A multidimensional finite element method for CFD

    Get PDF
A finite element method is used to solve the equations of motion for 2- and 3-D fluid flow. The time-dependent equations are solved explicitly using quadrilateral (2-D) and hexahedral (3-D) elements, mass lumping, and reduced integration. A Petrov-Galerkin technique is applied to the advection terms. The method requires a minimum of computational storage, executes quickly, and is scalable for execution on computer systems ranging from PCs to supercomputers

Carbon Monoxide Exposure and Human Health

The primary objective of this report is to provide detailed information on the health effects of carbon monoxide. With this information, the community can judge for itself what action is deemed necessary to maintain or improve the health of its residents

Age-dependent female responses to a male ejaculate signal alter demographic opportunities for selection

    Get PDF
A central tenet of evolutionary explanations for ageing is that the strength of selection wanes with age. However, data on age-specific expression and benefits of sexually selected traits are lacking—particularly for traits subject to sexual conflict. We addressed this by using as a model the responses of Drosophila melanogaster females of different ages to receipt of sex peptide (SP), a seminal fluid protein transferred with sperm during mating. SP can mediate sexual conflict, benefitting males while causing fitness costs in females. Virgin and mated females of all ages showed significantly reduced receptivity in response to SP. However, only young virgin females also showed increased egg laying; hence, there was a narrow demographic window of maximal responses to SP. Males gained significant ‘per mating’ fitness benefits only when mating with young females. The pattern completely reversed in matings with older females, where SP transfer was costly. The overall benefits of SP transfer (hence opportunity for selection) therefore reversed with female age. The data reveal a new example of demographic variation in the strength of selection, with convergence and conflicts of interest between males and ageing females occurring over different facets of responses to a sexually antagonistic trait

A Phenomenological Study in Conflict and Conflict Resolution Methods of Rural African American Pastors

    Get PDF
This qualitative, phenomenological by design research aimed to identify the conflict resolution methods utilized by African American pastors who serve in rural locations and shepherd a flock of one hundred or fewer congregants. The study also sought to understand the background, origin, and perceived effectiveness of resolving congregational conflict from the specified demographic. As the shepherd of the flock, the pastor has the inherent responsibility to resolve conflict within the church. The church experiences conflict from numerous external sources; however, this research sought to address conflict within the congregation. This study collected data through the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict MODE Instrument. 71.4% of the research participants revealed the conflict resolution method of accommodating as the most commonly identified in the specific demographic. Structured open-ended question interviews determined the background, origin, and perceived effectiveness of the conflict resolution methods of the researched demographic. The results revealed that the research participants established and patterned conflict resolution methodology from their mentors in the ministry. The methodology was based on Scripture and the traditions passed on in the ministry from mentor to understudy. The patterns revealed a direct relationship between the methods of pastors and the methods of their respective mentors in the ministry. The influence of serving as an apprentice under a senior minister served as the most valuable educational experience, along with a reliance on Scripture, which formed the foundation of the conflict resolution method. The research participants equated longevity of service as an indicator of effective conflict resolution skills as a leader. Conflict resolution skills have become more commonplace in the seminary school curriculum due to overwhelming feedback from recent seminary graduates

Lessons learned from 32 years of retained ownership – TCSCF summary

Tri-County Steer Carcass Futurity (TCSCF) was started by Pottawattamie, Cass and Shelby County Cattleman’s Association in 1982. The nine member board wanted to know “what was the most profitable steer to feed?” In 2002, the SW Iowa cowcalf consigners utilizing the TCSCF program formed a service cooperative. The current 10 member board has 7 cow-calf producers, two allied industry representatives and one veterinarian

Reducing Crop Nutrient Applications: The Yield Reserve Program

    Get PDF
A proposed Yield Reserve Program designed to compensate farmers for any reduced yields resulting from reduced nitrogen (N) application rates below recommended rates is evaluated. Assuming that farmers currently follow extension recommendations for applying N, Yield Reserve Program participation reduces expected net revenue by 10to10 to 13/ha. The Yield Reserve Program reduces expected net revenue by 17to17 to 20/ha for farmers who apply N to maximize expected net revenue. Farmers costs of participation increase with lower probabilities of inadequate rainfall and higher corn prices and decline with higher N prices. The Yield Reserve Program can significantly reduce N applications to cropland, which may reduce N content of surface waters, but the costs to taxpayers and farmers will depend on how the program is implemented.compliance cost, nitrogen fertilizer, nonpoint source pollution, policy, yield response function, Crop Production/Industries,

    Lessons Learned While Clerking

    Get PDF
This Article explores some of the important lessons learned by a former law clerk of Judge Barry Schermer. Clark attributes many of the “soft skills” he learned in his legal career to Judge Schermer, and shares those with younger colleagues. The Author concludes Schermer’s advice on being practical, including delegating tasks and preparing for court, also taught him the professionalism he learned in his early days after law school
