Towards Building Curricula for Fostering Autonomous Vocabulary Learning: a Case of Vietnamese EFL Context
Adopting a problem-solving approach to curriculum design, this paper is an attempt to illustrate a case of a Vietnamese university where the vocabulary learning and teaching practices are not satisfactory. Drawing on relevant research literature in the field, it first identified the problems associated with the underachievement of learners in terms of vocabulary learning. Several suggestions would then be made towards integrating into the existing curricula elements of a learner autonomy strand where learners find ways to relate the public and private learning domains
Cattle as a consistently resilient agricultural commodity
This study compares a range of agricultural commodities over periods of varying economic circumstances. These commodities are examined over three categories, including returns, risk, and contribution to portfolio optimisation. Consistency in these categories is determined over four equal three-year stages which comprise pre-GFC (Global Financial Crisis), GFC, post-GFC and post-post GFC. To demonstrate resilience in the most extreme circumstances, the study uses Conditional Value at Risk (CVaR), which measures extreme risk in the tail of a distribution, as the risk measure and risk-return optimiser. The study thus provides a unique and comprehensive extreme-risk based focus which identifies and ranks the consistency of performance of agricultural commodities over a range of criteria and conditions. Cattle commodities consistently demonstrate the strongest overall performance in the categories examined
On the Stability and the Approximation of Branching Distribution Flows, with Applications to Nonlinear Multiple Target Filtering
We analyse the exponential stability properties of a class of measure-valued
equations arising in nonlinear multi-target filtering problems. We also prove
the uniform convergence properties w.r.t. the time parameter of a rather
general class of stochastic filtering algorithms, including sequential Monte
Carlo type models and mean eld particle interpretation models. We illustrate
these results in the context of the Bernoulli and the Probability Hypothesis
Density filter, yielding what seems to be the first results of this kind in
this subject
Do nonparametric measures of extreme equity risk change the parametric ordinal ranking? Evidence from Asia
There has been much discussion in the literature about how central measures of equity risk such as standard deviation fail to account for extreme tail risk of equities. Similarly, parametric measures of value at risk (VaR) may also fail to account for extreme risk as they assume a normal distribution which is often not the case in practice. Nonparametric measures of extreme risk such as nonparametric VaR and conditional value at risk (CVaR) have often been found to overcome this problem by measuring actual tail risk without applying any predetermined assumptions. However, this article argues that it is not just the actual risk of equites that is important to investor choices, but also the relative (ordinal) risk of equities compared to each other. Using an applied setting of industry portfolios in a variety of Asian countries (benchmarked to the United States), over crisis and non-crisis periods, this article finds that nonparametric measures of VaR and CVaR may provide only limited new information to investors about relative risk in the portfolios examined as there is a high degree of similarity found in relative industry risk when using nonparametric metrics as compared to central or parametric measures such as standard deviation and parametric VaR
Isogeometric analysis for functionally graded microplates based on modified couple stress theory
Analysis of static bending, free vibration and buckling behaviours of
functionally graded microplates is investigated in this study. The main idea is
to use the isogeometric analysis in associated with novel four-variable refined
plate theory and quasi-3D theory. More importantly, the modified couple stress
theory with only one material length scale parameter is employed to effectively
capture the size-dependent effects within the microplates. Meanwhile, the
quasi-3D theory which is constructed from a novel seventh-order shear
deformation refined plate theory with four unknowns is able to consider both
shear deformations and thickness stretching effect without requiring shear
correction factors. The NURBS-based isogeometric analysis is integrated to
exactly describe the geometry and approximately calculate the unknown fields
with higher-order derivative and continuity requirements. The convergence and
verification show the validity and efficiency of this proposed computational
approach in comparison with those existing in the literature. It is further
applied to study the static bending, free vibration and buckling responses of
rectangular and circular functionally graded microplates with various types of
boundary conditions. A number of investigations are also conducted to
illustrate the effects of the material length scale, material index, and
length-to-thickness ratios on the responses of the microplates.Comment: 57 pages, 14 figures, 18 table
Novel roles of HP1a and Mcm10 in DNA replication, genome maintenance and photoreceptor cell differentiation.
Both Mcm10 and HP1a are known to be required for DNA replication. However, underlying mechanism is not clarified yet especially for HP1. Knockdown of both HP1a and Mcm10 genes inhibited the progression of S phase in Drosophila eye imaginal discs. Proximity Ligation Assay (PLA) demonstrated that HP1a is in close proximity to DNA replication proteins including Mcm10, RFC140 and DNA polymerase ε 255 kDa subunit in S-phase. This was further confirmed by co-immunoprecipitation assay. The PLA signals between Mcm10 and HP1a are specifically observed in the mitotic cycling cells, but not in the endocycling cells. Interestingly, many cells in the posterior regions of eye imaginal discs carrying a double knockdown of Mcm10 and HP1a induced ectopic DNA synthesis and DNA damage without much of ectopic apoptosis. Therefore, the G1-S checkpoint may be affected by knockdown of both proteins. This event was also the case with other HP family proteins such as HP4 and HP6. In addition, both Mcm10 and HP1a are required for differentiation of photoreceptor cells R1, R6 and R7. Further analyses on several developmental genes involved in the photoreceptor cell differentiation suggest that a role of both proteins is mediated by regulation of the lozenge gene
A Planarity Test via Construction Sequences
Optimal linear-time algorithms for testing the planarity of a graph are
well-known for over 35 years. However, these algorithms are quite involved and
recent publications still try to give simpler linear-time tests. We give a
simple reduction from planarity testing to the problem of computing a certain
construction of a 3-connected graph. The approach is different from previous
planarity tests; as key concept, we maintain a planar embedding that is
3-connected at each point in time. The algorithm runs in linear time and
computes a planar embedding if the input graph is planar and a

A Methodology to Engineer and Validate Dynamic Multi-level Multi-agent Based Simulations
This article proposes a methodology to model and simulate complex systems,
based on IRM4MLS, a generic agent-based meta-model able to deal with
multi-level systems. This methodology permits the engineering of dynamic
multi-level agent-based models, to represent complex systems over several
scales and domains of interest. Its goal is to simulate a phenomenon using
dynamically the lightest representation to save computer resources without loss
of information. This methodology is based on two mechanisms: (1) the activation
or deactivation of agents representing different domain parts of the same
phenomenon and (2) the aggregation or disaggregation of agents representing the
