The aim of this article is to take a look at the mental stress of reference staff in libraries on the basis of existing literature, to examine the interactions with customers from the perspective of library services and, in addition, to point out library-specific approaches to dealing with and preventing mental overload. For this purpose, the term Emotional Labor (Emotionsarbeit) is defined and discussed in the context of libary science. In addition, the paper shows how emotional work can affect the emotional inner life of reference staff in libraries and lead to mental stress and even overburdening. Resources for dealing with mental stress in the workplace are also presented. Possible solutions for coping and prevention for information staff are roughly outlined
