    Axion-like-particle search with high-intensity lasers

    We study ALP-photon-conversion within strong inhomogeneous electromagnetic fields as provided by contemporary high-intensity laser systems. We observe that probe photons traversing the focal spot of a superposition of Gaussian beams of a single high-intensity laser at fundamental and frequency-doubled mode can experience a frequency shift due to their intermittent propagation as axion-like-particles. This process is strongly peaked for resonant masses on the order of the involved laser frequencies. Purely laser-based experiments in optical setups are sensitive to ALPs in the eV\mathrm{eV} mass range and can thus complement ALP searches at dipole magnets.Comment: 25 pages, 2 figure

    Improved search for solar chameleons with a GridPix detector at CAST

    We report on a new search for solar chameleons with the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST). A GridPix detector was used to search for soft X-ray photons in the energy range from 200 eV to 10 keV from converted solar chameleons. No significant excess over the expected background has been observed in the data taken in 2014 and 2015. We set an improved limit on the chameleon photon coupling, beta(gamma) less than or similar to 5.7 x 10(10) for 1 < beta(m) < 10(6) at 95% C.L. improving our previous results by a factor two and for the first time reaching sensitivity below the solar luminosity bound for tachocline magnetic fields up to 12.5 T

    The IAXO Helioscope

    The IAXO (International Axion Experiment) is a fourth generation helioscope with a sensitivity, in terms of detectable signal counts, at least 104 better than CAST phase-I, resulting in sensitivity on ga¿ one order of magnitude better. To achieve this performance IAXO will count on a 8-coil toroidal magnet with 60 cm diameter bores and equipped with X-ray focusing optics into 0.20 cm2 spots coupled to ultra-low background Micromegas X-ray detectors. The magnet will be on a platform that will allow solar tracking for 12 hours per day. The next short term objectives are to prepare a Technical Design Report and to construct the first prototypes of the hardware main ingredients: demonstration coil, X-ray optics and low background detector while refining the physics case and studying the feasibility studies for Dark Matter axions

    Recent results in kaon physics

    A review of the present experimental status of the K → πνν (Kπνν) and other kaon decay analyses at experiments NA62 (CERN) and KOTO (J-PARC) is given. The Kπνν decay is one of the best candidates among the rare meson decays for indirect searches for new physics in the mass ranges complementary to those accessible by current accelerators. The Standard Model (SM) prediction of the branching fraction (B) of the Kπνν decay is lower than 10−10 in both neutral and charged modes. The NA62 experiment aims to measure the B of the charged mode with better than 10% precision. Three candidate events, compatible with the SM prediction, have been observed from a sample of 2.12×1012 K+ decays collected in 2016 and 2017 by NA62. More than twice the statistics is available in the 2018 dataset currently being analysed. The KOTO experiment in Japan aims to measure B(KL → π0νν) using a technique similar to NA62, but with much lower momentum. In the first dataset taken in 2015 zero signal candidate events were observed. The current status of the analysis of the 2016-2018 dataset with 1.4 times more data is presented.     Measurement of the very rare K + → π+νν¯ decay

    The NA62 experiment reports the branching ratio measurement BR(K+→π+νν¯)=(10.6−3.4+4.0|stat±0.9syst)×10−11 at 68% CL, based on the observation of 20 signal candidates with an expected background of 7.0 events from the total data sample collected at the CERN SPS during 2016–2018. This provides evidence for the very rare K+→π+νν¯ decay, observed with a significance of 3.4σ. The experiment achieves a single event sensitivity of (0.839 ± 0.054) × 10−11, corresponding to 10.0 events assuming the Standard Model branching ratio of (8.4 ± 1.0) × 10−11. This measurement is also used to set limits on BR(K+→ π+X), where X is a scalar or pseudo-scalar particle. Details are given of the analysis of the 2018 data sample, which corresponds to about 80% of the total data sample

    A gestural repertoire of 1-2year old human children : in search of the ape gestures

    This project was made possible with the generous financial help of the Baverstock Bequest to the Psychology and Neuroscience Department at the University of St Andrews.When we compare human gestures to those of other apes, it looks at first like there is nothing much to compare at all. In adult humans, gestures are thought to be a window into the thought processes accompanying language, and sign languages are equal to spoken language with all of its features. While some research firmly emphasises the difference between human gestures and those of other apes, the question about whether there are any commonalities has rarely been investigated, and is mostly confined to pointing gestures. The gestural repertoires of nonhuman ape species have been carefully studied and described with regard to their form and function – but similar approaches are much rarer in the study of human gestures. This paper applies the methodology commonly used in the study of nonhuman ape gestures to the gestural communication of human children in their second year of life. We recorded (n=13) children’s gestures in a natural setting with peers and caregivers in Germany and Uganda. Children employed 52 distinct gestures, 46 (89%) of which are present in the chimpanzee repertoire. Like chimpanzees, they used them both singly, and in sequences; and employed individual gestures flexibly towards different goals.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
