The unfamiliar face effect on forensic craniofacial reconstruction and recognition.
Previous research into the reliability of forensic craniofacial reconstruction (CFR) has focused primarily on the accuracy of reconstructed faces from European or African ancestry skulls. Moreover, the recognition of CFR in relation to the experience and ancestry of the practitioners and the assessors has not been previously considered. The cross-race effect is a recognised phenomenon in psychology studies, where familiar ancestry faces are recognised more readily than unfamiliar ancestry faces, but there is a paucity of research addressing the relationship between the accuracy of reconstructed faces and the familiarity with this ancestry by the practitioners/assessors. The aims of this research were to investigate whether 'unfamiliar-race effect' has any influence on the accuracy of CFR and to evaluate how much the correct recognition rate of CFR is affected by the cross-race effect. Eight CFRs from three ancestry groups were produced by experienced practitioners in order to explore the aims. The results demonstrated that practitioners produced more recognisable CFRs using skulls from a familiar ancestry than skulls from unfamiliar ancestries
A possible method for non-Hermitian and non--symmetric Hamiltonian systems
A possible method to investigate non-Hermitian Hamiltonians is suggested
through finding a Hermitian operator and defining the annihilation and
creation operators to be -pseudo-Hermitian adjoint to each other. The
operator represents the -pseudo-Hermiticity of Hamiltonians.
As an example, a non-Hermitian and non--symmetric Hamiltonian with
imaginary linear coordinate and linear momentum terms is constructed and
analyzed in detail. The operator is found, based on which, a real
spectrum and a positive-definite inner product, together with the probability
explanation of wave functions, the orthogonality of eigenstates, and the
unitarity of time evolution, are obtained for the non-Hermitian and
non--symmetric Hamiltonian. Moreover, this Hamiltonian turns out to be
coupled when it is extended to the canonical noncommutative space with
noncommutative spatial coordinate operators and noncommutative momentum
operators as well. Our method is applicable to the coupled Hamiltonian. Then
the first and second order noncommutative corrections of energy levels are
calculated, and in particular the reality of energy spectra, the
positive-definiteness of inner products, and the related properties (the
probability explanation of wave functions, the orthogonality of eigenstates,
and the unitarity of time evolution) are found not to be altered by the

Serum levels of matrix metalloproteinases-2 and-9 and their tissue inhibitors in inflammatory neuromuscular disorders
We monitored serum levels of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their tissue inhibitors (TIMPs) before and during intravenously applied immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy in 33 patients with chronic immune-mediated neuropathies and myopathies and 15 controls. Baseline MMP-2 and TIMP-2 serum levels were lower and MMP-9 and TIMP-1 serum levels higher in all patients compared to age-matched controls. Eight days after IVIG treatment, MMP-2, TIMP-2, and TIMP-1 serum levels increased, while MMP-9 serum levels decreased, indicating tissue repair. After 60 days, MMP-9 levels increased, MMP-2 approached normal levels, while TIMP-1 and TIMP-2 serum levels were below day 8 levels, indicating relapsing tissue damage. Comparing the MMP/TIMP results with the clinical courses, IVIG treatment tended to change MMP/TIMP levels in a way that paralleled clinical improvement and relapse. The cytotoxic effects of lipidic formulated gold porphyrin nanoparticles for the treatment of neuroblastoma
Objective: Nanotechnology has been identified as a promising platform in the improvement of the design and development of drug delivery systems. In the present study we investigated the potential of lipidic nanoparticles consisting of gold porphyrin for the treatment of neuroblastoma. Materials and methods: To characterize the size of the lipidic gold porphyrin nanoparticles, we used transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The in vitro cytotoxic effect on neuroblastoma activity was examined using XTT cell proliferation assay, then IC50 values were calculated. In vivo safety and toxicity were studied using intraperitoneal injection of gold porphyrin nanoparticles into normal animals. Finally, tumor size measurement and animal survival were studied to investigate the therapeutic effect of lipidic gold porphyrin nanoparticles on neuroblastoma growth. Results: We found that incorporation of gold porphyrin into lipidic nanoparticles resulted in a 16-fold increase in size. Subsequent in vitro and in vivo cytotoxicity studies further showed that the lipidic gold porphyrin nanoparticles could decrease systemic toxicity, as well as inhibiting tumor growth following administration into the neuroblastoma bearing mice. Conclusion: The delivery of lipidic gold porphyrin nanoparticles by incorporation with lipidic formulation is feasible approach to treat neuroblastoma. An analytic approximation to the Diffusion Coefficient for the periodic Lorentz Gas
An approximate stochastic model for the topological dynamics of the periodic
triangular Lorentz gas is constructed. The model, together with an extremum
principle, is used to find a closed form approximation to the diffusion
coefficient as a function of the lattice spacing. This approximation is
superior to the popular Machta and Zwanzig result and agrees well with a range

Which quality of life score is best for glaucoma patients and why?
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The glaucomas are generally asymptomatic diseases until they are very advanced. They affect 2% of the population over 40 years of age and therefore represent a significant public health issue. There have been a number of attempts to develop quality of life scales for the disease. This review discusses the pros and cons of these scales and suggests the best of the current ones for use in a clinical setting.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Medline, Embase and Google Scholar were searched for relevant articles. No time period was defined and all types of article were included.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>11 Quality of Life scores were identified that have been used with glaucoma patients.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>There is no generally accepted 'best' Quality of Life instrument for use in glaucoma. Many of the scales are biased towards physical symptoms and do little to address the personal or social factors of the disease. Further work is needed to produce scales that address all these areas as well as being simple to administer in a clinical setting.</p
Extended RDF: Computability and Complexity Issues
ERDF stable model semantics is a recently proposed semantics for
ERDF ontologies and a faithful extension of RDFS semantics on RDF graphs.
In this paper, we elaborate on the computability and complexity issues of the
ERDF stable model semantics. Based on the undecidability result of ERDF
stable model semantics, decidability under this semantics cannot be achieved,
unless ERDF ontologies of restricted syntax are considered. Therefore, we
propose a slightly modified semantics for ERDF ontologies, called ERDF #n-
stable model semantics. We show that entailment under this semantics is, in
general, decidable and also extends RDFS entailment. Equivalence statements
between the two semantics are provided. Additionally, we provide algorithms
that compute the ERDF #n-stable models of syntax-restricted and general
ERDF ontologies. Further, we provide complexity results for the ERDF #nstable
model semantics on syntax-restricted and general ERDF ontologies.

Antikaon production in nucleon-nucleon reactions near threshold
The antikaon production cross section from nucleon-nucleon reactions near
threshold is studied in a meson exchange model. We include both pion and kaon
exchange, but neglect the interference between the amplitudes. In case of pion
exchange the antikaon production cross section can be expressed in terms of the
antikaon production cross section from a pion-nucleon interaction, which we
take from the experimental data if available. Otherwise, a -resonance
exchange model is introduced to relate the different reaction cross sections.
In case of kaon exchange the antikaon production cross section is related to
the elastic and cross sections, which are again taken from
experimental measurements. We find that the one-meson exchange model gives a
satisfactory fit to the available data for the cross section
at high energies. We compare our predictions for the cross section near
threshold with an earlier empirical parameterization and that from phase space
