    Interplay of Aharonov-Bohm and Berry phases in gate-defined graphene quantum dots

    We study the influence of a magnetic flux tube on the possibility to electrostatically confine electrons in a graphene quantum dot. Without magnetic flux tube, the graphene pseudospin is responsible for a quantization of the total angular momentum to half-integer values. On the other hand, with a flux tube containing half a flux quantum, the Aharonov-Bohm phase and Berry phase precisely cancel, and we find a state at zero angular momentum that cannot be confined electrostatically. In this case, true bound states only exist in regular geometries for which states without zero-angular-momentum component exist, while non-integrable geometries lack confinement. We support these arguments with a calculation of the two-terminal conductance of a gate-defined graphene quantum dot, which shows resonances for a disc-shaped geometry and for a stadium-shaped geometry without flux tube, but no resonances for a stadium-shaped quantum dot with a π\pi-flux tube.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure

    Improving water use efficiency under worsening scarcity: Evidence from the Middle Olifants sub-basin in South Africa

    With the political changes in South Africa in the early 1990s, the South African government introduced a reform process in the entire water sector with the goal of a more enhanced and equitable water management system. This paper analyzes existing water allocation situations and applies a nonlinear optimization model to investigate the optimal intra- and inter-regional allocations in the Middle Olifants sub-basin of South Africa. Results show higher benefit from inter-regional water allocation. Reducing water supply levels to conform to the sustainable water supply policy, it can be shown that although water supply is reduced by approximately 50%, total benefits from water are only reduced by 5% and 11% for inter- and intra-regional allocation regimes respectively. These results indicate that alternative water allocation mechanisms can serve as instruments to offset for the effects of water scarcity.Water allocation, IWRM, Olifants basin, South Africa, Africa, Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,

    Geochemistry of volcanic rocks from the Woodlark Basin

    EGU2011-12864 The Woodlark Basin east of Papua New Guinea represents one of the few places on Earth where a spreading axis propagates into continental crust. This special tectonic setting allows insights into the evolution of magma composition as continental extension and break-up changes to the formation of ocean crust. We report here geochemical results on samples collected in 2009 from the four segments closest to the continental breakup, from segment 1 which abuts the detachment fault responsible for continental extension on Moresby Seamount in the West, to segment 4, representing mature oceanic crust in the East. A total of 208 glass samples have been analyzed for their major (EMPA) and trace element (LA-ICPMS) compositions. The data show strong E-W variations. Samples ranging from tholeiitic basalt and basaltic andesite to andesite and rhyolite are found on Segment 1. They have generally high alkali values and a wide range of trace element contents and ratios. Segments 2 to 4 magmas in contrast only comprise tholeiitic basalt with lower alkali contents and a more restricted range of trace element chemistry. The geochemical differences between the segments cannot be attributed to differentiation processes alone, and different sources are required. High Ba/La, (La/Sm)N, Rb/Sr, and Th/La on Segment 1 suggest a derivation from an enriched mantle source, while low Nd/Pb and Nb/U suggest that some of the enrichment may also reflect the influence of continental crust during magma genesis. Whether this continental signature is present in the form of recycled material in the mantle or as rafted continental blocks in the axial region is at present unclear. In contrast to rocks from segment 1, trace element compositions of volcanic glasses from segments 2 to 4 show a stronger MORB signature, presumably reflecting more mature spreading in this part of the basin. The influence of continental material appears to be minimal, suggesting that uncontaminated asthenosphere quickly flows into the rift and/or that continental blocks are not retained in the axial region for long time periods following the rifting-spreading transition

    A model for the Delta(1600) resonance and gamma N -> Delta(1600) transition

    A covariant spectator constituent quark model is applied to study the gamma N -> Delta(1600) transition. Two processes are important in the transition: a photon couples to the individual quarks of the Delta(1600) core (quark core), and a photon couples to the intermediate pion-baryon states (pion cloud). While the quark core contributions are estimated assuming Delta(1600) as the first radial excitation of Delta(1232), the pion cloud contributions are estimated based on an analogy with the gamma N -> Delta(1232) transition. To estimate the pion cloud contributions in the gamma N -> Delta(1600) transition, we include the relevant intermediate states, pi-N, pi-Delta, pi-N(1440) and pi-Delta(1600). Dependence on the four-momentum transfer squared, Q2, is predicted for the magnetic dipole transition form factor, GM*(Q2), as well as the helicity amplitudes, A_1/2(Q2) and A_3/2(Q2).     FUTURES MARKET DEPTH: REVEALED VS. PERCEIVED PRICE ORDER IMBALANCES

    In this paper we study futures market depth by examining the price path due to order imbalances thereby allowing us to directly gain insight in the execution costs due to a lack of market depth We propose a two dimensional market depth measure in which the price path due to order imbalances is described by an S-shape function. The proposed market depth measure is applied to transaction specific futures data from Euronext. Subsequently, we examine CBOT traders' perceptions about the price path due to order imbalances and examine the characteristics that are associated with a particular perception. The proposed market depth measure gives guidelines for improving market depth, and can be used to compare competitive futures contracts. It appears that the actual price path due to order imbalances does not match the perceived price path. Traders have various perceptions about the price path due to order imbalances. Dominant perceptions were, S-shape, linear, exponential or zigzag price paths. The differences in traders' perceptions can be traced back to different traders' characteristics among others type of primary futures contract traded, importance of information sources and trading strategy (herd vs. non-herd behavior). The observed disconnect between perceptions and revealed price path due to order imbalances have great implications for market participants who try to minimize execution costs and for the futures exchange management that tries to increase the market depth.Marketing,

    General cost analysis for scholarly communication in Germany : results of the "Houghton Report" for Germany

    Management Summary: Conducted within the project “Economic Implications of New Models for Information Supply for Science and Research in Germany”, the Houghton Report for Germany provides a general cost and benefit analysis for scientific communication in Germany comparing different scenarios according to their specific costs and explicitly including the German National License Program (NLP). Basing on the scholarly lifecycle process model outlined by Björk (2007), the study compared the following scenarios according to their accounted costs: - Traditional subscription publishing, - Open access publishing (Gold Open Access; refers primarily to journal publishing where access is free of charge to readers, while the authors or funding organisations pay for publication) - Open Access self-archiving (authors deposit their work in online open access institutional or subject-based repositories, making it freely available to anyone with Internet access; further divided into (i) CGreen Open Access’ self-archiving operating in parallel with subscription publishing; and (ii) the ‘overlay services’ model in which self-archiving provides the foundation for overlay services (e.g. peer review, branding and quality control services)) - the NLP. Within all scenarios, five core activity elements (Fund research and research communication; perform research and communicate the results; publish scientific and scholarly works; facilitate dissemination, retrieval and preservation; study publications and apply the knowledge) were modeled and priced with all their including activities. Modelling the impacts of an increase in accessibility and efficiency resulting from more open access on returns to R&D over a 20 year period and then comparing costs and benefits, we find that the benefits of open access publishing models are likely to substantially outweigh the costs and, while smaller, the benefits of the German NLP also exceed the costs. This analysis of the potential benefits of more open access to research findings suggests that different publishing models can make a material difference to the benefits realised, as well as the costs faced. It seems likely that more Open Access would have substantial net benefits in the longer term and, while net benefits may be lower during a transitional period, they are likely to be positive for both ‘author-pays’ Open Access publishing and the ‘over-lay journals’ alternatives (‘Gold Open Access’), and for parallel subscription publishing and self-archiving (‘Green Open Access’). The NLP returns substantial benefits and savings at a modest cost, returning one of the highest benefit/cost ratios available from unilateral national policies during a transitional period (second to that of ‘Green Open Access’ self-archiving). Whether ‘Green Open Access’ self-archiving in parallel with subscriptions is a sustainable model over the longer term is debateable, and what impact the NLP may have on the take up of Open Access alternatives is also an important consideration. So too is the potential for developments in Open Access or other scholarly publishing business models to significantly change the relative cost-benefit of the NLP over time. The results are comparable to those of previous studies from the UK and Netherlands. Green Open Access in parallel with the traditional model yields the best benefits/cost ratio. Beside its benefits/cost ratio, the meaningfulness of the NLP is given by its enforceability.
