    The influence of religion and gender on physician and nurse HPV immunization recommendations in Newfoundland and Labrador

    Human papillomavirus (HPV) can have serious consequences for all genders. Despite these risks, Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) has failed to include all individuals in the provincially funded HPV vaccination program. The purpose of this instrumental case study was to assess physicians’ and nurses’ intentions to recommend the HPV vaccine for male youth through the lenses gender and religion, and to use that information to strengthen their intentions to recommend. Data were collected using surveys and individual interviews and analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic coding. Findings were framed using the Theory of Planned Behaviour and revealed that there is an imbalance in HPV recommendations across genders, that sexual health is viewed primarily the responsibility of females, and that trans and non-female identifying individuals are systematically marginalized by the current policy. These findings have implications for policy and can raise the awareness of practitioners about systemic barriers to recommending the vaccine

    How stigma impacts on people with psychosis: The mediating effect of self-esteem and hopelessness on subjective recovery and psychotic experiences

    This study aimed to examine how stigma impacts on symptomatic and subjective recovery from psychosis, both concurrently and longitudinally. We also aimed to investigate whether self-esteem and hopelessness mediated the observed associations between stigma and outcomes. 80 service-users with psychosis completed symptom (Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale) and subjective recovery measures (Process of Recovery Questionnaire) at baseline and 6-months later, and also completed the King Stigma Scale, the Self-Esteem Rating Scale and the Beck Hopelessness Scale at baseline. In cross sectional regression and multiple mediation analyses of the baseline data, we found that stigma predicted both symptomatic and subjective recovery, and the effects of stigma on these outcomes were mediated by hopelessness and self-esteem. When the follow-up data were examined, stigma at baseline continued to predict recovery judgements and symptoms. However, self-esteem only mediated the effect of stigma on PANSS passive social withdrawal. Self-esteem and hopelessness should be considered in interventions to reduce the effects of stigma. Interventions that address the current and long-term effects of stigma may positively affect outcome for people being treated for psychosis

    Breaking the Smallsat Barriers to Sub-50cm Imaging

    New cutting-edge imaging sensors can now reduce instrument size and mass, leading to mission cost savings, and bring sub-50cm imaging capability into the realm of small satellites. Whilst aperture is essential to achieving resolution, half-pixel shifted sensor architectures decouple achievable Ground Sampling Distance (GSD) from the native ground projected pixel. This facilitates the deployment of Very High Resolution (VHR) small satellite constellations featuring improved Signal-to-Noise performance and increased area collection rates compared to push-frame systems. A fundamental limitation to the theoretical performance of an optical system is imposed by its aperture diameter; hence, for a given aperture, the aim is to maximize the information content resolved up to this limit. This is achieved by minimizing losses caused by aberrations in the optical system and enhancing platform stability on-orbit. Further information is lost due to aliasing at higher spatial frequencies; however, the recovery of such information is unlocked through the novel sensor technology and processing techniques proposed.     The Host Galaxy and Redshift of the Repeating Fast Radio Burst FRB 121102

    The precise localization of the repeating fast radio burst (FRB 121102) has provided the first unambiguous association (chance coincidence probability p3×104p\lesssim3\times10^{-4}) of an FRB with an optical and persistent radio counterpart. We report on optical imaging and spectroscopy of the counterpart and find that it is an extended (0.60.80.6^{\prime\prime}-0.8^{\prime\prime}) object displaying prominent Balmer and [OIII] emission lines. Based on the spectrum and emission line ratios, we classify the counterpart as a low-metallicity, star-forming, mr=25.1m_{r^\prime} = 25.1 AB mag dwarf galaxy at a redshift of z=0.19273(8)z=0.19273(8), corresponding to a luminosity distance of 972 Mpc. From the angular size, the redshift, and luminosity, we estimate the host galaxy to have a diameter 4\lesssim4 kpc and a stellar mass of M47×107MM_*\sim4-7\times 10^{7}\,M_\odot, assuming a mass-to-light ratio between 2 to 3ML1\,M_\odot\,L_\odot^{-1}. Based on the Hα\alpha flux, we estimate the star formation rate of the host to be 0.4Myr10.4\,M_\odot\,\mathrm{yr^{-1}} and a substantial host dispersion measure depth 324pccm3\lesssim 324\,\mathrm{pc\,cm^{-3}}. The net dispersion measure contribution of the host galaxy to FRB 121102 is likely to be lower than this value depending on geometrical factors. We show that the persistent radio source at FRB 121102's location reported by Marcote et al (2017) is offset from the galaxy's center of light by \sim200 mas and the host galaxy does not show optical signatures for AGN activity. If FRB 121102 is typical of the wider FRB population and if future interferometric localizations preferentially find them in dwarf galaxies with low metallicities and prominent emission lines, they would share such a preference with long gamma ray bursts and superluminous supernovae.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, Published in ApJ Letters.     Thermal imaging is a non-invasive alternative to PET-CT for measurement of brown adipose tissue activity in humans

    Background Obesity and its metabolic consequences are a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Brown adipose tissue (BAT) utilises glucose and free fatty acids to produce heat, thereby increasing energy expenditure. Effective evaluation of human BAT stimulators is constrained by current standard BAT assessment methods as positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) requires exposure to high doses of ionising radiation. Infrared thermography (IRT) is a potential non-invasive, safe alternative, although direct corroboration with PET-CT has not previously been established. Methods IRT and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (¹⁸F-FDG) PET-CT data from 8 healthy male participants subjected to water jacket cooling were directly compared. Thermal images (TIs) were geometrically transformed to overlay PET-CT-derived maximum intensity projection (MIP) images from each subject and the areas of greatest intensity of temperature and glucose-uptake within the supraclavicular regions compared. Relationships between supraclavicular temperatures from IRT (TSCR) and the maximum rate of glucose uptake (MR(gluc)) from PET-CT were determined. Results Glucose uptake on MR(gluc)MIP was positively correlated with change in TSCR relative to a reference region (r² = 0.721; p=0.008). Spatial overlap between areas of maximal MR(gluc)MIP and maximal TSCR was 29.5±5.1%. Prolonged cooling to 60 minutes was associated with further TSCR rise compared with cooling to 10 minutes. Conclusions The supraclavicular hotspot identified on IRT closely corresponds to the area of maximal uptake on PET-CT-derived MR(gluc)MIP images. Greater increases in relative TSCR were associated with raised glucose uptake. IRT should now be considered a suitable method for measuring BAT activation, especially in populations where PET-CT is not feasible, practical or repeatable
