Methodology for Value-Driven Enterprise Architecture Development Goals: Application to DoDAF Framework
The Department of Defense Architectural Framework (DoDAF) describes 29 distinct views but offers limited guidance on view selection to meet system needs. This research extends the Value-Driven Enterprise Architecture Score (VDEA-Score) from a descriptive, evaluation protocol toward a prescriptive one by evaluating each DoDAF view and its contribution to the overall objective of the completed architecture. This extension of VDEA is referred to as VDEA-Development Goals (VDEA-DG). The program manager or other decision-makers may use this insight to justify the allocation of resources to the development of specific architecture views considered to provide maximum value. This research provides insight into the Joint Capabilities Integration and Development System (JCIDS) process and policy requirements. Existing guidance of a static list of views prior to DoD milestone approval detracts from the creation of vital architecture for system success. This research shows overlap between the most important views for the considered architecture project and the JCIDS requirements and identifies areas for JCIDS policy improvement. This research also identifies areas where DoDAF does not directly support the creation of capabilities. With additional information on the resources required for creating individual views, the tool could be expanded to identify an optimal build sequence given resource constraints
Asymptotics of relative heat traces and determinants on open surfaces of finite area
The goal of this paper is to prove that on surfaces with asymptotically cusp
ends the relative determinant of pairs of Laplace operators is well defined. We
consider a surface with cusps (M,g) and a metric h on the surface that is a
conformal transformation of the initial metric g. We prove the existence of the
relative determinant of the pair under suitable
conditions on the conformal factor. The core of the paper is the proof of the
existence of an asymptotic expansion of the relative heat trace for small
times. We find the decay of the conformal factor at infinity for which this
asymptotic expansion exists and the relative determinant is defined. Following
the paper by B. Osgood, R. Phillips and P. Sarnak about extremal of
determinants on compact surfaces, we prove Polyakov's formula for the relative
determinant and discuss the extremal problem inside a conformal class. We

Exploring a rheonomic system
A simple and illustrative rheonomic system is explored in the Lagrangian
formalism. The difference between Jacobi's integral and energy is highlighted.
A sharp contrast with remarks found in the literature is pointed out. The
non-conservative system possess a Lagrangian not explicitly dependent on time
and consequently there is a Jacobi's integral. The Lagrange undetermined
multiplier method is used as a complement to obtain a few interesting
conclusion

TB26: Native Bees Associated with the Low-Bush Blueberry in Maine and Eastern Canada
Native bees are particularly important pollinators of lowbush blueberry. Changes in certain cultural practices since the 1930s, however, have caused substantial reductions in the native bee populations. Recent observations, however, have shown that adjustments in these practices can have a beneficial effect on native bees with accompanying increases in their numbers. Collections of native Apoidea were made in various areas of Maine and eastern Canada from 1961 through 1965 to determine the species present and their relative abundance in blueberry fields. Of the 89 species collected, 59 were taken on lowbush blueberry blossoms, and 10 in close association with lowbush blueberry. Species in the families Halictidae and Andrenidae were by far the most numerous (32 and 23 species), followed in decreasing occurrence by species in the families Bombidae, Anthophoridae, Colletidae, and Xylocopidae.https://digitalcommons.library.umaine.edu/aes_techbulletin/1165/thumbnail.jp
Achieving sub-diffraction imaging through bound surface states in negative-refracting photonic crystals at the near-infrared
We report the observation of imaging beyond the diffraction limit due to
bound surface states in negative refraction photonic crystals. We achieve an
effective negative index figure-of-merit [-Re(n)/Im(n)] of at least 380, ~125x
improvement over recent efforts in the near-infrared, with a 0.4 THz bandwidth.
Supported by numerical and theoretical analyses, the observed near-field
resolution is 0.47 lambda, clearly smaller than the diffraction limit of 0.61
lambda. Importantly, we show this sub-diffraction imaging is due to the
resonant excitation of surface slab modes, allowing refocusing of
non-propagating evanescent waves
Interactions of Carboxylated Nanodiamonds With Mouse Macrophages Cell Line and Primary Cells
Nanodiamonds (ND) have attracted significant interest for their use in several biomedical applications. These applications can be very useful if the safety and compatibility of ND are proven. We assessed the effects of ND (100 nm, Carboxylated) on primary macrophages and a macrophage-like cell line and found that these particles are not toxic to these cells at lower concentrations but may interfere with cell functions and differentiation. Internalization of ND by these cells in a time- and dose-dependent manner was mostly via phagocytosis and clathrin-dependent endocytosis and localized to the cytoplasm but not into the nucleus. No significant induction of inflammatory cytokines or reduction in the ability of these cells to respond to lipopolysaccharides (LPS) was noted. However, the endocytic activity of these cells is significantly reduced. In addition, ND exposure reduced the ability of differentiating bone marrow cells to express macrophage surface markers. Measurement of the fluorescence and absorbance of ND-treated cells clearly showed the ability of these particles to produce a signal at different wavelengths. Therefore, it is important to consider interference of ND in different colorimetric and fluorometric assays when testing interactions or effects of ND on cells. Our findings suggest that ND are not cytotoxic to macrophages at the tested concentrations, but it can interfere with macrophage functions and differentiation and may interfere with assays’ result through the production of a signal at different wavelengths
