Cascading nonlinearities in an organic single crystal core fiber: The Cerenkov regime

    Get PDF
The large nonlinear phase shifts imparted to the fundamental beam during Cerenkov second harmonic generation (SHG) in a DAN, 4-(N,N-dimethylamino)-3-acetamidonitrobenzene, single crystal core fiber are explained and modelled numerically. Cascading upconversion and downconversion processes leads to nonlinear phase shifts produced by the second order nonlinear coupling of the guided fundamental mode and the component of the Cerenkov second harmonic field trapped in the fiber cladding

Impact of Short-Term Variations in the Generation Output of Geographically Dispersed PV Systems

When viewed in hourly intervals, a solar photovoltaic (PV) system appears to have a more stable output than usual. However, there are short-term rapid variations in its generation output that result from transient cloudiness and weather disturbances in the atmosphere. By using Monte Carlo simulations applied to a Markov model, this study demonstrates the short-term intermittency of the transient weather conditions and estimates the generation of geographically dispersed PV systems with a capacity of ten percent of peak demand of a statewide grid in one-minute intervals. This study found that geographically distributed PV systems evaluated in one-minute intervals could cope with peaks of a statewide power grid because of the smoothing effect caused by the geographical spread. The purpose of the exercise is to create a framework for integration and optimization of multiple generation sources in order to meet the uncertainty of the fast changing PV output under certain weather conditions.

Are conductance plateaus independent events in atomic point contact measurements ? A statistical approach

Room temperature conductance-elongation curves of gold atomic wires are measured using a Scanning Tunnelling Microscope Break Junction technique. Landauer's conductance plateaus are individually identified and statistically analysed. Both the probabilities to observe, and the lengths of the two last plateaus (at conductance values close to 2e2/h and 4e2/h) are studied. All results converge to show that the occurrence of these two conductance plateaus on a conductance-elongation curve are statistically independent events.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures. We have identified cascading of second-order nonlinear processes as the origin of previously reported, very large nonlinearities measured by self-phase-modulation experiments in organic single-crystal-core fibers of 4-(N, N-dimethylamino)-3-acetamidonitrobenzene. © 1994 Optical Society of America

Often times, only partial information is available: installation date and amount, as well as failure and replacement rates. By combining sufficiently large number of yearly populations of the components, estimation of model parameters may be possible. The parametric models may then be used for forecasting of the system’s short term future failure and for formulation of replacement strategies. We employ the Weibull distribution and show how we estimate its parameters from past failure data. Using Monte Carlo simulations, it is possible to assess confidence ranges of the forecasted component performance data

NULTO STANJE KVALITETA VAZDUHA U PODRUČJU KORIDORA Vc

Ključne riječi: koridor Vc, zagađenje vazduha, nulto stanjeABSTRACT    Corridor Vc is part of the European land corridor network which represents connection with the Adriatic Sea, and it goes from Budapest through Osijek and Sarajevo, all the way to the port Ploče in Croatia. It passes through the center of Bosnia and Herzegovina and its length is 330 km.Before starting the construction, it is necesarry to estimate the air pollution condition, i.e. zero state, to obtain the realistic picture about the impact of traffic to the air quality during the exploitation of highway. This paper presents the results of air polution measurements which will be the base for the further air quality estimation, when the highway becomes operational.Key words: corridor Vc, air pollution, zero stat
