Study of Spin and Decay-Plane Correlations of W Bosons in the e+e- -> W+W- Process at LEP
Data collected at LEP at centre-of-mass energies \sqrt(s) = 189 - 209 GeV are
used to study correlations of the spin of W bosons using e+e- -> W+W- -> lnqq~
events. Spin correlations are favoured by data, and found to agree with the
Standard Model predictions. In addition, correlations between the W-boson decay
planes are studied in e+e- -> W+W- -> lnqq~ and e+e- -> W+W- -> qq~qq~ events.
Decay-plane correlations, consistent with zero and with the Standard Model
predictions, are measured
Ultrarelativistic sources in nonlinear electrodynamics
The fields of rapidly moving sources are studied within nonlinear
electrodynamics by boosting the fields of sources at rest. As a consequence of
the ultrarelativistic limit the delta-like electromagnetic shock waves are
found. The character of the field within the shock depends on the theory of
nonlinear electrodynamics considered. In particular, we obtain the field of an
ultrarelativistic charge in the Born-Infeld theory.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
Measurement of the Cross Section for Open-Beauty Production in Photon-Photon Collisions at LEP
The cross section for open-beauty production in photon-photon collisions is
measured using the whole high-energy and high-luminosity data sample collected
by the L3 detector at LEP. This corresponds to 627/pb of integrated luminosity
for electron-positron centre-of-mass energies from 189GeV to 209GeV. Events
containing b quarks are identified through their semi-leptonic decay into
electrons or muons. The e+e- -> e+e-b b~X cross section is measured within our
fiducial volume and then extrapolated to the full phase space. These results
are found to be in significant excess with respect to Monte Carlo predictions
and next-to-leading order QCD calculations
Search for R-parity Violating Decays of Supersymmetric Particles in e+e- Collisions at root(s)= 189 GeV
A search for chargino, neutralino and scalar lepton pair-production in e+e- collisions at the centre-of-mass energy of 189 GeV is performed under the assumptions that R-parity is not conserved in decays and only one of the coupling constants lambda_ijk, lambda'_ijk or lambda''_ijk is non-negligible. No signal is found in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 176.4 pb-1. Limits on the production cross sections, on the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model parameters and on the masses of the supersymmetric particles are derived
A search for flaring Very-High-Energy cosmic-ray sources with the L3+C muon spectrometer
The L3+C muon detector at the Cern electron-position collider, LEP, is used for the detection of very-high-energy cosmic \gamma-ray sources through the observation of muons of energies above 20, 30, 50 and 100 GeV. Daily or monthly excesses in the rate of single-muon events pointing to some particular direction in the sky are searched for. The periods from mid July to November 1999, and April to November 2000 are considered. Special attention is also given to a selection of known \gamma-ray sources. No statistically significant excess is observed for any direction or any particular source
Search for charged Higgs bosons in collisions at centre-of-mass energies between 130 and 183 GeV
A search for pair-produced charged Higgs bosons is performed with the L3 detector at LEP using data collected at centre-of-mass energies from \mbox{130 to 183 \GeV{}}, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 88.3 \pb. The Higgs decays into a charm and a strange quark or into a tau lepton and its associated neutrino are considered. The observed candidates are consistent with the expectations from Standard Model background processes. A lower limit of 57.5 \GeV{} on the charged Higgs mass is derived at 95\% CL, independent of the decay branching ratio \mathrm{Br(H^\pm\ra \tau\nu)}
Inclusive Charm Production in Two-Photon Collisions at LEP
The cross section of charm production in collisions is measured at LEP with the L3 detector at centre of mass energies from 91 GeV to 183 GeV. Charmed hadrons are identified by electrons and muons from semi-leptonic decays. The direct process is found to be insufficient to describe the data. The measured cross section values and event distributions require contributions from resolved processes, which are sensitive to the gluon density in the photon
QCD results from studies of hadronic events produced in annihilations at = 183 GeV
We present results obtained from a study of the structure of hadronic events recorded by the L3 detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 55.3 . % collected during the high energy run of 1997. The distributions of event shape variables and the energy dependence of their mean values are measured. From a comparison with resummed $\cal{O
Heavy Quarkonium Production in Z Decays
We report measurements of the inclusive production of heavy quarkonium states in decays based on the analysis of 3.6 million hadronic events collected by the L3 detector at LEP. The measurement of inclusive J production and an improved confidence level upper limit on production are presented. In addition, two independent measurements of the ratio, , of prompt J mesons to those from B decay are made using two different isolation cuts to separate prompt J mesons from J mesons produced in the decays of b hadrons. The results are: % \begin{eqnarray} \mathrm{Br}(\mathrm{Z} \rightarrow \mathrm{J} + \mathrm{X}) & = & (3.21 \pm 0.21 \; \mathrm{(stat.)} \; ^{+ 0.19}_{- 0.28} \; \mathrm{(sys.)} ) \times 10^{-3} \; , \nonumber \\ \mathrm{Br}(\mathrm {Z} \rightarrow \Upsilon(\mathrm{1S} + X) & < & 4.4 \times 10^{-5} \; , \nonumber \\ %% f_{\mathrm{p}} & = & (7.1 \pm 2.1 \; \mathrm{(stat.)} \; \pm 1.2 \; \mathrm{(sys.)} \; ^{+1.5}_{-0.8} \;\mathrm{(theo.)} ) \times 10^{-2} \; . \nonumbe
Study of Neutral-Current Four-Fermion and ZZ Production in Collisions at = 183 GeV
Study of Neutral--Current Four--Fermion and ZZ \\ Production in Collisions at 183 GeV A study of neutral--current four--fermion processes is performed using a data sample corresponding to 55.3~pb of integrated luminosity collected by the L3 detector at LEP at an average centre--of--mass energy of 183~\GeV. The neutral--current four--fermion cross sections for final states with a pair of charged leptons plus jets and with four charged leptons are measured to be consistent with the Standard Model predictions. Events with fermion pair masses close to the Z boson mass are selected in all observable final states and the ZZ production cross section is measured to be %\begin{center} %\end{center} in agreement with the Standard Model expectation. No evidence for the existence of anomalous triple gauge boson ZZZ and ZZ couplings is found and limits on these couplings are set
