Kinetic Model for Layer-by-Layer Crystal Growth in Chain Molecules

Get PDF
A kinetic model is proposed to describe the structure and rate of advancement of the growth front during crystallization. Solidification occurs through the mechanisms of surface nucleation and lateral spreading of the solid phase within layers in the vicinity of the growth front. The transformation from liquid to solid within each layer is described by an equation similar to the two-dimensional variant of the Johnson–Mehl–Avrami (JMA) equation, but in which the finite size and shape of the critical nucleus and the dynamic evolution of the solid fraction of the underlying layers are taken into account. Connection to the regime theory of Hoffman and co-workers, for surface nucleation and spreading in one or two dimensions, is also made. Given only molecular level information regarding surface nucleation rates, lateral spreading rates, and critical surface nucleus geometry, the resulting set of coupled nonlinear equations for solidification in each layer is numerically integrated in time to obtain the structure and rate of advancement of the growth front, for arbitrarily large systems and long times. Using this kinetic model with input parameters obtained from molecular dynamics simulations, a multiscale modeling analysis of crystal growth in n-pentacontane (C50) is performed.National Science Foundation (U.S.) Division of Civil, Mechanical and Manufacturing Innovation (CMMI-1235109

Charmonium dissociation by mesons in heavy-ion collisions

Get PDF
The charmonium dissociation by mesons in relativistic heavy-ion reactions is analyzed within the Regge approach. It is shown that the inclusion of the initial and final state interactions in the dissociation of J/Psi to bar{D}* D* close to threshold increases the cross section significantly and can not be neglected in comparison to the total dissociation rate. This is due to resonant bar{D}*-D* interactions in sqrt{s} close to the masses of the Psi(4.04) and Psi(4.16) mesons. We also investigate thermal effects of the (c bar{c}) width for such processes in the medium. All these effects change both the magnitude and the shape of the cross section as a function of sqrt{s}. The results obtained should be applied in the analysis of open and hidden charm production in heavy-ion collisions.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures; Talk given at ICTP 5th International Conference on Perspectives in Hadronic Physics, Trieste, Italy, 22-26 May 200

Two molecules of the title compound, C14H10N2OS, are hydrogen bonded about a center of inversion. In the molecule, the two aromatic rings are twisted by 37.27 (5)° with respect to one another. The azomethine bond is in the E configuration

Usage of NASA's Near Real-Time Solar and Meteorological Data for Monitoring Building Energy Systems Using RETScreen International's Performance Analysis Module

Get PDF
This paper describes building energy system production and usage monitoring using examples from the new RETScreen Performance Analysis Module, called RETScreen Plus. The module uses daily meteorological (i.e., temperature, humidity, wind and solar, etc.) over a period of time to derive a building system function that is used to monitor building performance. The new module can also be used to target building systems with enhanced technologies. If daily ambient meteorological and solar information are not available, these are obtained over the internet from NASA's near-term data products that provide global meteorological and solar information within 3-6 days of real-time. The accuracy of the NASA data are shown to be excellent for this purpose enabling RETScreen Plus to easily detect changes in the system function and efficiency. This is shown by several examples, one of which is a new building at the NASA Langley Research Center that uses solar panels to provide electrical energy for building energy and excess energy for other uses. The system shows steady performance within the uncertainties of the input data. The other example involves assessing the reduction in energy usage by an apartment building in Sweden before and after an energy efficiency upgrade. In this case, savings up to 16% are shown

Articulating a body of knowledge is an essential step toward developing a profession because it represents a broad consensus regarding the contents of the discipline. Without such a consensus, there is no way to validate a licensing examination, set a curriculum to prepare individuals for the examination, or formulate criteria for accrediting the curriculum. The SWEBOK project (http://www.swebok.org) is now nearing the end of the second of its three phases. Here we summarize the results to date and provide an overview of the project and its status. The Guide to the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge Repor ting on the SWEBOK project, the authors-who represent the project's editorial team-discuss the three-phase plan to characterize a body of knowledge, a vital step toward developing soft ware engineering as a profession.
