Quantification of nitrogen balance components in a commercial broiler barn
Characterizing the respective nitrogen (N) use efficiency requires understanding the N flow of inputs and outputs from a commercial broiler barn. In this study, an N mass balance was performed for one entire growing cycle. The objectives were to quantify, sample, and analyze all N components entering and leaving the barn. The N from feed, chickens, and bedding material was considered as inputs, the outputs included the N accretion in mature broilers, the total N emissions (NTNE), the N accumulation in litter, and the N of mortality. Of particular relevance was the determination of an appropriate method to mirror the heterogenic texture of the litter. Litter samples were collected weekly according to a defined procedure. The major N input was feed N, accounting for 99% of the total N input. After the 36-day growing cycle, the N outputs were portioned as follows: 59% (1741.3 kg N) in mature broilers, 37% (1121.3 kg N) accumulated in litter, and 4% in NTNE (114.3 kg N). The N accumulations in broiler tissue and litter agree well with other studies. The measured emissions were consistently lower compared to other references, due to the fact that these references were mainly based on studies where broilers were raised on built-up litter. In contrast to in situ quantified N emissions in this study, other published values were assumed to be the difference of N between inputs and outputs. This study illustrates that extensive sampling of litter is a prerequisite for calculating litter masses. The accurate specification of the litter texture proved to be crucial within the mass balance approach. With this information, the feasible improvements within management practices can be identified
Statistical mechanics of random two-player games
Using methods from the statistical mechanics of disordered systems we analyze
the properties of bimatrix games with random payoffs in the limit where the
number of pure strategies of each player tends to infinity. We analytically
calculate quantities such as the number of equilibrium points, the expected
payoff, and the fraction of strategies played with non-zero probability as a
function of the correlation between the payoff matrices of both players and

Growth Histories in Bimetric Massive Gravity
We perform cosmological perturbation theory in Hassan-Rosen bimetric gravity
for general homogeneous and isotropic backgrounds. In the de Sitter
approximation, we obtain decoupled sets of massless and massive scalar
gravitational fluctuations. Matter perturbations then evolve like in Einstein
gravity. We perturb the future de Sitter regime by the ratio of matter to dark
energy, producing quasi-de Sitter space. In this more general setting the
massive and massless fluctuations mix. We argue that in the quasi-de Sitter
regime, the growth of structure in bimetric gravity differs from that of

Scientific, institutional and personal rivalries among Soviet geographers in the late Stalin era
Scientific, institutional and personal rivalries between three key centres of geographical research and scholarship (the Academy of Sciences Institute of Geography and the Faculties of Geography at Moscow and Leningrad State Universities) are surveyed for the period from 1945 to the early 1950s. It is argued that the debates and rivalries between members of the three institutions appear to have been motivated by a variety of scientific, ideological, institutional and personal factors, but that genuine scientific disagreements were at least as important as political and ideological factors in influencing the course of the debates and in determining their final outcome
On the Relation Between Peak Luminosity and Parent Population of Type Ia Supernovae: A New Tool for Probing the Ages of Distant Galaxies
We study the properties of Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) as functions of the
radial distance from their host galaxy centers. Using a sample of 62 SNe Ia
with reliable luminosity, reddening, and decline rate determinations, we find
no significant radial gradients of SNe Ia peak absolute magnitudes or decline
rates in elliptical+S0 galaxies, suggesting that the diversity of SN properties
is not related to the metallicity of their progenitors. We do find that the
range in brightness and light curve width of supernovae in spiral galaxies
extends to brighter, broader values. These results are interpreted as support
for an age, but not metallicity, related origin of the diversity in SNe Ia. If
confirmed with a larger and more accurate sample of data, the age-luminosity
relation would offer a new and powerful tool to probe the ages and age
gradients of stellar populations in galaxies at redshift as high as .
The absence of significant radial gradients in the peak and colors of SNe Ia supports the redding correction method of Phillips et
al (1999). We find no radial gradient in residuals from the SN Ia
luminosity-width relation, suggesting that the relation is not affected by
properties of the progenitor populations and supporting the reliability of

Moduli Redefinitions and Moduli Stabilisation
Field redefinitions occur in string compactifications at the one loop level.
We review arguments for why such redefinitions occur and study their effect on
moduli stabilisation and supersymmetry breaking in the LARGE volume scenario.
For small moduli, although the effect of such redefinitions can be larger than
that of the corrections in both the K\"ahler and scalar potentials,
they do not alter the structure of the scalar potential. For the less well
motivated case of large moduli, the redefinitions can dominate all other terms
in the scalar potential. We also study the effect of redefinitions on the

The CARMENES search for exoplanets around M dwarfs - Photospheric parameters of target stars from high-resolution spectroscopy
The new CARMENES instrument comprises two high-resolution and high-stability
spectrographs that are used to search for habitable planets around M dwarfs in
the visible and near-infrared regime via the Doppler technique. Characterising
our target sample is important for constraining the physical properties of any
planetary systems that are detected. The aim of this paper is to determine the
fundamental stellar parameters of the CARMENES M-dwarf target sample from
high-resolution spectra observed with CARMENES. We also include several M-dwarf
spectra observed with other high-resolution spectrographs, that is CAFE, FEROS,
and HRS, for completeness. We used a {chi}^2 method to derive the stellar
parameters effective temperature T_eff, surface gravity log g, and metallicity
[Fe/H] of the target stars by fitting the most recent version of the
PHOENIX-ACES models to high-resolution spectroscopic data. These stellar
atmosphere models incorporate a new equation of state to describe spectral
features of low-temperature stellar atmospheres. Since T_eff, log g, and [Fe/H]
show degeneracies, the surface gravity is determined independently using
stellar evolutionary models. We derive the stellar parameters for a total of
300 stars. The fits achieve very good agreement between the PHOENIX models and
observed spectra. We estimate that our method provides parameters with
uncertainties of {sigma} T_eff = 51 K, {sigma} log g = 0.07, and {sigma} [Fe/H]
= 0.16, and show that atmosphere models for low-mass stars have significantly
improved in the last years. Our work also provides an independent test of the
new PHOENIX-ACES models, and a comparison for other methods using
low-resolution spectra. In particular, our effective temperatures agree well
with literature values, while metallicities determined with our method exhibit
a larger spread when compared to literature results
Prognostic impact of Claudin 18.2 in gastric and esophageal adenocarcinomas
INTRODUCTION: The tight junction molecule Claudin 18.2 is selectively expressed in healthy and malignant gastric epithelial tissue and is a promising therapy target for high Claudin 18.2 expressing adenocarcinomas of the esophagogastric junction and stomach (AEG/S). METHODS: This study analyzed the prevalence, characteristics and prognostic impact of Claudin 18.2 expression in primary tumor, lymph node and distant metastasis in a large Caucasian AGE/S cohort with 414 patients. RESULTS: Claudin 18.2 was highly expressed in 17.1% of primary tumors, 26.7% of lymph node metastasis and 16.7% of distant metastasis. High Claudin 18.2 expression in lymph node metastasis and primary tumors correlated significantly (p < 0.001). High expression of Claudin 18.2 was neither associated with histomorphogical subtype, or tumor state, nor with overall survival. CONCLUSION: In Caucasian AEG/S patients, 17.1% appeared to be eligible for an anti-Claudin 18.2 therapy. Claudin 18.2 expression itself has no impact on prognosis and is not related to any tumor subtype
