On the heating of source of the Orion KL hot core
We present images of the J=10-9 rotational lines of HC3N in the vibrationally
excited levels 1v7, 1v6 and 1v5 of the hot core (HC) in Orion KL. The images
show that the spatial distribution and the size emission from the 1v7 and 1v5
levels are different. While the J=10-9 1v7 line has a size of 4''x 6'' and
peaks 1.1'' NE of the 3 mm continuum peak, the J=10--9 1v5 line emission is
unresolved (<3'') and peaks 1.3'' south of the 3 mm peak. This is a clear
indication that the HC is composed of condensations with very different
temperatures (170 K for the 1v7 peak and K for the 1v5 peak). The
temperature derived from the 1v7 and 1v5 lines increases with the projected
distance to the suspected main heating source I. Projection effects along the
line of sight could explain the temperature gradient as produced by source I.
However, the large luminosity required for source I, >5 10^5 Lsolar, to explain
the 1v5 line suggests that external heating by this source may not dominate the
heating of the HC. Simple model calculations of the vibrationally excited
emission indicate that the HC can be internally heated by a source with a
luminosity of 10^5 Lsolar, located 1.2'' SW of the 1v5 line peak (1.8'' south
of source I). We also report the first detection of high-velocity gas from
vibrationally excited HC3N emission. Based on excitation arguments we conclude
that the main heating source is also driving the molecular outflow. We
speculate that all the data presented in this letter and the IR images are
consistent with a young massive protostar embedded in an edge-on disk.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, To be published in Ap.J. Letter
Fusarium wilt of banana by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense tropical race 4: contingency planning, best farm biosecurity practices for prevention and capacity building in Latin America & Caribbean.
Banana world production (2015) was133.7 million ton and is the most important fruit commodity representing a gross value of 45 billion USD. Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) produce 24 % of the banana world production and 64% of this production are locally consumed, representing food security and livelihoods for millions people. Seven countries of the region belong to the top-10 exporting nations. Fusarium wilt (FW) caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense tropical race 4 (Foc TR4) is a major threat for this crop. Current increment of movement of persons, commodities and germplasm, increase risks of transboundary movement of pests putting under press exotic pest surveillance. Measures implementation to prevent introduction and dissemination of diseases should be a shared responsibility between National Plant Protection Organizations (NPPO) and growers. Most important defense line to reduce the threat imposed by Foc TR4 are developing and implementation of contingency plans and basic farm biosecurity procedures to prevent introductions. This report review FW dispersal ways and the best practices to prevent its introduction to production sites. Contingency plans bring scientific, organizational and regulatory bases of actions to implement by NPPO for opportune management (identification, diagnostic, eradication-confining, suppression-contention-management, financial and logistic resources) of an eventual outbreak of FocTR4 in region. Farm biosecurity practices are simple basic measures addressed to reduce risks of exotic pathogen introductions to production sites: a) Workers and public awareness. B) Persons and equipment decontamination at entry/exit of farms. C) Limitation of access of persons, transport and equipment to and among fields. D) Use of certified healthy planting material. E) Enhance of soil disease suppressiveness. F) Frequent surveillance of disease. G) Immediate report of unusual situations. Early Life Programming of Abdominal Adiposity in Adolescents: The HELENA Study
OBJECTIVE:
To examine the relationship between birth weight and abdominal adiposity in adolescents.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS:
A total of 284 adolescents (49.3% of whom were female) aged 14.9 +/- 1.2 years were included in the study. Birth weight and gestational age were obtained from parental records. Abdominal adiposity (in three regions: R1, R2, and R3) and trunk and total body fat mass were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Regional fat mass indexes (FMIs) were thereafter calculated as fat mass divided by the square of height (Trunk FMI and abdominal FMI R1, R2, and R3).
RESULTS:
Birth weight was negatively associated with abdominal FMI R1, R2, and R3 independently of total fat mass, gestational age, sex, breast-feeding duration, pubertal stage, physical activity, and socioeconomic status (all P < 0.01).
CONCLUSIONS:
Our study shows an inverse association between birth weight and abdominal adiposity in adolescents independently of total fat mass and other potential confounders. These findings suggest that fetal nutrition, as reflected by birth weight, may have a programming effect on abdominal adiposity later in life.The HELENA study was carried out with the financial support of the European Community Sixth RTD Framework Programme (contract no. Melt processability, characterization, and antibacterial activity of compression-molded green composite sheets made of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) reinforced with coconut fibers impregnated with oregano essential oil
New packaging materials based on green composite sheets consisting of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) and coconut fibers (CFs) were obtained by twin-screw extrusion (TSE) followed by compression molding. The effect of varying the CF weight content, i.e. 1, 3, 5, and 10wt.-%, and the screw speed during melt processing, i.e. 75, 150, and 225rpm, on both the aspect ratio and dispersion of the fibers was analyzed and related to the properties of the compression-molded sheets. Finally, the CFs were impregnated with oregano essential oil (OEO) by an innovative spray coating methodology and then incorporated into PHBV at the optimal processing conditions. The functionalized green composite sheets presented bacteriostatic effect against Staphylococcus aureus from fiber contents as low as 3wt.-%. Effects of the MY34/2018 Global Dust Storm as Measured by MSL REMS in Gale Crater
The Rover Environmental Monitoring Station (REMS) instrument is on board NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Curiosity rover. REMS has been measuring surface pressure, air, and ground brightness temperature, relative humidity, and ultraviolet (UV) irradiance since MSL’s landing in 2012. In Mars Year (MY) 34 (2018) a global dust storm reached Gale Crater at Ls ~ 190°. REMS offers a unique opportunity to better understand the impact of a global dust storm on local environmental conditions, which complements previous observations by the Viking landers and Mars Exploration Rovers. All atmospheric variables measured by REMS are strongly affected albeit at different times. During the onset phase, the daily maximum UV radiation decreased by 90% between sols 2075 (opacity ~1) and 2085 (opacity ~8.5). The diurnal range in ground and air temperatures decreased by 35 and 56 K, respectively, with also a diurnal-average decrease of ~2 and 4 K respectively. The maximum relative humidity, which occurs right before sunrise, decreased to below 5%, compared with prestorm values of up to 29%, due to the warmer air temperatures at night, while the inferred water vapor abundance suggests an increase during the storm. Between sols 2085 and 2130, the typical nighttime stable inversion layer was absent near the surface as ground temperatures remained warmer than near-surface air temperatures. Antimicrobial Peptides Pom-1 and Pom-2 from Pomacea poeyana Are Active against Candida auris, C. parapsilosis and C. albicans Biofilms
Recently two peptides isolated from the Cuban freshwater snail Pomacea poeyana (Pilsbry, 1927) were described to have antimicrobial activity against bacterial pathogens. Here we show considerable activities of Pom-1 and Pom-2 to reduce the viability of C. albicans, C. parapsilosis and the less common species C. auris measured as the decrease of metabolic activity in the resazurin reduction assay for planktonic cells. Although these activities were low, Pom-1 and Pom-2 turned out to be highly potent inhibitors of biofilm formation for the three Candida species tested. Whereas Pom-1 was slightly more active against C. albicans and C. parapsilosis as representatives of the more common Candida species Pom-2 showed no preference and was fully active also against biofilms of the more uncommon species C. auris. Pom-1 and Pom-2 may represent promising lead structures for the development of a classical peptide optimization strategy with the realistic aim to further increase antibiofilm properties and other pharmacologic parameters and to generate finally the first antifungal drug with a pronounced dedication against Candida biofilms
"Fat but powerful'' paradox: association of muscle power and adiposity markers with all-cause mortality in older adults from the EXERNET multicentre study
Objectives: To assess the influence of muscle power and adiposity on all-cause mortality risk and to evaluate the fat but powerful'' (F+P) (or fat but fit'') paradox in older adults. Methods: A total of 2563 older adults (65 €''91 years old) from the EXERNET multicentre study were included. Adiposity (body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, body fat percentage (BF%) and fat index), allometric and relative power (sit-to-stand muscle power test) and various covariates (age, sex, hypertension, smoking status and walking and sitting times per day) were registered at baseline. All-cause mortality was recorded during a median follow-up of 8.9 years. Participants were classified into four groups: lean and powerful (L+P), F+P, lean but weak and fat and weak (F+W). Cox proportional hazard regression models and adjusted HRs were calculated. Results: According to BMI and waist circumference, all-cause mortality risk was reduced in the F+P (HR=0.55 and 0.63, p=0.044 and 0.049, respectively) and L+P (HR=0.57 and 0.58, p=0.043 and 0.025, respectively) groups. According to BF%, all-cause mortality decreased in the L+P group (HR=0.53; p=0.021), and a trend for a reduction was reported in the F+P group (HR=0.57; p=0.060). According to fat index, a survival benefit was only noted in the L+P group (HR=0.50; p=0.049). Higher levels of relative power reduced all-cause mortality risk among older people (HR=0.63 and 0.53, p=0.006 and 0.011, respectively). Conclusion: Powerful older people exhibited a reduced 9-year all-cause mortality regardless of BMI, waist circumference and BF%.
