    Electrical Surface Breakdown: Secondary Electron Emission and Electron Spectroscopy of Insulators

    These results question the usual scheme of flashover. They lead to a different interpretation based on classical concepts in solid state physics which can be verified at every step. An ionizing cascade in the bands, rather than a cascade of electron multiplication on the insulating surface, could explain the flashover, the conditioning and the deconditioning of high voltage generators through the building of a surface charge. As in the usual model the positive charge is responsible for the flashover, in this new model the building of this charge is the basis of the conditioning. The ionizing cascade in the bands is initiated by a tunnel injection into the insulator from the soldering metal-insulator junction or by electronic excitation. This interpretation is supported by the analysis of charging phenomena in insulators, the study of localization sites of carriers and by the neutralization mechanisms, charge diffusion or defect annealling. Two methods for spectrometer alignment are compared: the linearization method and the elastic peak test. Experimental spectra are presented, which can be considered as stringent reference data to check the instrument response and the analyser transmission at low energies

    Influence of Ion Implantation and Gas Exposure on the Charge in Silicon Oxide Created by Electronic Excitation

    Low energy electron bombardment of amorphous SiO2 induces point defects such as oxygen vacancy by electronic excitation. The defects build a macroscopic negative charge by trapping of electrons on the localized levels in the band gap; this phenomenon was previously described as the mirror effect. In the present paper, we investigate, by mirror effect, the behavior of the charge after an argon, nitrogen and oxygen implantation at 1 and 4 keV, and after exposure to the same gases at various low pressures. We observe a difference of behavior between Ar (or N2) and O2, The results reinforce the outstanding role of oxygen in the defect production in SiO2 by electronic excitation

    International audienceTouch screens rapidly and significantly replace physical keyboards on mobile devices. Hence, text entry is now dependent on software (or virtual) keyboards that are widely used by sighted people, but raise accessibility issues for visually impaired users. These users rely on tactile exploration with vocal feedback of the whole screen for entering text, which is time consuming. We designed a software keyboard that aims reducing tactile exploration and speeding up text entry for VI users. It relies on the selection of the first letter of a word and rapid and inaccurate typing of the remaining letters. It then proposes a list of words having the same first letter and a similar total distance between letters. The evaluation with twelve VI users showed that this keyboard is very efficient for words larger than five characters. It also helps preventing certain typing errors.L'utilisation des écrans tactiles et en particulier les claviers logiciels est extrêmement compliquée pour les non-voyants qui manquent de repères physiques sur ce type d'appareil. Nous proposons dans cet article une solution clavier logicielle qui propose une liste de mots pouvant correspondre au mot recherché à partir de frappes approximatives des utilisateurs non-voyants. Cette technique évite ainsi à l'utilisateur d'explorer le clavier en permanence pour trouver précisément les caractères à saisir. Une première évaluation nous permet de montrer que notre système est efficace pour les mots de plus de quatre caractères. Il permet aussi d'éviter certains types d'erreur de frappe.     L23VV Auger transition has been studied in Si, SiO2, Al, AlN, Al2O3 by electron spectroscopy excited either by electron beam or X Rays. A strong difference is observed in intensity between pure solid and oxide or nitride under electron bombardment. Auger intensity is very sensitive to changes in the backscattering coefficient or inelastic mean free path. However transient local trapping of electrons seems to be responsible for the large change observed

    The set up of an ion gun, producing a focused beam in the analysis chamber of a Scanning Auger Microscope permits ion scattering experiments: surface studies performed by electron spectroscopies can then be enlarged by Ion Scattering Spectroscopy (I.S.S.) to get additional information. I.S.S. appears to be very sensitive to the cleanliness of the surface: comparison between Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (E.E.L.S.) and I.S.S. studies on clean samples show that I.S.S. can still detect oxygen even when it is not detectable by E.E.L.S. Preliminary results on oxidation of Al (111) and Al (100) give oxidation curves in good agreement with those obtained by Auger Electron Spectroscopy (A.E.S.) and X Ray Photoemission Spectroscopy (X.P.S.)

    Study by Scanning Electron Microscopy and Electron Spectroscopy of the Cascade of Electron Multiplication in an Insulator Submitted to an Electric Field

    An original method for revealing the dielectric heterogeneities on an insulating surface has been developed on creation of an electron multiplication cascade inside the insulator placed in an electric field. The steps of the physical process are: (i) excitation of electrons into the conduction band, (ii) electric field acceleration of the conduction electrons, (iii) ionization of the valence levels, (iv) creation of many more new defects in the vicinity of dielectric heterogeneities, (v) charge localization on defects and appearance of a local residual potential. The potential map is observable by scanning electron microscopy after propagation of the ionizing cascade, but only during the first scan which smoothes the surface potential. By electron spectroscopy the energy of the secondary negative particles emitted during the cascade can be analysed

    AbstractThe coronavirus spike glycoprotein is a class I membrane fusion protein with two characteristic heptad repeat regions (HR1 and HR2) in its ectodomain. Here, we report the X-ray structure of a previously characterized HR1/HR2 complex of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus spike protein. As expected, the HR1 and HR2 segments are organized in antiparallel orientations within a rod-like molecule. The HR1 helices form an exceptionally long (120 Å) internal coiled coil stabilized by hydrophobic and polar interactions. A striking arrangement of conserved asparagine and glutamine residues of HR1 propagates from two central chloride ions, providing hydrogen-bonding “zippers” that strongly constrain the path of the HR2 main chain, forcing it to adopt an extended conformation at either end of a short HR2 α-helix

In the case of multi-component images, this problem is not trivial: the theoretical "naive" required memory space goes exponentially beyond todays technical capacities. To overcome this problem, we present a lossless compact representation of vector histograms. It is based on the use of a space filling curve to index the data space.     Validation and data characteristics of methane and nitrous oxide profiles observed by MIPAS and processed with Version 4.61 algorithm

    The ENVISAT validation programme for the atmospheric instruments MIPAS, SCIAMACHY and GOMOS is based on a number of balloon-borne, aircraft, satellite and ground-based correlative measurements. In particular the activities of validation scientists were coordinated by ESA within the ENVISAT Stratospheric Aircraft and Balloon Campaign or ESABC. As part of a series of similar papers on other species [this issue] and in parallel to the contribution of the individual validation teams, the present paper provides a synthesis of comparisons performed between MIPAS CH4 and N2O profiles produced by the current ESA operational software (Instrument Processing Facility version 4.61 or IPF v4.61, full resolution MIPAS data covering the period 9 July 2002 to 26 March 2004) and correlative measurements obtained from balloon and aircraft experiments as well as from satellite sensors or from ground-based instruments. In the middle stratosphere, no significant bias is observed between MIPAS and correlative measurements, and MIPAS is providing a very consistent and global picture of the distribution of CH4 and N2O in this region. In average, the MIPAS CH4 values show a small positive bias in the lower stratosphere of about 5%. A similar situation is observed for N2O with a positive bias of 4%. In the lower stratosphere/upper troposphere (UT/LS) the individual used MIPAS data version 4.61 still exhibits some unphysical oscillations in individual CH4 and N2O profiles caused by the processing algorithm (with almost no regularization). Taking these problems into account, the MIPAS CH4 and N2O profiles are behaving as expected from the internal error estimation of IPF v4.61 and the estimated errors of the correlative measurements
