenerate modes (TE102 and TE201) of a square SIW cavity and a dominant mode (TE101) of a rectangular SIW cavity are coupled to form a three-pole SIW BPF. The coupling scheme of the structure is given and analyzed. Due to the coupling between two cavities, as well as the coupling between source and load, three transmission zeros are created in the stopband of the filter. The proposed three-pole SIW BPF is designed and fabricated. Good agreement between simulated and measured results verifies the validity of the design methodology well

    Degree of hydration-based creep modeling of concrete with blended binders : from concept to real applications

    The mechanical behavior of hardening concrete is to a large extent determined by the evolving microstructure as a result of the hydration process. For traditional binder systems, consisting of Portland cement or blast furnace slag cement, the degree of hydration is known to be a fundamental parameter in this respect, enabling a detailed study and accurate prediction of the early-age mechanical behavior, including basic creep. Nowadays, in view of improved sustainability of cementitious materials, binder systems tend to become more complex, consisting of a blend of different powders. As the hydration process and microstructure development are influenced by the inclusion of powders into the binder, the question is raised whether the degree of hydration concept is still applicable to concrete based on complex blended binder systems. In this paper, some experimental results are summarized and the application to real structures is illustrated. Basic creep of hardening concrete with complex blended binders can still be modeled following the degree of hydration concept

    Spectroscopic Observations of Planetary Nebulae in the Northern Spur of M31

    We present spectroscopy of three planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Northern Spur of the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) obtained with the Double Spectrograph on the 5.1 m Hale Telescope at the Palomar Observatory. The samples are selected from the observations of Merrett et al. Our purpose is to investigate formation of the substructures of M31 using PNe as a tracer of chemical abundances. The [O III] 4363 auroral line is detected in the spectra of two objects, enabling temperature determinations. Ionic abundances are derived from the observed collisionally excited lines, and elemental abundances of nitrogen, oxygen, and neon as well as sulphur and argon are estimated. Correlations between oxygen and the alpha-element abundance ratios are studied, using our sample and the M31 disk and bulge PNe from the literature. In one of the three PNe, we observed relatively higher oxygen abundance compared to the disk sample in M31 at similar galactocentric distances. The results of at least one of the three Northern Spur PNe might be in line with the proposed possible origin of the Northern Spur substructure of M31, i.e. the Northern Spur is connected to the Southern Stream and both substructures comprise the tidal debris of the satellite galaxies of M31.Comment: 5 tables, 17 figures; accepted for publication in Ap

    Testing mechanisms of compensatory fitness of dioecy in a cosexual world

    Questions: All else being equal, populations of dioecious species with a 50:50 sex ratio have only half the effective reproductive population size of bisexual species of equal abundance. Consequently, there is a need to explain how dioecious and bisexual species coexist. Increased mean individual seed mass, fecundity, and population density have all been proposed as attributes of unisexual individuals or populations that may contribute to the persistence or resilience of dioecious species. To date, no studies have compared sympatric dioecious and cosexual species with respect to all three components of fitness. In this study, we sought evidence for these compensatory advantages (higher seed mass, greater seed production per unit basal area, and higher population density) in dioecious species. Location: Five 20–25 ha forest dynamic plots spanning a latitudinal gradient in China, including two temperate, two subtropical, and one tropical forest. Methods: We used a phylogenetically corrected generalized linear modelling approach to assess the phylogenetic dependence and joint evolution of sexual system, seed mass and production, and ecological abundances among 48–333 species and 32,568–136,237 individuals per forest. Results: Across all five forests, we detected no consistent advantage for dioecious relative to sympatric cosexual species with respect to mean individual seed mass, seed production or the density of stems in any size class. Conclusions: Our study suggests that seed traits may provide compensatory mechanisms in some forests, but most often the coexistence of sexual systems cannot be explained by advantages of dioecy related to seed quality and demographic parameters. Future investigations of the factors that promote coexistence may increase our understanding by expanding the search to include attributes such as lifespan and tolerance or resistance to herbivores

    Numerical Study on Indoor Wideband Channel Characteristics with Different Internal Wall

    Effects of material and configuration of the internal wall on the performance of wideband channel are investigated by using the Finite Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method. The indoor wideband channel characteristics, such as the path-loss, Root-Mean-Square (RMS) delay spread and number of the multipath components (MPCs), are presented. The simulated results demonstrate that the path-loss and MPCs are affected by the permittivity, dielectric loss tangent and thickness of the internal wall, while the RMS delay spread is almost not relevant with the dielectric permittivity. Furthermore, the comparison of simulated result with the measured one in a simple scenario has validated the simulation study

    Dust-to-gas ratio, XCOX_{\rm CO} factor and CO-dark gas in the Galactic anticentre: an observational study

    We investigate the correlation between extinction and H~{\sc i} and CO emission at intermediate and high Galactic latitudes (|b|>10\degr) within the footprint of the Xuyi Schmidt Telescope Photometric Survey of the Galactic anticentre (XSTPS-GAC) on small and large scales. In Paper I (Chen et al. 2014), we present a three-dimensional dust extinction map within the footprint of XSTPS-GAC, covering a sky area of over 6,000\,deg2^2 at a spatial angular resolution of 6\,arcmin. In the current work, the map is combined with data from gas tracers, including H~{\sc i} data from the Galactic Arecibo L-band Feed Array H~{\sc i} survey and CO data from the Planck mission, to constrain the values of dust-to-gas ratio DGR=AV/N(H)DGR=A_V/N({\rm H}) and CO-to-H2\rm H_2 conversion factor XCO=N(H2)/WCOX_{\rm CO}=N({\rm H_2})/W_{\rm CO} for the entire GAC footprint excluding the Galactic plane, as well as for selected star-forming regions (such as the Orion, Taurus and Perseus clouds) and a region of diffuse gas in the northern Galactic hemisphere. For the whole GAC footprint, we find DGR=(4.15±0.01)×1022DGR=(4.15\pm0.01) \times 10^{-22}\,magcm2\rm mag\,cm^{2} and XCO=(1.72±0.03)×1020X_{\rm CO}=(1.72 \pm 0.03) \times 10^{20}\,cm2(Kkms1)1\rm cm^{-2}\,(K\,km\,s^{-1})^{-1}. We have also investigated the distribution of "CO-dark" gas (DG) within the footprint of GAC and found a linear correlation between the DG column density and the VV-band extinction: N(DG)2.2×1021(AVAVc)cm2N({\rm DG}) \simeq 2.2 \times 10^{21} (A_V - A^{c}_{V})\,\rm cm^{-2}. The mass fraction of DG is found to be fDG0.55f_{\rm DG}\sim 0.55 toward the Galactic anticentre, which is respectively about 23 and 124 per cent of the atomic and CO-traced molecular gas in the same region. This result is consistent with the theoretical work of Papadopoulos et al. but much larger than that expected in the H2\rm H_2 cloud models by Wolfire et al.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
