A Manual of Expected Milestones in Childhood and Occupation-Based Interventions

    Get PDF
The purpose of this scholarly project was to develop a manual for parents of children ages birth to five years. The manual includes significant milestones and provides age-appropriate activities which can be used to facilitate development. A literature review was conducted to identify how play is used to achieve developmental milestones. Resources included journal articles and textbooks from the disciplines of occupational therapy, psychology, education, and medicine. A manual for parents was created and consists of a discussion on the importance of play in development, expected milestones, occupation-based interventions, and resources regarding child development. This manual is intended for distribution to parents at a group educational seminar lead by an occupational therapist. The components of this manual are guided by the Ecology of Human Performance Model. Child development can be optimized through the use of play activities to develop physical, social, emotional, and cognitive skills. Experiences in early childhood can hinder-or enhance developmental achievement later in life. The parent-manual product of this project will provide developmentally-appropriate occupation-based activities which can be incorporated into daily routines for children ages birth to five years

Das optimale E-Portfolio fĂĽr Ihre Bibliothek: Lizenzierungsentscheidungen und Bestandscontrolling fĂĽr elektronische Ressourcen

The optimal E-portfolio for your library: Licensing decisions and evaluation of electronic resources [translated title]. Objectives — By now academic libraries spend the majority of their budgets on electronic resources. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to develop a decision model which enables librarians to evaluate the efficiency of their databases, journals and e-books. Methods — Within the framework of a comprehensive economic analysis all relevant costs and benefits of electronic resources are identified and operationalised on the basis of appropriate indicators. Results — When applying the model it becomes apparent that an analysis of the overall performance creates a much broader foundation to decide about licensing electronic resources than costs per download alone. A valid database is an essential prerequisite. Conclusions — Using this model academic libraries may evaluate their holdings and decide on the optimal composition of their specific “E-portfolios”

    Get PDF

Every library faces the challenge of using the available acquisition budget as efficiently and appropriately as possible in accordance with the respective library mission. A survey of 181 institutions shows that, in addition to the classic costs per download, a variety of other decision parameters also play an important role. There also is a strong interest in inter-library exchange which could facilitate and optimize the institution-specific definition of decision criteria. In view of the increasing complexity of licensing models, systematic and continuous content controlling – independent of the hectic year-end business – is an essential prerequisite for being able to make sound licensing decisions

Disseminated Toxoplasmosis in a Patient with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma

Abstract : Toxoplasmosis is a well-recognized opportunistic disease in HIV-infected individuals that is caused by the reactivation of a previous infection, primarily in the central nervous system, during profound immunodeficiency. Toxoplasmosis has been described more rarely in patients with cancer and chemotherapy. We report a case of a patient with a history of chemotherapy for non-Hodgkin lymphoma who developed pain and progressive paresthesia of the right arm 6 weeks after remission. Relapsing lymphoma was suspected, and steroid and radiation treatment were initiated, but the patient died 5 days later due to multiple organ failure. Autopsy revealed disseminated toxoplasmosis. This case illustrates that toxoplasmosis should be suspected in patients with neoplastic disease, especially lymphomas, who present with unexplained neurologic, pulmonary, or febrile symptoms during or after chemotherap

Tackling the Root Cause of Surface-Induced Coagulation: Inhibition of FXII Activation to Mitigate Coagulation Propagation and Prevent Clotting

    Get PDF
Factor XII (FXII) is a zymogen present in blood that tends to adsorb onto the surfaces of blood-contacting medical devices. Once adsorbed, it becomes activated, initiating a cascade of enzymatic reactions that lead to surface-induced coagulation. This process is characterized by multiple redundancies, making it extremely challenging to prevent clot formation and preserve the properties of the surface. In this study, a novel modulatory coating system based on C1-esterase inhibitor (C1INH) functionalized polymer brushes, which effectively regulates the activation of FXII is proposed. Using surface plasmon resonance it is demonstrated that this coating system effectively repels blood plasma proteins, including FXII, while exhibiting high activity against activated FXII and plasma kallikrein under physiological conditions. This unique property enables the modulation of FXII activation without interfering with the overall hemostasis process. Furthermore, through dynamic Chandler loop studies, it is shown that this coating significantly improves the hemocompatibility of polymeric surfaces commonly used in medical devices. By addressing the root cause of contact activation, the synergistic interplay between the antifouling polymer brushes and the modulatory C1INH is expected to lay the foundation to enhance the hemocompatibility of medical device surfaces.© 2023 The Authors.
