    Human Resources as Ethical Gatekeepers: Hiring Ethics and Employee Selection

    The act of hiring an individual can have considerable ethical and legal implications for an organization. To better identify the concepts that influence hiring and employment selection ethics, a review of the recent literature found several areas of importance for both academics and hiring managers alike. Past researchers claim hiring managers are influenced by the concepts of moral obligation, diversity, antidiscrimination, integrity, and employment fairness whenever they embark on hiring new personnel. Awareness and action in these areas will lead to motivating factors which can change attitudes, while allowing ethical hiring practices to shape organizational culture. The literature presents a dichotomy of understanding that when organizations use a defined ethical hiring standard, employers are more likely to recruit and hire ethical candidates. This understanding creates the assumptions that managers are obligated with the responsibility of being ethical gatekeepers for their respective organization

    Caracterización y conservación de la piedra usada en la Catedral de Granada, España

    This paper summarizes a study carried out on the Granada Cathedral which includes studies of indicators, factors and mechanisms of deterioration. A complete chemical and physical characterization of altered and unaltered material from the quarries and the building has been made. Eight commercial treatment products have been tested on the main stone-type used in the monument, including two accelerated weathering tests (salt crystallization and SO2 chemical attack). Some conservation proposals have been made.Este artículo recoge un estudio llevado a cabo sobre la Catedral de Granada que incluye la determinación de los indicadores, factores y mecanismos de deterioro. Asimismo se ha realizado una completa caracterización física y química del material alterado del edificio e inalterado de cantera. Se han probado ocho productos comerciales aplicados al principal tipo de piedra existente en el monumento, incluyendo la realización de dos ensayos de alteración acelerada (cristalización de sales y ataque químico con atmósfera de SO2. Como punto final se recogen algunas recomendaciones de cara a una posible intervención

    This paper presents a Monte Carlo (MC) simulation tool which is applied to describe the ion beam induced damage generated by electronic excitation in LiNbO3. Based on a previously published thermal spike based analytical model, the MC technique allows for a more flexible and accurate treatment of the problem. A main advantage of this approach with respect to the analytical one is the possibility of studying the role of statistical fluctuations, relevant at low fluences. The paper recalls the main features of the physical model, describes the MC algorithm, and compares simulation results to experimental data (irradiations of LiNbO3 using silicon ions at 5 and 7.5 MeV and oxygen ions at 5 MeV). © 2006 American Institute of Physics.Peer Reviewe

    Semaphorin3a disrupts podocyte foot processes causing acute proteinuria

    Semaphorin3a was discovered as a secreted guidance protein that acts as a chemorepellent to migrating axons and endothelial cells. In the adult mouse kidney, it is expressed in podocytes and collecting tubules. Here, we show that exogenous semaphorin3a caused acute nephrotic range proteinuria associated with podocyte foot process effacement and fusion, endothelial cell damage, decreased vascular endothelial growth factor-A receptor expression, and downregulation of the slit-diaphragm proteins podocin, nephrin, and CD2-associated protein. When vascular endothelial growth factor 165 was administered at the same time as Semaphorin3a, no proteinuria or renal ultrastructural abnormalities occurred, suggesting that semaphorin3a effects may be mediated, in part, by downregulation of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 signaling. Our findings indicate that a balance of semaphorin3a to vascular endothelial growth factor-A may be important for glomerular filtration barrier homeostasis

    The Orbit of the New Milky Way Globular Cluster FSR1716 =VVV-GC05

    Indexación: Scopus.We use deep, multi-epoch near-IR images of the VISTA Variables in the Via Lictea (VVV) Survey to measure proper motions (PMs) of stars in the Milky Way globular cluster (GC) FSR1716 = VVV-GC05. The colormagnitude diagram of this object, made by using PM-selected members, shows an extended horizontal branch, nine confirmed RR Lyrae (RRL) members in the instability strip, and possibly several hotter stars extending to the blue. Based on the fundamental-mode (ab-type) RRL stars that move coherently with the cluster, we confirmed that FSR1716 is an Oosterhoff I GC with a mean period aPabn = 0.574 days. Intriguingly, we detect tidal extensions to both sides of this cluster in the spatial distribution of PM-selected member stars. Also, one of the confirmed RRabs is located -11 arcmin in projection from the cluster center, suggesting that FSR1716 may be losing stars due to the gravitational interaction with the Galaxy. We also measure radial velocities (RVs) for five cluster red giants selected using the PMs. The combination of RVs and PMs allow us to compute for the first time the orbit of this GC, using an updated Galactic potential. The orbit results to be confined within|Zmax| < 2.0 kpc, and has eccentricity 0.4 < e < 0.6, with perigalactic distance 1.5 < Rperi (kpc) < 2.3, and apogalactic distance 5.3 < Rapo (kpc) < 6.4. We conclude that, in agreement with its relatively low metallicity ([Fe/H] =-1.4 dex), this is an inner-halo GC plunging into the disk of the Galaxy. As such, this is a unique object with which to test the dynamical processes that contribute to the disruption of Galactic GCs. © 2018. The American Astronomical Society.
