    Preliminary phylogenetic analysis of the Andean clade and the placement of new Colombian blueberries (Ericaceae, Vaccinieae)

    The blueberry tribe Vaccinieae (Ericaceae) is particularly diverse in South America and underwent extensive radiation in Colombia where many endemics occur. Recent fi eldwork in Colombia has resulted in valuable additions to the phylogeny and as well in the discovery of morphologically noteworthy new species that need to be phylogenetically placed before being named. Th is is particularly important, as the monophyly of many of the studied genera have not been confi rmed. In order to advance our understanding of the relationships within neotropical Vaccinieae and advice the taxonomy of the new blueberry relatives, here we present the most comprehensive phylogenetic analysis for the Andean clade. Anthopterus, Demosthenesia, and Pellegrinia are among the putative Andean genera recovered as monophyletic, while other eight Andean genera were not. Th e analyses also showed that genera that have been traditionally widely defi ned are non-monophyletic and could be further split into more discrete groups. Four newly discovered Colombian Vaccinieae are placed in the monophyletic Satyria s.s. and the Psammisia I clade. Although these new species are endemic to the Colombian Western Cordillera and Chocó biogeographic region and three are not known outside of Las Orquídeas National Park, they do not form sister pairs

    Endocrine Therapy Initiation and Medical Oncologist Utilization Among Women Diagnosed with Ductal Carcinoma in Situ

    Background. Though randomized clinical trials have demonstrated a reduction in second breast events with endocrine therapy among women with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), use of these therapies remains highly variable. The purpose of this study was to evaluate patient and treatment-related factors associated with endocrine therapy initiation and medical oncology specialty utilization after DCIS. Materials and Methods. We identified women with a DCIS diagnosis during 2006-2010 in the North Carolina Central Cancer Registry with linked public and private insurance claims in the University of North Carolina Integrated Cancer Information Surveillance System data resource. Multivariable generalized linear regression models were used to estimate risk ratios (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for endocrine therapy initiation in the year following DCIS diagnosis. Results. Among 2,090 women with a DCIS diagnosis, 37% initiated endocrine therapy. Initiation was less common among women aged 75+ at diagnosis (RR=0.79; 95% CI: 0.64-0.97 vs. age 45-54) and women treated with breast-conserving surgery (BCS) who did not receive radiation (RR=0.63; 95% CI: 0.50-0.78 vs. BCS plus radiation). Consultation with a medical oncologist was strongly associated with endocrine therapy initiation (RR=1.40; 95% CI: 1.23-1.61). Women who saw a medical oncologist more often had private insurance, higher census tract-level income, hormone receptor positive disease, and treatment with BCS and radiation. Conclusion. Treatment strategies for DCIS remain controversial. Our data suggest that endocrine therapy is more often used in addition to standard therapies such as BCS plus radiation, rather than as an alternative to radiation

    Global humid tropics forest structural condition and forest structural integrity maps

    Remotely sensed maps of global forest extent are widely used for conservation assessment and planning. Yet, there is increasing recognition that these efforts must now include elements of forest quality for biodiversity and ecosystem services. Such data are not yet available globally. Here we introduce two data products, the Forest Structural Condition Index (SCI) and the Forest Structural Integrity Index (FSII), to meet this need for the humid tropics. The SCI integrates canopy height, tree cover, and time since disturbance to distinguish short, open-canopy, or recently deforested stands from tall, closed-canopy, older stands typical of primary forest. The SCI was validated against estimates of foliage height diversity derived from airborne lidar. The FSII overlays a global index of human pressure on SCI to identify structurally complex forests with low human pressure, likely the most valuable for maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem services. These products represent an important step in maturation from conservation focus on forest extent to forest stands that should be considered "best of the last" in international policy settings
