Opto-PCB: Three demonstrators for optical interconnections
We report on a research project targeting optical waveguide integrated PCBs conducted within the European FP6
Network of Excellence on Micro-Optics NEMO. For three identified feature requests we have built three specific demonstrators
respectively addressing the integration of active components, the fabrication of peripheral fibre ribbons and the integration of
multiple layers of waveguides on the board
Coping with infertility: a body-mind group intervention programme for infertile couples
BACKGROUND: The recognition of the distressing character of infertility diagnosis and treatment has led to the development of several psychosocial interventions for infertile couples. At the Leuven University Fertility Centre, a body-mind marital group intervention was developed to help infertile couples cope with the distress related to infertility. METHODS AND RESULTS: This treatment programme was originally adapted from a mind-body approach, but integrated concepts and techniques from body-oriented therapy, art therapy and multi-family group therapy. In this paper, the therapeutic foundations, treatment goals and practical implications of the mind-body marital group intervention are outlined. Further, the treatment procedure is explained in detail and illustrated by clinical vignettes. CONCLUSIONS: Although the first clinical impressions about the usefulness of the body-mind group programme in fertility clinics seem promising, further research is needed to assess its effectivenes
Evaluation of seven commercial African swine fever virus detection kits and three Taq polymerases on 300 well-characterized field samples
peer reviewedAfrican swine fever virus (ASFV) is a complex double stranded DNA virus, responsible for a highly infectious and fatal disease in pigs and boars and for important deterioration of animal welfare. Over the last decade, the disease spread to several European and Asian countries causing unprecedented dramatic economic losses in pig industry. In the absence of a vaccine, affected countries rely on trustful diagnostic tests and adapted testing policies to set up control programs to fight against the disease. In this study, we evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of seven commercially available ASFV real-time PCR detection kits and three Taq polymerases on 300 well-characterized wild boar samples collected in Belgium during the 2018–2019 outbreak. This study confirms that all commercial kits and two Taq polymerases are suitable for ASFV detection in diagnostic laboratories. Furthermore, the use of endogenous controls is emphasized when testing field samples harvested on carcasses in an advanced stage of decomposition, in order to avoid false negative results. © 2020 Elsevier B.V
The effects of crisis plans for patients with psychotic and bipolar disorders: A randomised controlled trial
Background: Crises and (involuntary) admissions have a strong impact on patients and their caregivers. In some countries, including the Netherlands, the number of crises and (involuntary) admissions have increased in the last years. There is also a lack of effective interventions to prevent their occurrence. Previous research has shown that a form of psychiatric advance statement - joint crisis plan - may prevent involuntary admissions, but another study showed no significant results for another form. The question remains which form of psychiatric advance statement may help to prevent crisis situations. This study examines the effects of two other psychiatric advance statements. The first is created by the patient with help from a patient's advocate (Patient Advocate Crisis Plan: PACP) and the second with the help of a clinician only (Clinician facilitated Crisis Plan: CCP). We investigate whether patients with a PACP or CCP show fewer emergency visits and (involuntary) admissions as compared to patients without a psychiatric advance statement. Furthermore, this study seeks to identify possible mechanisms responsible for the effects of a PACP or a CCP. Methods/Design: This study is a randomised controlled trial with two intervention groups and one control condition. Both interventions consist of a crisis plan, facilitated through the patient's advocate or the clinician respectively. Outpatients with psychotic or bipolar disorders, who experienced at least one psychiatric crisis during the previous two years, are randomly allocated to one of the three groups. Primary outcomes are the number of emergency (after hour) visits, (involuntary) admissions and the length of stay in hospital. Secondary outcomes include psychosocial fun
