    Cellular immunity to encephalitogenic peptide in tumour-bearing mice.

    Mice bearing a methylcholanthrene-induced tumour were tested for their cell mediated reactivity to the experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) peptide of human myelin basic protein (MBP) in the leucocyte adherence inhibition (LAI) test. Tested over a range of peptide concentrations, peritoneal cells (PC) from tumour-bearing mice exhibited optimal adherence inhibition at 640 ng/ml; PC from normal and parasite-infected mice were unreactive. The EAE peptide also stimulated PC from tumour-bearing mice in the E-rosette augmentation (ERA) test and in the macrophage migration inhibition (MMI) test. MMI appeared to be the most sensitive assay, in that significant reaction at peptide concentrations well below those giving significant LAI and ERA. LAI reactivity to the peptide was detected 5 days after tumour transplantation, and continued to be detectable even with very large tumours. In vitro assays were confirmed by demonstration of EAE peptide recognition in vivo, in tumour-bearing and tumour-excised mice, using the delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction. The present experiments demonstrate an antigenic determinant in murine tumours, similar to the well-characterized EAE peptide of human MBP, and establish an animal model for study and characterization of common tumour-associated antigens

Mice of two different strains (CBA and Herston white) failed to develop marked resistance to Ehrlich ascites tumour when immunized with iodoacetatetreated tumour cells, a procedure reported by others to be effective in protecting A-jax mice. 2. No circulating anti-tumour antibodies could be detected in the sera of the immunized mice, by a variety of techniques. 3. Delayed-type hypersensitivity to disrupted tumour cells was present in the immunized mice to a highly significant degree; however, this was not correlated with resistance to challenge with live tumour. 4.     The strength of an atom-surface interaction is determined by studying atom diffraction from a rotated material grating. A phasor diagram is developed to interpret why diffraction orders are never completely suppressed when a complex transmission function due to the van der Waals interaction is present. We also show that atom-surface interactions can produce asymmetric diffraction patterns.     Putting pharmaceuticals into the wider context of challenges to fish populations in rivers

    The natural range of fish species in our rivers is related to flow, elevation, temperature, local habitat and connectivity. For over 2000 years, humans have altered to varying degrees the river habitat. In the past 200 years, we added to the environmental disruption by discharging poorly treated sewage, nutrients and industrial waste into our rivers. For many rivers, the low point arrived during the period of 1950s–1970s, when rapid economic development overrode environmental concerns and dissolved oxygen concentrations dropped to zero. In these more enlightened times, gross river pollution is a thing of the past in the Developed World. However, persistent legacy chemical contaminants can be found in fish long after their discharge ceased. Changes in habitat quality and morphology caused and continue to cause the disappearance of fish species. The range of fish stressors has now increased as temperatures rise, and non-native fish introductions bring new diseases. The threat from pharmaceuticals to fish populations remains hypothetical, and no studies have yet linked change in fish populations to exposure

    Sex differences in learned fear expression and extinction involve the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). We recently demonstrated that enhanced learned fear expression during auditory fear extinction and its recall is linked to persistent theta activation in the prelimbic (PL) but not infralimbic (IL) cortex of female rats. Emerging evidence indicates that gamma oscillations in mPFC are also implicated in the expression and extinction of learned fear. Therefore we re-examined our in vivo electrophysiology data and found that females showed persistent PL gamma activation during extinction and a failure of IL gamma activation during extinction recall. Altered prefrontal gamma oscillations thus accompany sex differences in learned fear expression and its extinction. These findings are relevant for understanding the neural basis of post-traumatic stress disorder, which is more prevalent in women and involves impaired extinction and mPFC dysfunction

    Long-Range Excitons in Optical Absorption Spectra of Electroluminescent Polymer Poly(para-phenylenevinylene)

    The component of photoexcited states with large spatial extent is investigated for poly(para-phenylenevinylene) using the intermediate exciton theory. We find a peak due to long-range excitons at the higher-energy side of the lowest main feature of optical spectra. The fact that the onset of long-range excitons is located near the energy gap is related to the mechanisms of large photocurrents measured in such energy regions.
