The authors inform about the composition and distribution of phytoplanktonic community between the first 75 m of depth in Bransfield Strait y around the Elephant island, during the ANTAR X expedition in the 1999 Austral Summer (22nd–29th January 1999). The higher cellular concentration (500 cel/mL) was given by the autotrophic nanoplankton, with a high density mainly on the bay stations and down the first 25 m of depth. Among the most representative species we have Leucocryptos marina, Phaeocystis antarctica, the Monadas and the pennate diatoms. Introducing I2Head database
I2Head database has been created with the aim to become an optimal reference for low cost gaze estimation. It exhibits the following outstanding characteristics: it takes into account key aspects of low resolution eye tracking technology; it combines images of users gazing at different grids of points from alternative positions with registers of user's head position and it provides calibration information of the camera and a simple 3D head model for each user. Hardware used to build the database includes a 6D magnetic sensor and a webcam. A careful calibration method between the sensor and the camera has been developed to guarantee the accuracy of the data. Different sessions have been recorded for each user including not only static head scenarios but also controlled displacements and even free head movements. The database is an outstanding framework to test both gaze estimation algorithms and head pose estimation methods. The authors would like to acknowledge the Spanish Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness for their support under Contracts TIN2014-52897-R and TIN2017-84388-R in the framework of the National Plan of I+D+i
SeTA: semiautomatic tool for annotation of eye tracking images
Availability of large scale tagged datasets is a must in the field of deep learning applied to the eye tracking challenge. In this paper, the potential of Supervised-Descent-Method (SDM) as a semiautomatic labelling tool for eye tracking images is shown. The objective of the paper is to evidence how the human effort needed for manually labelling large eye tracking datasets can be radically reduced by the use of cascaded regressors. Different applications are provided in the fields of high and low resolution systems. An iris/pupil center labelling is shown as example for low resolution images while a pupil contour points detection is demonstrated in high resolution. In both cases manual annotation requirements are drastically reduced.Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, contract TIN2017-84388-
Impact of atmospheric circulation patterns on coastal dune dynamics, NW Spain
Dunes in temperate latitudes have experienced a significant stabilization in recent times, essentially as a consequence of the expansion of dense vegetation
cover. Yet, the causes for this gradual stabilization as well as the causes promoting antecedent aeolian mobilization remain poorly understood. The Traba
coastal dune field, located in NW Spain, was examined to explore the causes inducing aeolian activity and subsequent stabilization since 1940. Morphological
changes were identified through the combination of aerial photographs and geophysical techniques. Local wind field regimes were simulated using a regional
climate model to obtain the variability of the most relevant modes of atmospheric circulation in the North Atlantic and European regions; North Atlantic
Oscillation (NAO), Eastern Atlantic (EA) and Scandinavian (SCAND). This allows us to identify the impact of these circulation modes over dune dynamics.
Results document an episode of aeolian activity during the 1950s followed by a gradual stabilization and fixation of the dune coincident with a decrease on
storm and wind intensity. Yet, aeolian sand movement remained active in small areas (blowouts), occurring mainly during the summer. NE winds associated
with a negative phase of the EA explain the movement of sand within the dune field under favorable conditions of sand supply. On the other hand, sand
supply to the dune field from the beach was promoted by NW winds coincident with the summer negative phase of NAO. During winter, the negative NAO
favored frequent SW winds associated with the passage of intense storms, which in turn explain sand remobilization from the beach making sediment
available for the NW winds to blow inland. With this work, it is proven that to understand past and future aeolian activity requires critical consideration of the
variability and impact of the two principal modes of atmospheric circulation in the North Atlantic (NAO and EA). The SCAND mode explaining a lower
percentage of the local wind field variability was also included to achieve higher significance levels of explained variance
Gaze estimation problem tackled through synthetic images
In this paper, we evaluate a synthetic framework to be used in the field of
gaze estimation employing deep learning techniques. The lack of sufficient
annotated data could be overcome by the utilization of a synthetic evaluation
framework as far as it resembles the behavior of a real scenario. In this work,
we use U2Eyes synthetic environment employing I2Head datataset as real
benchmark for comparison based on alternative training and testing strategies.
The results obtained show comparable average behavior between both frameworks
although significantly more robust and stable performance is retrieved by the
synthetic images. Additionally, the potential of synthetically pretrained
models in order to be applied in user's specific calibration strategies is
shown with outstanding performances.Comment: https://dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.1145/3379156.339136
Maximizing opportunities and minimizing risks for children online: the role of digital skills in emerging strategies of parental mediation
As internet use becomes widespread at home, parents are trying to maximize their children’s online opportunities while also minimizing online risks. We surveyed parents of 6- to 14-year-olds in eight European countries (N=6,400). A factor analysis revealed two strategies. Enabling mediation is associated with increased online opportunities but also risks. This strategy incorporates safety efforts, responds to child agency and is employed when parent or child is relatively digitally skilled, so may not support harm. Restrictive mediation is associated with fewer online risks but at the cost of opportunities, reflecting policy advice that regards media use as primarily problematic. It is favoured when parent or child digital skills are lower, potentially keeping vulnerable children safe yet undermining their digital inclusion
