Stationary solution of the ring-spinning balloon in zero air drag using a RBFN based mesh-free method
A technique for numerical analysis of the dynamics of the ring-spinning balloon based on the Radial Basis Function Networks (RBFNs) is presented in this paper. This method uses a 'universal approximator' based on neural network methodology to solve the differential governing equations which are derived from the conditions of the dynamic equilibrium of the yarn to determine the shape of balloon yarn. The method needs only a coarse finite collocation points without any finite element-type discretisation of the domain and its boundary for numerical solution of the governing differential equations. This paper will report a first assessment of the validity and efficiency of the present mesh-less method in predicting the balloon shape across a wide range of spinning conditions
Thermal reaction of Al/Ti bilayers with contaminated interface
We have studied some new aspects of thermal reactions in Al/Ti bilayers in which the interface is purposely contaminated with oxygen. After annealing at a temperature of 460 °C, an Al_3Ti compound forms at the interface, moreover some Al diffuses through the Ti to form a compound at the free surface. The amount of aluminum at the free surface can be as large as at the interface. Nucleation and lateral growth of Al_3Ti at the interface are locally unfavorable. This results in a competition between the lateral growth of Al_3Ti at the Al/Ti interface and the diffusion of Al to the free surface. Once full coverage by Al_3Ti is obtained at the Al/Ti interface, the diffusion of Al to the surface becomes negligible
Use Cases for Abnormal Behaviour Detection in Smart Homes
While people have many ideas about how a smart home should react to particular behaviours from their inhabitant, there seems to have been relatively little attempt to organise this systematically. In this paper, we attempt to rectify this in consideration of context awareness and novelty detection for a smart home that monitors its inhabitant for illness and unexpected behaviour. We do this through the concept of the Use Case, which is used in software engineering to specify the behaviour of a system. We describe a set of scenarios and the possible outputs that the smart home could give and introduce the SHMUC Repository of Smart Home Use Cases. Based on this, we can consider how probabilistic and logic-based reasoning systems would produce different capabilities
Submicrometric Films of Surface-Attached Polymer Network with Temperature-Responsive Properties
Temperature-responsive properties of surface-attached
poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) network films with well-controlled
chemistry are investigated. The synthesis consists of cross-linking and
grafting preformed ene-reactive polymer chains through thiol--ene click
chemistry. The formation of surface-attached and cross-linked polymer films has
the advantage of being wellcontrolled without any caution of no-oxygen
atmosphere or addition of initiators. PNIPAM hydrogel films with same
cross-link density are synthesized on a wide range of thickness, from
nanometers to micrometers. The swelling-collapse transition with temperature is
studied by using ellipsometry, neutron reflectivity, and atomic force
microscopy as complementary surface-probing techniques. Sharp and high
amplitude temperature-induced phase transition is observed for all
submicrometric PNIPAM hydrogel films. For temperature above LCST,
surface-attached PNIPAM hydrogels collapse similarly but without complete
expulsion of water. For temperature below LCST, the swelling of PNIPAM
hydrogels depends on the film thickness. It is shown that the swelling is
strongly affected by the surface attachment for ultrathin films below 150
nm. For thicker films above 150 nm (to micrometers), surface-attached polymer
networks with the same cross-link density swell equally. The density profile of
the hydrogel films in the direction normal to the substrate is confronted with
in-plane topography of the free surface. It results that the free interface
width is much larger than the roughness of the hydrogel film, suggesting

Involutivity of integrals for sine-Gordon, modified KdV and potential KdV maps
Closed form expressions in terms of multi-sums of products have been given in
\cite{Tranclosedform, KRQ} of integrals of sine-Gordon, modified Korteweg-de
Vries and potential Korteweg-de Vries maps obtained as so-called
-traveling wave reductions of the corresponding partial difference
equations. We prove the involutivity of these integrals with respect to
recently found symplectic structures for those maps. The proof is based on
