    Mexican journals of educational research towards mainstream dissemination of science

    The purpose of this study is to analyze the Electronic Journal of Educational Research (REDIE) on its path towards the common manner of scientific dissemination. This research presents the evolution of Mexican policy with regards to the journals, the situation of the Educational Research Mexican journals, and its profundity relating to REDIE. In its evolution, there were three moments that stood out the most: the standardization of quality criteria, the digitalization and open access of the scientific journals, those that came together with REDIE like REDALYC and LATINDEX , and the individual initiatives of those journals that motivated the development of the scientific dissemination in Mexico. The investigation concludes with the realization of the necessity of achieving agreement on the efforts of various principal actors: governmental bodies, institutions, and academic communities

    La visibilidad de la Revista Electrónica de Investigación Educativa a través de la cibermetría

    El presente artículo expone un análisis de la visibilidad de la Revista Electrónica de Investigación Educativa en sus primeros once años de vida (1999-2010). La metodología de corte cuantitativo se apoya en el análisis de indicadores bibliométricos y cibermétricos para evaluar dos puntos fundamentales en la publicación: la comunicación interna generada a partir de sus autores y la comunicación externa establecida por los usuarios (lectores). El resultado del trabajo identifica el género, nacionalidad, grado académico e institución de adscripción de 411 autores; asimismo, distingue los países desde donde se consulta la revista, el origen de la conexión, las palabras clave empleadas en la búsqueda, el número de descargas de artículos en versión de documento portátil (PDF, por sus siglas en inglés) y el total de visitantes únicos por mes y año.     Cybercafés as constellations of social practices: Exploring “place” and “technospace” in cybercafés in México

    The term cybercafé has been widely used to refer to social spaces designed to provide access to computers and the internet. Described as a type of technospace where technology and human interaction are closely intertwined, cybercafés assume many designs and undertake different functions in society. Current literature on cybercafés in developing countries addresses mainly issues of access to the internet (the digital divide), the role of intermediaries and the learning that takes place. We complement these works by analyzing the different practices performed in three cybercafés in Mexico. Our empirical data is drawn from participant observations and interviews with customers and the staff of the cybercafés observed. Drawing from the New Mobilities Paradigm, our analysis explores the flows people, objects and networks in each place. Additionally, we consider the transformations experienced at these places and suggest that these changes respond to a mixed business model as well as to the intersection of particular objects, trajectories and situations that coalesced at different moments in these cybercafés. We argue that cybercafés are continually evolving and finding new ways to survive as technospaces where consumers find various forms of technology, goods and resources, and where interesting ways of social interactions are taking place
