    Modeling Agglomeration of Dust Particles in Plasma

    The charge on an aggregate immersed in a plasma environment distributes itself over the aggregate's surface; this can be approximated theoretically by assuming a multipole distribution. The dipole-dipole (or higher order) charge interactions between fractal aggregates lead to rotations of the grains as they interact. Other properties of the dust grains also influence the agglomeration process, such as the monomer shape (spherical or ellipsoidal) or the presence of magnetic material. Finally, the plasma and grain properties also determine the morphology of the resultant aggregates. Porous and fluffy aggregates are more strongly coupled to the gas, leading to reduced collisional velocities, and greater collisional cross sections. These factors in turn can determine the growth rate of the aggregates and evolution of the dust cloud. This paper gives an overview of the numerical and experimental methods used to study dust agglomeration at CASPER and highlights some recent results

    Sequential phosphorylation of adjacent serine residues on the N-terminal region of cardiac troponin-I: structure-activity implications of ordered phosphorylation

    AbstractWe have used NMR spectroscopy to monitor the phosphorylation of a peptide corresponding to the N-terminal region of human cardiac troponin-I (residues 17–30), encompassing the two adjacent serine residues of the dual phosphorylation site. An ordered incorporation of phosphate catalysed by PKA was observed, with phosphorylation of Ser-24 preceding that of Ser-23. Diphosphorylation induced a conformational transition in this region, involving the specific association of the Arg-22 and Ser-24P side-chains, and maximally stabilised when both phosphoserines were in the di-anionic form. The results suggest that the second phosphorylation at Ser-23 of cardiac troponin-I is of particular significance in the mechanism by which adrenaline regulates the calcium sensitivity of the myofibrillar actomyosin Mg-ATPase

    Analysis of TiN by charged particle beams: Nuclear reaction analysis, nuclear reaction broadening and Rutherford backscattering

    Charged particle beams have been used to extract data both on the composition and also on the thickness of two series of TiNx films (about 5 and 2 [mu]m thick respectively), where x varied from 0.3 to 1.0. The technique used were nuclear reaction analysis (NRA), resonance nuclear reaction broadening (NRB) and Rutherford backscattering, together with Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). The data from the NRB depth profiles scale remarkably well with the results from AES. The NRA results have the greatest experimental uncertainty and also indicate a systematic error which is not understood. Both NRA and NRB can return reliable film thickness data.     Kepler-432: a red giant interacting with one of its two long period giant planets

    We report the discovery of Kepler-432b, a giant planet (Mb=5.410.18+0.32MJup,Rb=1.1450.039+0.036RJupM_b = 5.41^{+0.32}_{-0.18} M_{\rm Jup}, R_b = 1.145^{+0.036}_{-0.039} R_{\rm Jup}) transiting an evolved star (M=1.320.07+0.10M,R=4.060.08+0.12R)(M_\star = 1.32^{+0.10}_{-0.07} M_\odot, R_\star = 4.06^{+0.12}_{-0.08} R_\odot) with an orbital period of Pb=52.5011290.000053+0.000067P_b = 52.501129^{+0.000067}_{-0.000053} days. Radial velocities (RVs) reveal that Kepler-432b orbits its parent star with an eccentricity of e=0.51340.0089+0.0098e = 0.5134^{+0.0098}_{-0.0089}, which we also measure independently with asterodensity profiling (AP; e=0.5070.114+0.039e=0.507^{+0.039}_{-0.114}), thereby confirming the validity of AP on this particular evolved star. The well-determined planetary properties and unusually large mass also make this planet an important benchmark for theoretical models of super-Jupiter formation. Long-term RV monitoring detected the presence of a non-transiting outer planet (Kepler-432c; Mcsinic=2.430.24+0.22MJup,Pc=406.22.5+3.9M_c \sin{i_c} = 2.43^{+0.22}_{-0.24} M_{\rm Jup}, P_c = 406.2^{+3.9}_{-2.5} days), and adaptive optics imaging revealed a nearby (0\farcs87), faint companion (Kepler-432B) that is a physically bound M dwarf. The host star exhibits high signal-to-noise asteroseismic oscillations, which enable precise measurements of the stellar mass, radius and age. Analysis of the rotational splitting of the oscillation modes additionally reveals the stellar spin axis to be nearly edge-on, which suggests that the stellar spin is likely well-aligned with the orbit of the transiting planet. Despite its long period, the obliquity of the 52.5-day orbit may have been shaped by star-planet interaction in a manner similar to hot Jupiter systems, and we present observational and theoretical evidence to support this scenario. Finally, as a short-period outlier among giant planets orbiting giant stars, study of Kepler-432b may help explain the distribution of massive planets orbiting giant stars interior to 1 AU.Comment: 22 pages, 19 figures, 5 tables.     Uncovering treatment burden as a key concept for stroke care: a systematic review of qualitative research

    <b>Background</b> Patients with chronic disease may experience complicated management plans requiring significant personal investment. This has been termed ‘treatment burden’ and has been associated with unfavourable outcomes. The aim of this systematic review is to examine the qualitative literature on treatment burden in stroke from the patient perspective.<p></p> <b>Methods and findings</b> The search strategy centred on: stroke, treatment burden, patient experience, and qualitative methods. We searched: Scopus, CINAHL, Embase, Medline, and PsycINFO. We tracked references, footnotes, and citations. Restrictions included: English language, date of publication January 2000 until February 2013. Two reviewers independently carried out the following: paper screening, data extraction, and data analysis. Data were analysed using framework synthesis, as informed by Normalization Process Theory. Sixty-nine papers were included. Treatment burden includes: (1) making sense of stroke management and planning care, (2) interacting with others, (3) enacting management strategies, and (4) reflecting on management. Health care is fragmented, with poor communication between patient and health care providers. Patients report inadequate information provision. Inpatient care is unsatisfactory, with a perceived lack of empathy from professionals and a shortage of stimulating activities on the ward. Discharge services are poorly coordinated, and accessing health and social care in the community is difficult. The study has potential limitations because it was restricted to studies published in English only and data from low-income countries were scarce.<p></p> <b>Conclusions</b> Stroke management is extremely demanding for patients, and treatment burden is influenced by micro and macro organisation of health services. Knowledge deficits mean patients are ill equipped to organise their care and develop coping strategies, making adherence less likely. There is a need to transform the approach to care provision so that services are configured to prioritise patient needs rather than those of health care systems

    Health equity issues at the local level: Socio-geography, access, and health outcomes in the service area of the Hôpital Albert Schweitzer-Haiti

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Although health equity issues at regional, national and international levels are receiving increasing attention, health equity issues at the local level have been virtually overlooked. Here, we describe here a comprehensive equity assessment carried out by the Hôpital Albert Schweitzer-Haiti (HAS) in 2003. HAS has been operating health and development programs in the Artibonite Valley of Haiti for 50 years.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We reviewed all available information arising from a comprehensive evaluation of the programs of HAS carried out in 1999 and 2000. As part of this evaluation, two demographic and health surveys were carried out. We carried out exit interviews with clients receiving primary health care, observations within health facilities, interviews with households related to quality of care, and focus group discussions with community-based health workers. A special study was carried out in 2003 to assess factors determining the use of prenatal care services. Finally, selected findings were obtained from the HAS information system.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We found markedly reduced access to health services in the peripheral mountainous areas compared to the central plains. The quality of services was more deficient and the coverage of key services was lower in the mountains. Finally, health status, as measured by under-five mortality rates and levels of childhood malnutrition, was also worse in the mountains.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These findings indicate that local health programs need to give attention to monitoring the health status as well as the quality and coverage of basic services among marginalized groups within the program service area. Health inequities will not be overcome until such monitoring occurs and leaders of health programs ensure that inequities identified are addressed in the local programming of activities. It is quite likely that, within relatively small geographic areas in resource-poor settings around the world, similar, if not even greater, levels of health inequities exist. These inequities need to be measured and addressed in order for health programs to achieve equity and maximum improvement in health status within the population.</p

    A survey that can cover the sky in optical bands over wide fields to faint magnitudes with a fast cadence will enable many of the exciting science opportunities of the next decade. The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will have an effective aperture of 6.7 meters and an imaging camera with field of view of 9.6 deg^2, and will be devoted to a ten-year imaging survey over 20,000 deg^2 south of +15 deg. Each pointing will be imaged 2000 times with fifteen second exposures in six broad bands from 0.35 to 1.1 microns, to a total point-source depth of r~27.5. The LSST Science Book describes the basic parameters of the LSST hardware, software, and observing plans. The book discusses educational and outreach opportunities, then goes on to describe a broad range of science that LSST will revolutionize: mapping the inner and outer Solar System, stellar populations in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies, the structure of the Milky Way disk and halo and other objects in the Local Volume, transient and variable objects both at low and high redshift, and the properties of normal and active galaxies at low and high redshift. It then turns to far-field cosmological topics, exploring properties of supernovae to z~1, strong and weak lensing, the large-scale distribution of galaxies and baryon oscillations, and how these different probes may be combined to constrain cosmological models and the physics of dark energy.Comment: 596 pages.     Systemic multilineage engraftment in mice after in utero transplantation with human hematopoietic stem cells

    In utero hematopoietic cell transplantation (IUHCT) is a potential therapy for the treatment of numerous genetic diseases such as hemoglobinopathies, immunodeficiencies, and inborn errors of metabolism.1 In utero therapy offers the benefit of avoiding host myeloablation and immunosuppression and has been shown to be successful in multiple animal models, including mice,2-5 dogs,6,7 pigs,8,9 and sheep.10-12 The timing of IUHCT exposes the transplanted human cells to the normal fetal migratory and developmental cues that facilitate proper stem cell distribution and differentiation.11,12 Clinically, IUHCT has been successful for fetuses with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID),13,14 but therapeutic uses for other diseases, including hemoglobinopathies, have seen limited success.15 Further investigations identified multiple barriers to successful engraftment, including lack of space within the hematopoietic niche16,17 and the maternal immune system.2,18 Among available animal models of IUHCT, the fetal mouse remains an efficient and reproducible model to study the differentiation of stem cells in a nonirradiated host. NSG (NOD-SCID IL2Rg-null) mice, which are developed with SCID and IL-2Rg-null chain mutations, are a robust platform for the engraftment of human hematopoietic cells because they have no endogenous T, B, or natural killer cells.19-22 In this study, we used IUHCT of human CD341 cells in NSG mice to create a reproducible mouse model to study stem cell engraftment, differentiation, and systemic repopulation after IUHCT
