    The Karjan dam is located on the Deccan Basalt flows of Cretaceous - Eocene age in the Narmada valley in Gujarat state. A characteristic feature of the basalt flows in this area is conspicuous presence of a number of sub-horizontal weathered rock seams posing the foundation problems of settlement, sliding and seepage. Concrete shear keys have been provided to increase the sliding stability of dam blocks besides other remedial measures. Additional curtain grouting has been done after completion of the dam to reduce seepage

    PHACE syndrome is a rare neurocutaneous disorder characterised by an association of infantile haemangiomas with structural anomalies of brain, cerebral vasculature, eye, aorta and chest wall.1 Coarctation of aorta (COA) is most the common cardiac anomaly reported in PHACE syndrome. COA or interrupted aortic arch in PHACE is unique and complex both in location and character compared to the typical coarctation anatomy. Arterial tortuosity of the cerebral vasculature has been well described in literature in PHACE syndrome.     Critique on the Use of the Standardized Avian Acute Oral Toxicity Test for First Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides

    Avian risk assessments for rodenticides are often driven by the results of standardized acute oral toxicity tests without regards to a toxicant’s mode of action and time course of adverse effects. First generation anticoagulant rodenticides (FGARs) generally require multiple feedings over several days to achieve a threshold concentration in tissue and cause adverse effects. This exposure regimen is much different than that used in the standardized acute oral toxicity test methodology. Median lethal dose values derived from standardized acute oral toxicity tests underestimate the environmental hazard and risk of FGARs. Caution is warranted when FGAR toxicity, physiological effects, and pharmacokinetics derived from standardized acute oral toxicity testing are used for forensic confirmation of the cause of death in avian mortality incidents and when characterizing FGARs’ risks to free-ranging birds

    Review on special emphasis of bortezomib on relapsed/refractory myeloma

    Refractory or relapsed Multiple Myeloma (MM) is a plasma cell neoplasia characterized by paraproteins in the urine or serum and a bone marrow plasmacytosis of over 10%. Multiple/refractory myeloma is a neoplasm of plasma cells and exact cause of multiple myeloma is remain unidentified, it is characterized by accumulation of malignant plasma cells in the bone marrow, leading to bone marrow failure, anemia, skeletal destruction, renal failure, increased susceptibility to infection and hypercalcemia. The survival time for the patients with refractory or multiple myeloma can be prolonged with treatment of newer and more target specific approach. The proteasome inhibitors are an important class of anti-myeloma drugs that have efficacy to disrupt the proteolytic structure of tumor cells and enhancing their susceptibility to apoptosis. Bortezomib has a significant clinical efficacy against refractory multiple myeloma. Bortezomib is the most commonly used and clinically tested proteasome inhibitor and which is effective in prolonging the overall survival in several trials. Bortezomib combinations with other drugs such as dexamethasone and cyclophosphamide are the choice of treatment for standard risk patients following the mSMART guidelines. The success with lower dosage of bortezomib in elderly patient’s proven efficacious subcutaneous usage and its useful proteasome inhibitor to enhance patient’s compliance and reduces toxicity and costs of therapy. This review discusses on special emphasis of bortezomib on relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma as front-line treatment.

    QUALITY MANAGEMENT PRACTICES AND COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE OF SELECTED FOOD AND BEVERAGE MANUFACTURING FIRMS IN LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA

    The performance of Food and Beverages manufacturing firms is important to the development of the economy and this has been considered by researchers. In Nigeria, the decline in the performance of this sector in terms of competitive advantage has been noticed which could be as a result of a lack of quality management practices such as leadership behaviour, strategic quality planning, supplier quality management, process management and customer focus. The study investigated the effect of quality management practices on the competitive advantage of selected Food and Beverages manufacturing firms in Lagos State, Nigeria. The survey research design was adopted. The population of the study was 14, 591 top, middle and low-level management employees of the selected Food and Beverages manufacturing firms in Lagos State, Nigeria. A sample size of 491 was determined using the research advisor table. A simple random sampling technique was used. A validated questionnaire was used to collect data. Cronbach’s alpha reliability coefficients for the constructs ranged from 0.866 to 0.954. The response rate was 100%. Data were statistically analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics (multiple and hierarchical regression). Findings revealed that quality management practices had a significant effect on the competitive advantage of Food and Beverages manufacturing firms in Lagos State, (Adj.R2 = 0.117; F (5, 485) = 14.025, p < 0.05). The study concluded that quality management practices affected competitive advantage in Food and Beverages manufacturing firms in Lagos State, Nigeria. The study recommends that Food and Beverages manufacturing firms should encourage the adoption of quality management practices to enhance competitive advantage.  Article visualizations

    Self-supervised generative adverrsarial network for depth estimation in laparoscopic images

    Dense depth estimation and 3D reconstruction of a surgical scene are crucial steps in computer assisted surgery. Recent work has shown that depth estimation from a stereo image pair could be solved with convolutional neural networks. However, most recent depth estimation models were trained on datasets with per-pixel ground truth. Such data is especially rare for laparoscopic imaging, making it hard to apply supervised depth estimation to real surgical applications. To overcome this limitation, we propose SADepth, a new self-supervised depth estimation method based on Generative Adversarial Networks. It consists of an encoder-decoder generator and a discriminator to incorporate geometry constraints during training. Multi-scale outputs from the generator help to solve the local minima caused by the photometric reprojection loss, while the adversarial learning improves the framework generation quality. Extensive experiments on two public datasets show that SADepth outperforms recent state-of-the-art unsupervised methods by a large margin, and reduces the gap between supervised and unsupervised depth estimation in laparoscopic images

    Higher order antibunching is not a rare phenomenon

    Since the introduction of higher order nonclassical effects, higher order squeezing has been reported in a number of different physical systems but higher order antibunching is predicted only in three particular cases. In the present work, we have shown that the higher order antibunching is not a rare phenomenon rather it can be seen in many simple optical processes.
