    A Solution Merging Heuristic for the Steiner Problem in Graphs Using Tree Decompositions

    Fixed parameter tractable algorithms for bounded treewidth are known to exist for a wide class of graph optimization problems. While most research in this area has been focused on exact algorithms, it is hard to find decompositions of treewidth sufficiently small to make these al- gorithms fast enough for practical use. Consequently, tree decomposition based algorithms have limited applicability to large scale optimization. However, by first reducing the input graph so that a small width tree decomposition can be found, we can harness the power of tree decomposi- tion based techniques in a heuristic algorithm, usable on graphs of much larger treewidth than would be tractable to solve exactly. We propose a solution merging heuristic to the Steiner Tree Problem that applies this idea. Standard local search heuristics provide a natural way to generate subgraphs with lower treewidth than the original instance, and subse- quently we extract an improved solution by solving the instance induced by this subgraph. As such the fixed parameter tractable algorithm be- comes an efficient tool for our solution merging heuristic. For a large class of sparse benchmark instances the algorithm is able to find small width tree decompositions on the union of generated solutions.     Self-assembled functional molecular materials for optoelectronic applications

    There has been a growing interest to develop functional organic and organometallic materials in nano-scale by self assembly reactions as these materials could have unique electronic properties and applications. We have found that functionalized organometallic nano-wires which the formations are directed by weak Pt⋯Pt interactions along the dimension of the aggregates can be readily obtained by self-assembly reactions. These platinum(II) nano-wires exhibit interesting photophysical properties, vapochromic behavior, and could be used in the fabrication of organic (light-emitting) field-effect transistors.1,2 We have also found that thermally stable coordination polymers (with decomposition temperature up to 490°C), employing Zn 2+ as template metal ion and Schiff base or terpyridine as repeating chelating units, could be easily synthesized by self-assembly reactions. 3,4 These zinc (II) coordination polymers exhibit intense blue to green photoluminescence, and their thin-film samples have PL quantum yields up to 0.55. Polymer light-emitting devices (PLEDs) employing these coordination polymers as emitters give blue and green EL with turn-on voltage as low as 5 V and maximum efficiency up to 2.0 cd A-1. © 2009 Materials Research Society.published_or_final_versionThe 2008 Fall Meeting of the Materials Research Society, Boston, MA., 1-5 December, 2008.     Approximate Minimum Diameter

    We study the minimum diameter problem for a set of inexact points. By inexact, we mean that the precise location of the points is not known. Instead, the location of each point is restricted to a contineus region (\impre model) or a finite set of points (\indec model). Given a set of inexact points in one of \impre or \indec models, we wish to provide a lower-bound on the diameter of the real points. In the first part of the paper, we focus on \indec model. We present an O(21ϵdϵ2dn3)O(2^{\frac{1}{\epsilon^d}} \cdot \epsilon^{-2d} \cdot n^3 ) time approximation algorithm of factor (1+ϵ)(1+\epsilon) for finding minimum diameter of a set of points in dd dimensions. This improves the previously proposed algorithms for this problem substantially. Next, we consider the problem in \impre model. In dd-dimensional space, we propose a polynomial time d\sqrt{d}-approximation algorithm. In addition, for d=2d=2, we define the notion of α\alpha-separability and use our algorithm for \indec model to obtain (1+ϵ)(1+\epsilon)-approximation algorithm for a set of α\alpha-separable regions in time O(21ϵ2.n3ϵ10.sin(α/2)3)O(2^{\frac{1}{\epsilon^2}}\allowbreak . \frac{n^3}{\epsilon^{10} .\sin(\alpha/2)^3} )

    Continuity properties of measurable group cohomology

    A version of group cohomology for locally compact groups and Polish modules has previously been developed using a bar resolution restricted to measurable cochains. That theory was shown to enjoy analogs of most of the standard algebraic properties of group cohomology, but various analytic features of those cohomology groups were only partially understood. This paper re-examines some of those issues. At its heart is a simple dimension-shifting argument which enables one to `regularize' measurable cocycles, leading to some simplifications in the description of the cohomology groups. A range of consequences are then derived from this argument. First, we prove that for target modules that are Fr\'echet spaces, the cohomology groups agree with those defined using continuous cocycles, and hence they vanish in positive degrees when the acting group is compact. Using this, we then show that for Fr\'echet, discrete or toral modules the cohomology groups are continuous under forming inverse limits of compact base groups, and also under forming direct limits of discrete target modules. Lastly, these results together enable us to establish various circumstances under which the measurable-cochains cohomology groups coincide with others defined using sheaves on a semi-simplicial space associated to the underlying group, or sheaves on a classifying space for that group.     Absorbate-Induced Piezochromism in a Porous Molecular Crystal

    Atmospherically stable porous frameworks and materials are interesting for heterogeneous solid–gas applications. One motivation is the direct and selective uptake of pollutant/hazardous gases, where the material produces a measurable response in the presence of the analyte. In this report, we present a combined experimental and theoretical rationalization for the piezochromic response of a robust and porous molecular crystal built from an extensively fluorinated trispyrazole. The electronic response of the material is directly determined by analyte uptake, which provokes a subtle lattice contraction and an observable bathochromic shift in the optical absorption onset. Selectivity for fluorinated absorbates is demonstrated, and toluene is also found to crystallize within the pore. Furthermore, we demonstrate the application of electronic structure calculations to predict a physicochemical response, providing the foundations for the design of electronically tunable porous solids with the chemical properties required for development of novel gas-uptake media

    Defect study of Zn-doped p-type gallium antimonide using positron lifetime spectroscopy

    Defects in p-type Zn-doped liquid-encapsulated Czochralski - grown GaSb were studied by the positron lifetime technique. The lifetime measurements were performed on the as-grown sample at temperature varying from 15 K to 297 K. A positron trapping center having a characteristic lifetime of 317 ps was identified as the neutral VGa-related defect. Its concentration in the as-grown sample was found to be in the range of 1017-1018 cm-3. At an annealing temperature of 300 °C, the VGa-related defect began annealing out and a new defect capable of trapping positrons was formed. This newly formed defect, having a lifetime value of 379 ps, is attributed to a vacancy - Zn-defect complex. This defect started annealing out at a temperature of 580 °C. A positron shallow trap having binding energy and concentration of 75 meV and 1018 cm-3, respectively, was also observed in the as-grown sample. This shallow trap is attributed to positrons forming hydrogenlike Rydberg states with the ionized dopant acceptor Zn.published_or_final_versio

    Novel wide range speed control of permanent magnet brushless motor drives

    This paper presents a novel approach for wide range speed control of permanent magnet (PM) brushless motor drive, including both sinewave and squarewave versions. As compared with conventional flux-weakening control, the approach takes definite advantages that it can be applied to the squarewave PM brushless motor drive directly, and even to the motor drive with negligible mutual inductances between phase windings. Moreover, it is easier to implement than flux-weakening control because no coordinate transformation is needed. The key of this approach is to make use of the transformer EMF in such a way that it weakens the rotational EMF when the motor operate above the base speed, leading to achieve constant-power operation. Computer simulation and experimental results show that the proposed approach works well.published_or_final_versio

    Factors Affecting Sustainability Of Wetland Agriculture Within Lake Victoria Basin In Uganda

    In recent years, the high rate of conversion of wetlands for agriculture has raised environmental concerns in Uganda. A study was therefore conducted to identify issues that need to be addressed if communities are to continue deriving livelihoods from wetland agriculture, without causing stress to the wetlands of Lake Victoria basin. This was done by conducting household surveys and focus group discussions in two of the districts that border Lake Victoria. Wetland agriculture was found to be a significant source of livelihoods for resource poor communities, contributing over 60% of the household income. Farming was mainly done at a subsistence level. The study found that socio economic factors, poor farming practices and weak policies were contributing to the rapid conversion of wetlands. Concerted efforts need to be made by government institutions to sensitize communities on conservation of wetlands. Some of the policies need to be harmonized to avoid contradictions. Alternative sources of livelihoods must be created to ensure socio economic benefits and environmental conservation.
