    Individual-level rewards and appraisal: the influence of context

    Individual performance rewards and individual performance appraisals are key elements of “calculative HRM.” As practices, they figure strongly in the most highly cited studies within strategic HRM research. However, these studies are generally located within a single, distinct context, the USA, a context in which there is an underlying assumption of firm latitude. Varieties of capitalism literature indicates that this assumption is inappropriate to the context of coordinated market economies of Europe. We review cross-national studies of the adoption of calculative HRM and observe a substantial influence of national context on its adoption by firms. In terms of how to conceive national context, we observe that recent research suggests that formal institutional influences are of more salience than informal influences. The relative importance of formal institutional influences has consequences for international management education that predominantly views context through a cultural lens. We further observe that recent research of the uptake of calculative HRM perceives context as a constraint rather than as a determinant. Regardless of context, managers have at least some latitude to implement calculative HRM practices. However, we suggest that their efforts need to be adapted to and sensitive to contextual constraints

In this article, we outline the need for HRM to take full account of context, particularly national context, and to use both cultural theories and, particularly, institutional theories to do that. We use research publications that utilize the Cranet data to show how that can be done. From that evidence, we develop a series of proposals for further context-based research in HRM

    A framework for comparative institutional research on HRM

    This article argues that awareness of institutional context has been singularly lacking in the most influential areas of HRM. This lack of attention to external context has resulted in findings that fail to reflect reality. We offer a layered contextual framework embedded in economic institutional theory. We propose that it forms the basis of a comparative research agenda for HRM. We validate the framework using extant publications on institutionally based comparative HRM, drawing on findings from the Cranet research network published in the decade 2007–2017

    Crossing the streams: HRM in multinational enterprises and comparative HRM

    This paper examines the differences between the stream of international HRM that focuses on comparative HRM and the one that focuses on HRM in multinational enterprises (MNEs). More specifically, we review how the aspects of time, process and context have been treated within the two streams and argue that the streams have largely developed in isolation as opposed to informing one another.     Poxviral/Retroviral Chimeric Vectors Allow Cytoplasmic Production of Transducing Defective Retroviral Particles

    AbstractDefective vaccinia viruses were constructed that express functional Moloney murine leukemia virus-based vector genomes, giving rise to substantial titers of transduction-competent retrovirus particles after infection of a retroviral packaging cell line. For this purpose, the proviral retrovirus genome, engineered into the vaccinia virus mutant, was subjected to several modifications, including the replacement of retroviral promoter sequences by vaccinia virus sequences and the precise fusion of the transcription stop signal downstream of and the removal of such signals within the transcription unit, allowing cytoplasmic transcription of distinct full-length retroviral transcripts. Vaccinia-mediated expression of retroviral vector particles could be observed as early as 3 h postinfection and resulted in stable transduction of NIH/3T3 target cells at higher titers than the control performed by conventional plasmid transfections. Thus at least part of the vaccinia life cycle and retroviral assembly can occur concomitantly. Due to the favorable properties of vaccinia vectors, including high coding capacity, stability, and wide host range, defective vaccinia viral/retroviral chimeric vectors are promising tools for gene therapy applications

    Novel Approaches towards Highly Selective Self-Powered Gas Sensors

    The prevailing design approaches of semiconductor gas sensors struggle to overcome most of their current limitations such as poor selectivity, and high power consumption. Herein, a new sensing concept based on devices that are capable of detecting gases without the need of any external power sources required to activate interaction of gases with sensor or to generate the sensor read out signal. Based on the integration of complementary functionalities (namely; powering and sensing) in a singular nanostructure, self-sustained gas sensors will be demonstrated. Moreover, a rational methodology to design organic surface functionalization that provide high selectivity towards single gas species will also be discussed. Specifically, theoretical results, confirmed experimentally, indicate that precisely tuning of the sterical and electronic structure of sensor material/organic interfaces can lead to unprecedented selectivity values, comparable to those typical of bioselective processes.     World caf\ue9 method to engage smart energy-district project partners in assessing urban co-benefits

    Urban energy-district projects introduce outstanding technological innovation in buildings and energy systems increasing sustainability in city neighborhoods. Such projects generate additional co-benefits for the city beyond changes in physical elements and development of social and institutional relationships (e.g. local employment, environmental quality, public health, property values, innovation attitude, etc.). Since exceeding main declared goals or not always clearly foreseen in the early project phase, these co-benefits are often not properly understood and considered. However, only their explicit recognition will make possible their inclusion in the assessment of the whole project\u2019s performance. From these considerations, this study faces the issue of engaging project partners in assessing co-benefits in order to consider a broad spectrum of relevant, positive effects in the evaluation process. Group knowledge and group thinking of this complex topic are investigated through the world caf\ue9 method, providing an atmosphere of trust and open discussions among participants. This empirical work lays the foundations to go beyond the mere economic measure as the sole criterion for assessing project effects, also including changes in end-user behavior and intangible asset

    Suitability of Different PCR-DGGE Primer Sets for the Monitoring of Lactic Acid Bacteria in Wine

    Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) play a dual role in winemaking as they are the main effectors of malolactic fermentation, but some members can also cause wine spoilage. PCR-DGGE has proved to be a quick tool to study the LAB community and their fluctuation in wine. For detecting wine-associated LAB by PCR-DGGE, the primer sets WLAB1/WLAB2GC, WBAC1/WBAC2GC, Lac1/Lac1o/Lac2GC, 341fGC/518r and rpoB1/rpoB1o/rpoB2GC were tested and evaluated in this study. The primer systems were assessed by the separation of LAB reference strains on DGGE gels and by attributing the resulting amplicons to defined species. Subsequently, the detection of LAB in wine samples and enrichments thereof was compared. While the primer systems WBAC1/WBAC2GC and 341fGC/518r were not appropriate, the Lac1/Lac1o/Lac2GC primer set performed well. However, multiple bands complicated the evaluation. The rpoB1/rpoB1o/rpoB2GC set seemed to be promising for the detection of LAB in wine, although further improvements in terms of the detection limit need to be done. Due to the pronounced sensitivity and the sufficient discrimination of LAB at species level, the WLAB1/WLAB2GC primer system was found to be most suitable for studying the occurrence of LAB in wine

    Suicide is increasingly described by governments and policy-makers as a global public health problem. Between 1950 and 1995 global suicide rates have increased by 60%.
