The Chern-Simons Coefficient in Supersymmetric Non-abelian Chern-Simons Higgs Theories
By taking into account the effect of the would be Chern-Simons term, we
calculate the quantum correction to the Chern-Simons coefficient in
supersymmetric Chern-Simons Higgs theories with matter fields in the
fundamental representation of SU(n). Because of supersymmetry, the corrections
in the symmetric and Higgs phases are identical. In particular, the correction
is vanishing for N=3 supersymmetric Chern-Simons Higgs theories. The result
should be quite general, and have important implication for the more
interesting case when the Higgs is in the adjoint representation.Comment: more references and explanation about rgularization dpendence are

Electronic structure and magnetic properties of epitaxial FeRh(001) ultra-thin films on W(100)
Epitaxial FeRh(100) films (CsCl structure, thick), prepared
{\it in-situ} on a W(100) single crystal substrate, have been investigated via
valence band and core level photoemission. The presence of the
temperature-induced, first-order, antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic
(AF FM) transition in these films has been verified via linear
dichroism in photoemission from the Fe 3 levels. Core level spectra indicate
a large moment on the Fe atom, practically unchanged in the FM and AF phases.
Judging from the valence band spectra, the metamagnetic transition takes place
without substantial modification of the electronic structure. In the FM phase,
the spin-resolved spectra compare satisfactorily to the calculated
spin-polarized bulk band structure.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
Inflationary Universe in Higher Derivative Induced Gravity
In an induced-gravity model, the stability condition of an inflationary
slow-rollover solution is shown to be . The presence of higher derivative terms
will, however, act against the stability of this expanding solution unless
further constraints on the field parameters are imposed. We find that these
models will acquire a non-vanishing cosmological constant at the end of
inflation. Some models are analyzed for their implication to the early
universe.Comment: 6 pages, two typos correcte
Partial Wave Analysis of Scattering with Nonlocal Aharonov-Bohm Effect and Anomalous Cross Section induced by Quantum Interference
Partial wave theory of a three dmensional scattering problem for an arbitray
short range potential and a nonlocal Aharonov-Bohm magnetic flux is
established. The scattering process of a ``hard shere'' like potential and the
magnetic flux is examined. An anomalous total cross section is revealed at the
specific quantized magnetic flux at low energy which helps explain the
composite fermion and boson model in the fractional quantum Hall effect. Since
the nonlocal quantum interference of magnetic flux on the charged particles is
universal, the nonlocal effect is expected to appear in quite general potential
system and will be useful in understanding some other phenomena in mesoscopic
phyiscs.Comment: 6 figure
Kaluza-Klein Induced Gravity Inflation
A D-dimensional induced gravity theory is studied carefully in a
dimensional Friedmann-Robertson-Walker space-time. We try to extract
information of the symmetry breaking potential in search of an inflationary
solution with non-expanding internal-space. We find that the induced gravity
model imposes strong constraints on the form of symmetry breaking potential in
order to generate an acceptable inflationary universe. These constraints are
analyzed carefully in this paper.Comment: 10 pages, title changed, corrected some typos, two additional

Lifespan-increasing drug nordihydroguaiaretic acid inhibits p300 and activates autophagy.
Aging is characterized by the progressive loss of physiological function in all organisms. Remarkably, the aging process can be modulated by environmental modifications, including diet and small molecules. The natural compound nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA) robustly increases lifespan in flies and mice, but its mechanism of action remains unclear. Here, we report that NDGA is an inhibitor of the epigenetic regulator p300. We find that NDGA inhibits p300 acetyltransferase activity in vitro and suppresses acetylation of a key p300 target in histones (i.e., H3K27) in cells. We use the cellular thermal shift assay to uniquely demonstrate NDGA binding to p300 in cells. Finally, in agreement with recent findings indicating that p300 is a potent blocker of autophagy, we show that NDGA treatment induces autophagy. These findings identify p300 as a target of NDGA and provide mechanistic insight into its role in longevity
Towards A Holographic Model of D-Wave Superconductors
The holographic model for S-wave high T_c superconductors developed by
Hartnoll, Herzog and Horowitz is generalized to describe D-wave
superconductors. The 3+1 dimensional gravitational theory consists a symmetric,
traceless second-rank tensor field and a U(1) gauge field in the background of
the AdS black hole. Below T_c the tensor field which carries the U(1) charge
undergoes the Higgs mechanism and breaks the U(1) symmetry of the boundary
theory spontaneously. The phase transition characterized by the D-wave
condensate is second order with the mean field critical exponent beta = 1/2. As
expected, the AC conductivity is isotropic below T_c and the system becomes
superconducting in the DC limit but has no hard gap.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures, Some typos corrected, Matched with the published

Stochastic stabilization of cosmological photons
The stability of photon trajectories in models of the Universe that have
constant spatial curvature is determined by the sign of the curvature: they are
exponentially unstable if the curvature is negative and stable if it is
positive or zero. We demonstrate that random fluctuations in the curvature
provide an additional stabilizing mechanism. This mechanism is analogous to the
one responsible for stabilizing the stochastic Kapitsa pendulum. When the mean
curvature is negative it is capable of stabilizing the photon trajectories;
when the mean curvature is zero or positive it determines the characteristic
frequency with which neighbouring trajectories oscillate about each other. In
constant negative curvature models of the Universe that have compact topology,
exponential instability implies chaos (e.g. mixing) in the photon dynamics. We
discuss some consequences of stochastic stabilization in this context.Comment: 4 pages, 3 postscript figures in color which are also appropriate for

On 32-GHz cryogenically cooled HEMT low-noise amplifiers
The cryogenic noise temperature performance of a two-stage and a three-stage 32 GHz High Electron Mobility Transistor (HEMT) amplifier was evaluated. The amplifiers employ 0.25 micrometer conventional AlGaAs/GaAs HEMT devices, hybrid matching input and output microstrip circuits, and a cryogenically stable dc biasing network. The noise temperature measurements were performed in the frequency range of 31 to 33 GHz over a physical temperature range of 300 K down to 12 K. Across the measurement band, the amplifiers displayed a broadband response, and the noise temperature was observed to decrease by a factor of 10 in cooling from 300 K to 15 K. The lowest noise temperature measured for the two-stage amplifier at 32 GHz was 35 K with an associated gain of 16.5 dB, while the three-stage amplifier measured 39 K with an associated gain of 26 dB. It was further observed that both amplifiers were insensitive to light
Bianchi type I space and the stability of inflationary Friedmann-Robertson-Walker space
Stability analysis of the Bianchi type I universe in pure gravity theory is
studied in details. We first derive the non-redundant field equation of the
system by introducing the generalized Bianchi type I metric. This non-redundant
equation reduces to the Friedmann equation in the isotropic limit. It is shown
further that any unstable mode of the isotropic perturbation with respect to a
de Sitter background is also unstable with respect to anisotropic
perturbations. Implications to the choice of physical theories are discussed in
details in this paper.Comment: 5 pages, some comment adde
