    The double life of serotonin metabolites: in the mood for joining neuronal and immune systems

    Neuroimmune system is nowadays considered as one complex, but unique example of coordination between cellular and molecular networks, only apparently segregated, but strictly collaborating for the maintenance of body integrity. Too often, serotonin and its metabolites have been considered merely as neurotransmitters, when they have multiple effects spreading from the modulation of mood and behavioral processes to the regulation of a wide range of physiologic and pathophysiologic processes in most human organs, not least the immune response. The purpose of this review is to highlight the importance of metabolites generated along the serotonin pathway in the constant dialogue between neuroendocrine and immune systems; moreover, we would like to point out that the molecules produced in the two main routes of tryptophan metabolism are involved in a loop of self-regulation aimed at maintaining the equilibrium between these two metabolic pathways in the neuroimmune system, in both physiologic and pathologic conditions

    A Multi Size-Level Assessment of Benthic Marine Communities in a Coastal Environment: Are They Different Sides of the Same Coin?

    Organism body size has been demonstrated to be a discriminating element in shaping the response of living beings to environmental factors, thus playing a fundamental role in community structuring. Despite the importance of studies elucidating relations among communities of different size levels in ecosystems, the attempts that have been made in this sense are still very scarce and a reliable approach for these research still has to be defined. We characterized the benthic communities of bacteria, microbial eukaryotes, meiofauna and macrofauna in a coastal environment, encompassing a 10000-fold gradient in body size, testing and discussing a mixed approach of molecular fingerprinting for microbes and morphological observations for meio- and macrofauna. We found no correlation among structures of the different size-level communities: this suggests that community composition at one size-level could have no (or very low) influence on the community composition at other size-levels. Moreover, each community responds in a different way to the environmental parameters and with a degree of sensitivity which seems to increase with organism size. Therefore, our data indicate that the characterization of all the different size levels is clearly a necessity in order to study the dynamics really acting in a system

    La elaboración del presente Proyecto de Intervención, pretende la optimización del proceso de emisión de las certificaciones previsionales de servicios y remuneraciones en busca de la eficiencia en la labor; la economicidad de procedimientos, la modernización de los métodos de producción, la despapelización, la disminución del error humano, la transparencia, la celeridad en la producción, y el perfeccionamiento de las comunicaciones con los organismos externos que interactúan en cada temática propuesta. Inscribiéndose en el campo de Administración y Finanzas de las Políticas y Estrategias de Gestión Universitaria, abarcará dimensiones que reestructuren procesos vigentes llevados a cabo por la Dirección de Certificaciones Previsionales de la Dirección General de Personal (DCP) en forma artesanal en procesos sistematizados a través de la obtención de una herramienta informática aún no desarrollada. Requerir este sistema es el comienzo de un proceso administrativo que implicará la reelaboración de normativas que autoricen el desarrollo del sistema por parte del Centro Superior para el Procesamiento de la Información de la Universidad Nacional de La Plata (CeSPI) y de las que ordenen su implementación, así como la concreción de convenios o actas acuerdo con organismos externos para la transmisión de información. Deberán habilitarse nuevos mecanismos y/o circuitos de comunicación a través de la elaboración de guías de procedimientos que se pondrán a disposición de los distintos actores que queden involucrados en la propuesta, así como la organización de talleres de comunicación con los operadores de los servicios de las Facultades y Dependencias que deberán asumir roles de asesores o ejecutores de las nuevas modalidades de trabajo emergentes.The preparation of this Intervention Project aims to optimize the process of issuing the social security certifications of services and remunerations in search of efficiency in the work; the inexpensiveness of procedures, the modernization of production methods, paperwork, the reduction of human error, transparency, speed in production, and the improvement of communications with external organizations that interact in each proposed topic. Enrolling in the field of Administration and Finance of University Management Policies and Strategies, it will cover dimensions that restructure current processes carried out by the Directorate of Social Security Certifications of the General Directorate of Personnel (DCP) in an artisanal way in systematized processes through obtaining a computer tool not yet developed. Requiring this system is the beginning of an administrative process that will involve the re-elaboration of regulations that authorize the development of the system by the Higher Center for Information Processing of the National University of La Plata (CeSPI) and those that order its implementation. , as well as the concretion of agreements or acts of agreement with external organizations for the transmission of information.     Serotonin Pathway in Neuroimmune Network

    Once considered merely as a neurotransmitter, serotonin (5-HT) now enjoys a renewed reputation as an interlocutor in the dense and continuous dialogue between neuroendocrine and immune systems. In the last decades, a role has been depicted for serotonin and its derivatives as modulators of several immunological events, due to the expression of specific receptors or enzymes controlling 5-HT metabolism in diverse immune cell types. A growing body of evidence suggests that the effects of molecules belonging to the 5-HT pathways on the neuroimmune communication may be relevant in the clinical outcome of autoimmune/inflammatory pathologies of the central nervous system (CNS), such as multiple sclerosis, but also in Alzheimer’s disease, or in mood disorders and major depression. Moreover, since the predominance of 5-HT is produced by enterochromaffin cells of the gastrointestinal tract, where 5-HT and its derivatives are important mucosal signalling molecules giving rise to the so-called “brain-gut axis”, alterations in brain-gut communication are also involved in the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of several psychiatric and neurologic disorders. Here we illustrate how functional interactions between immune and neuronal cells are crucial to orchestrate tissue homeostasis and integrity, and the role of serotonin pathway components as pillars of the neuroimmune system

    Synthesis and Crystal Structure of Bis(2-phenylpyridine-C,N')-bis(acetonitrile)iridium(III)hexafluorophosphate Showing Three Anion/Cation Couples in the Asymmetric Unit

    The title compound bis(2-phenylpyridine-C,N')-bis(acetonitrile)iridium(III)hexafluorophosphate, a six-coordinate iridium(III) complex, crystallizes in the P-1 space group. Iridium is in a distorted octahedral (n = 6) coordination with the N,C' atoms of two phenylpyridine and the N atoms of two acetonitrile ligands. The peculiarity of this structure is that three independent moieties of the title compound and three PF6− anions, to counterbalance the charge, are observed in the asymmetric unit and this is a rather uncommon fact among the Cambridge Crystallographic Database (CSD) entries. The three couples are almost identical conformers with very similar torsional angles. The packing, symmetry, and space group were accurately analyzed and described also by means of Hirshfeld surface analysis, which is able to underline subtle differences among the three anion/cation couples in the asymmetric unit. The driving force of the packing is the clustering of the aromatic rings and the maximization of acetonitrile:PF6− interactions. The asymmetry of the cluster is the cause of the unusual number of moieties in the asymmetric unit
