    Effect of gelatin concentration, ribose and glycerol additions on the electrospinning process and physicochemical properties of gelatin nanofibers

    Rheological properties of gelatin-based solutions containing different concentrations of ribose and/or glycerol were assessed before electrospun mats were manufactured and their properties investigated. Characterization included morphology, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, solubility, swelling, the release of Maillard reaction (MR) products and their antioxidant activity. Gelatin concentrations >= 16 % w/v favoured the formation of smooth nanofibres in the electrospinning process due to their higher viscosity than for gelatin concentrations <= 14 % w/v. The diameters of the nanofibres were between 300 and 400 nm, irrespective of the concentration of gelatin and the additives. Heat treatments (80-110 degrees C) of the samples induced MR between gelatin and ribose, which provided the mats with water stability. Nevertheless, the fibrous morphology only remained for those mats heat-treated at 110 and 100 degrees C and containing 10 and 20 wt% ribose, respectively, after sample immersion in water. Heat treatment at 110 degrees C, along with glycerol addition, resulted in a decrease of solubility (from 100 to similar to 9 %) and provided a water absorption capacity (1,500-2,500 %), due to the crosslinking of ribose and glycerol with gelatin. Release of MR antioxidant compounds from the mats into water exhibited DPPH radical scavenging activity values up to 38 % (0.61 GAE mu g/mL).The authors would like to thank the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment of New Zealand (MBIE, Biocide Toolbox programme) and the Basque Government (IT1658-22) for funding. U radu se podrobno iznose osnovni podaci iz spisa te rečeni događaj analizira u širem društvenom kontekstu i prate se lokalna vjerovanja.The main interest of this essay is the analysis of the document from the State Archive in Venice (file: Capi del Consiglio de’ Dieci: Lettere di Rettori e di altre cariche) which is connected with the episode from 1748 when the inhabitants of the village Žrnove on the island of Korčula in Croatia opened tombs on the local cemetery in the fear of the vampires treating. This essay try to show some social circumstances connected with this event as well as a local vernacular tradition concerning superstitions

    Resin Film Infusion (RFI) Process Modeling for Large Transport Aircraft Wing Structures

    This investigation completed the verification of a three-dimensional resin transfer molding/resin film infusion (RTM/RFI) process simulation model. The model incorporates resin flow through an anisotropic carbon fiber preform, cure kinetics of the resin, and heat transfer within the preform/tool assembly. The computer model can predict the flow front location, resin pressure distribution, and thermal profiles in the modeled part. The formulation for the flow model is given using the finite element/control volume (FE/CV) technique based on Darcy's Law of creeping flow through a porous media. The FE/CV technique is a numerically efficient method for finding the flow front location and the fluid pressure. The heat transfer model is based on the three-dimensional, transient heat conduction equation, including heat generation. Boundary conditions include specified temperature and convection. The code was designed with a modular approach so the flow and/or the thermal module may be turned on or off as desired. Both models are solved sequentially in a quasi-steady state fashion. A mesh refinement study was completed on a one-element thick model to determine the recommended size of elements that would result in a converged model for a typical RFI analysis. Guidelines are established for checking the convergence of a model, and the recommended element sizes are listed. Several experiments were conducted and computer simulations of the experiments were run to verify the simulation model. Isothermal, non-reacting flow in a T-stiffened section was simulated to verify the flow module. Predicted infiltration times were within 12-20% of measured times. The predicted pressures were approximately 50% of the measured pressures. A study was performed to attempt to explain the difference in pressures. Non-isothermal experiments with a reactive resin were modeled to verify the thermal module and the resin model. Two panels were manufactured using the RFI process. One was a stepped panel and the other was a panel with two 'T' stiffeners. The difference between the predicted infiltration times and the experimental times was 4% to 23%

    Like other states, Iowa has recently looked to gambling as source of economic development. The turmoil surrounding Prairie Meadows racetrack in Iowa suggests that all gambling ventures are not risk free and that taxpayers may have to assume additional burdens derived from unsuccessful public sector ventures that are initiated in the name of economic development. Principles of participatory governance as well as fiscal prudence seem to have been violated in the rush to construct the first track for horse racing in the state of Iowa.
