Large reduction with the Twisted Eguchi-Kawai model
We examine the breaking of symmetry recently reported for the Twisted
Eguchi-Kawai model (TEK). We analyse the origin of this behaviour and propose
simple modifications of twist and lattice action that could avoid the problem.
Our results show no sign of symmetry breaking and allow us to obtain values of
the large infinite volume string tension in agreement with extrapolations
from results based upon straightforward methods.Comment: latex file 14 pages, 4 figure
Simulating non-commutative field theory
Non-commutative (NC) field theories can be mapped onto twisted matrix models.
This mapping enables their Monte Carlo simulation, where the large N limit of
the matrix models describes the continuum limit of NC field theory. First we
present numeric results for 2d NC gauge theory of rank 1, which turns out to be
renormalizable. The area law for the Wilson loop holds at small area, but at
large area we observe a rotating phase, which corresponds to an Aharonov-Bohm
effect. Next we investigate the NC phi^4 model in d=3 and explore its phase
diagram. Our results agree with a conjecture by Gubser and Sondhi in d=4, who
predicted that the ordered regime splits into a uniform phase and a phase
dominated by stripe patterns.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, Lattice2002(theoretical

Eigenrhythms: Drum Track Bases
Describes the project on extracting the basic drum patterns from a large set of MIDI pop music renditions, and trying to describe them with a reduced-dimensional set of basis patterns. Includes some examples of basis functions derived from Independent Component Analysis, Linear Discriminant Analysis, and Nonnegative Matrix Factorization
Two-loop critical mass for Wilson fermions
We have redone a recent two-loop computation of the critical mass for Wilson
fermions in lattice QCD by evaluating Feynman integrals with the
coordinate-space method. We present the results for different types of infrared
regularization. We confirm both the previous numerical estimates and the power
of the coordinate-space method whenever high accuracy is needed.Comment: 13 LaTeX2e pages, 2 ps figures include
The roads to non-individuals (and how not to read their maps)
Ever since its beginnings, standard quantum mechanics has been associated
with a metaphysical view according to which the theory deals with
non-individual objects, i.e., objects deprived of individuality in some sense
of the term. We shall examine the grounds of the claim according to which
quantum mechanics is so closely connected with a metaphysics of
non-individuals. In particular, we discuss the attempts to learn the required
`metaphysical lessons' required by quantum mechanics coming from four distinct
roads: from the formalism of the theory, treating separately the case of the
physics and the underlying logic; from the ontology of the theory, understood
as the furniture of the world according to the theory; and, at last, we analyze
whether a metaphysics of non-individuals is indispensable from a purely
metaphysical point of view. We argue that neither non-individuality nor
individuality is not to be found imposed on us in any of these levels so that
it should be seen as a metaphysical addition to the theory, rather than as a
lesson from it.Comment: Forthcoming in J. R. B. Arenhart, R. W. Arroyo (eds.), Non-Reflexive

Assessment of culture and environment in the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development Study: Rationale, description of measures, and early data.
Neurodevelopmental maturation takes place in a social environment in addition to a neurobiological one. Characterization of social environmental factors that influence this process is therefore an essential component in developing an accurate model of adolescent brain and neurocognitive development, as well as susceptibility to change with the use of marijuana and other drugs. The creation of the Culture and Environment (CE) measurement component of the ABCD protocol was guided by this understanding. Three areas were identified by the CE Work Group as central to this process: influences relating to CE Group membership, influences created by the proximal social environment, influences stemming from social interactions. Eleven measures assess these influences, and by time of publication, will have been administered to well over 7,000 9-10 year-old children and one of their parents. Our report presents baseline data on psychometric characteristics (mean, standard deviation, range, skewness, coefficient alpha) of all measures within the battery. Effectiveness of the battery in differentiating 9-10 year olds who were classified as at higher and lower risk for marijuana use in adolescence was also evaluated. Psychometric characteristics on all measures were good to excellent; higher vs. lower risk contrasts were significant in areas where risk differentiation would be anticipated
Simulating Simplified Versions of the IKKT Matrix Model
We simulate a supersymmetric matrix model obtained from dimensional reduction
of 4d SU(N) super Yang-Mills theory (a 4d counter part of the IKKT model or IIB
matrix model). The eigenvalue distribution determines the space structure. The
measurement of Wilson loop correlators reveals a universal large N scaling.
Eguchi-Kawai equivalence may hold in a finite range of scale, which is also
true for the bosonic case. We finally report on simulations of a low energy
approximation of the 10d IKKT model, where we omit the phase of the Pfaffian
and look for evidence for a spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking.Comment: 4 pages, talk presented at LATTICE 2000 (Bangalore
Conservation laws and tachyon potentials in the sliver frame
Conservation laws have provided an elegant and efficient tool to evaluate the
open string field theory interaction vertex, they have been originally
implemented in the case where the string field is expanded in the Virasoro
basis. In this work we derive conservation laws in the case where the string
field is expanded in the so-called sliver -basis. As an
application of these conservation laws derived in the sliver frame, we compute
the open string field action relevant to the tachyon condensation and in order
to present not only an illustration but also an additional information, we
evaluate the action without imposing a gauge choice.Comment: 26 pages, some typos fixed, comments added, references adde
Do altmetrics promote Open Access? An exploratory analysis on altmetric differences between types of access in the field of Physics
The promotion of Open Science needs new metrics that encourage openness in scientific practices, and can help institutions to monitor it. In 2017, the European Commission (EC) created an Expert Group with the task of informing the commission on the possibility of including altmetric indicators as potential metrics that could foster and monitor open science advancements, but it failed to show how these metrics can help to foster Open Science. The current paper analyses differences in altmetric scores between Green OA publications, Gold OA publications and non OA publications. The goal of the paper is to empirically study whether altmetric indicators reinforce Open Access practices regardless of the type of access. We report a preliminary analysis based on two Physics journals. Our results show that gold OA documents are best covered in Altmetric.com and receive higher mentions than documents with other types of access. This is especially troublesome in the case of green OA, as it reflects that altmetric indicators do promote a very specific type of access closely linked with the publishing industry
