    Climate reconstruction from Barrow Island, Western Australia

    Barrow Island ( 20.7°S) is ideally situated to register the first coastal occupations in Australia as well as peoples' responses to major changes in sea level, climate and eventual isolation from critical resources on the mainland. Its location in the arid region between monsoonal and extratropical rainfall belts also imply that Barrow Island may have experienced dramatic changes in precipitation over the period of human occupation. Boodie cave has been the focus of Barrow Island Archeological Project and records a rich record of human occupation. Also present at Boodie cave are significant quantities of water-lain cave carbonates (flowstones, stalactites, and stalagmites). Active (modern) deposition of such carbonates is limited to very small encrustations and consists primarily of stalactites that are less than 5 cm in diameter. This situation indicates that deposition of significant carbonates is indicative of wetter conditions at Barrow Island and dating of these carbonates using the U/Th method provides a record of wet intervals at Barrow Island over the last 120 thousand years. In addition to ages from flowstones, three complete speleothems were collected Ledge Cave for climatic reconstruction using stable isotopes. Ledge cave is large subterranean with high relative humidity (>98%) and abundant, but largely inactive speleothems. The wettest interval in our cave carbonate record predates stratigraphic units with cultural material, but indicates that wet intervals on Barrow Island were broadly coincidental with lake expansions on the Australian mainland. In particular, a very wet interval between 120 and 90 ka is recorded in two of the Ledge Cave speleothems. The Barrow Island speleothem record suggests that displacement of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and the strength of the Indo-Australian monsoon may have been the most important influence on water balance at Barrow Island. Continued development of these climate archives will offer insights into climate that is directly applicable to the unique human occupation record also preserved at this site

    Design and Topology Optimisation of Tissue Scaffolds

    Tissue restoration by tissue scaffolding is an emerging technique with many potential applications. While it is well-known that the structural properties of tissue scaffolds play a critical role in cell regrowth, it is usually unclear how optimal tissue regeneration can be achieved. This thesis hereby presents a computational investigation of tissue scaffold design and optimisation. This study proposes an isosurface-based characterisation and optimisation technique for the design of microscopic architecture, and a porosity-based approach for the design of macroscopic structure. The goal of this study is to physically define the optimal tissue scaffold construct, and to establish any link between cell viability and scaffold architecture. Single-objective and multi-objective topology optimisation was conducted at both microscopic and macroscopic scales to determine the ideal scaffold design. A high quality isosurface modelling technique was formulated and automated to define the microstructure in stereolithography format. Periodic structures with maximised permeability, and theoretically maximum diffusivity and bulk modulus were found using a modified level set method. Microstructures with specific effective diffusivity were also created by means of inverse homogenisation. Cell viability simulation was subsequently conducted to show that the optimised microstructures offered a more viable environment than those with random microstructure. The cell proliferation outcome in terms of cell number and survival rate was also improved through the optimisation of the macroscopic porosity profile. Additionally artificial vascular systems were created and optimised to enhance diffusive nutrient transport. The formation of vasculature in the optimisation process suggests that natural vascular systems acquire their fractal shapes through self-optimisation

    Uncatalyzed synthesis, thermal and mechanical properties of polyurethanes based on poly(epsilon-caprolactone) and 1,4-butane diisocyanate with uniform hard segment

    Polyurethanes based on poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) (750-2800g/mol) and 1,4-butane diisocyanate (BDI) with different soft segment lengths and constant uniform hard segment length were synthesized in absence of catalysts for the production of a degradable meniscus scaffold. First the polyesterdiols were endcapped with BDI yielding a macrodiisocyanate with a minimal amount of side reactions and a functionality of 2.0. Subsequently, the macrodiisocyanates were extended with 1,4-butanediol in order to obtain the corresponding polyurethane. The polyurethanes had molecular weights between 78 and 160 kg/mol.Above molar masses of 1900 g/mol of the polyesterdiol crystalline PCL was found while the hard segment showed an increase in melting point from 78 to 122 degreesC with increasing hard segment content. It was estimated that the percentage crystallinity of the hard segment varied between 92 and 26%. The Young's modulus varied between 30 and 264 MPa, the strain at break varied between 870 and 1200% and tear strengths varied between 97 and 237 kJ/m(2). (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd.     Percutaneous Radiofrequency Ablation of Osteoid Osteomas with Use of Real-Time Needle Guidance for Accurate Needle Placement: A Pilot Study

    Contains fulltext : 97211.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access)PURPOSE: To evaluate the accuracy and technical success of positioning a radiofrequency ablation (RFA) electrode in osteoid osteomas by use of a new real-time needle guidance technology combining cone-beam computed tomography (CT) and fluoroscopy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Percutaneous RFA of osteoid osteomas was performed in five patients (median age 18 years), under general anesthesia, with the use of cone-beam CT and fluoroscopic guidance for electrode positioning. The outcome parameters were technical success, meaning correct needle placement in the nidus; accuracy defined as the deviation (in mm) from the center of the nidus; and clinical outcome at follow-up. RESULTS: In all five cases, positioning was possible within 3 mm of the determined target location (median nidus size 6.8 mm; range 5-10.2 mm). All procedures were technically successful. All patients were free of pain at clinical follow-up. No complications were observed. CONCLUSION: Real-time fluoroscopy needle guidance based on cone-beam CT is a useful tool to accurately position radiofrequency needles for minimally invasive treatment of osteoid osteomas

    Minjiwarra : archaeological evidence of human occupation of Australia’s northern Kimberley by 50,000 BP

    Recent archaeological research in Australia’s north-eastern Kimberley has luminescence dated a large red sedimentary feature, known as Minjiwarra, with artefacts in stratified contexts from the late Holocene to ∼50,000 years ago. This site is located on the Drysdale River, with preliminary excavations undertaken as part of an ARC Linkage Project. Deeply stratified sites in association with rockshelters are uncommon across the NE Kimberley and basal dates at open cultural deposits vary greatly. Most of them are mid-Holocene in age. However, Minjiwarra appears to cover the entire span of potential human occupation in this region, with associated lithic technology, reported on here
