Submitted to AIP Conf. Proc., contribution to the Proceedings of the International Symposium on Exotic Nuclei EXON 2006 (Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, 2006 July 17th-22nd) - Soumis à AIP conf. Proc. The Institute of Nuclear Physics of Orsay has built in the Tandem building an ISOL device based on photofission induced by a 50-MeV electron-beam~: ALTO (\textbf{A}ccélérateur \textbf{L}inéaire auprès du \textbf{T}andem d'\textbf{O}rsay). The project has been dimensioned to obtain 101110^{11} fissions/s inside an UCx_x target. The objective of this facility is twofold~: ensure the development of the physics with beams at extraction-energy of fission products and to serve as a test bench for certain aspects of the R\&D for the SPIRAL2 project. The first electron beam has been extracted from the LINAC in december 2005 and a UCx_x-target/ion-source ensemble has been irradiated for the first time in june 2006. The effective yields of the non-refractory fission fragments after extraction and mass separation have been measured during this experiment and are similar to the calculated predictions

' "Not One of Us": Barack Obama, the "Paranoid Style", and the Polarization of American Politics'

Divided into six sections, (The African American Criminal in Culture and Media; Slave Voices and Bodies in Poetry and Plays; Representing African American Gender and Sexuality in Pop-Culture and Society; Black Cultural Production in Music and Dance; Obama and the Politics of Race; and Ongoing Realities and the Meaning of 'Blackness') this book is an engaging collection of chapters, varied in critical content and theoretical standpoints, linked by their intellectual stimulation and fascination with African American life, and questioning how and to what extent American culture and society is 'past' race

And the Saints Go Marching Out - Rule 1100: Pennsylvania\u27s Implementation of the Right to a Speedy Trial

    Get PDF
An accused\u27s right to a speedy trial has deep roots in our Anglo- Saxon common law and is guaranteed by the Federal Constitution and most state constitutions. Traditionally, whether this right was violated was determined by a balancing test. Pennsylvania has, however, adopted a per se approach, and the author questions whether, in view of the interests the right is intended to protect, such a rule is necessary or wise

Design of an innovative exoskeletal forearm-wrist mechanism

    Get PDF
International audienceThis paper presents an innovative 3-joints structure designed as the forearm-wrist of a force controlled exoskeleton. It is composed of an open parallel mechanism both fitting the human forearm and able to rotate on its longitudinal joint (prono-supination), in a similar manner of the ulna-radius movement. This structure advantageously replaces circular guidings in terms of mass, volume and friction and can be freely scaled. A lightweight 3 dof forearm-wrist mechanism is proposed as an integral rotation module for the general-purpose arm exoskeleton ABLE 7 D

Sculpting Cerebral Cortex with Serotonin in Rodent and Primate

    Get PDF
The mammalian cerebral cortex is critical for sensory and motor integrations and, for higher-order cognitive functions. The construction of mammalian cortical circuits involves the coordinated interplay between cellular processes such as proliferation, migration and differentiation of neural and glial cell subtypes followed by accurate connectivity evolving in complexity in primates. Alteration in cortical development may induce the emergence of various pathological traits and behaviours. Among the large array of factors that regulate the assembly of cortical circuits, serotonin (5-HT) plays important role as a developmental signal that impacts on a broad diversity of cellular processes. 5-HT plays distinct roles during specific sensitive periods and is produced from various sources depending on the perinatal stage. Its roles are mediated by more than fourteen 5-HT receptors that are all G-protein coupled receptors except the ionotropic 5-HT type 3A receptor (5-HT3A) mediating rapid neuronal activation. Importantly, 5-HT metabolism and signalling are influenced by numerous epigenetic and genetic factors, including nutrition and gut microbiota, perinatal stress, infection and inflammation. In this review, we will recapitulate some evidences showing that dysregulation of 5-HT homeostasis and 5-HT3A signalling impairs distinct steps of cortical circuit formation leading to the predisposition of the onset of various psychiatric diseases

Raman spectroscopy, a non-destructive solution to the study of glass and its alteration

    Get PDF
This paper presents the potential of Raman spectroscopy, a non-destructive technique which can be applied in-situ, for the analyses of glass and their alteration. Recent analytical developments are summarised for different glass composition and practical examples are given. The paper describes how to extract compositional information from the glass, first based on the spectra profile to distinguish rapidly alkali silicate from alkaline-earth alkali silicate and lead alkali silicate glass, then using the spectral decomposition and correlations to extract quantitative data. For alkali silicate glasses, that are most prone to alteration, the spectral characteristics are described to interpret the alteration process (selective leaching or dissolution of the glass) from the Raman spectra of the altered glass. These developments have greatly widened the potential of the technique and supplement well its ability to measure the thickness of the altered layer and identify the crystalline deposits

Three-dimensional scanning of specular and diffuse metallic surfaces using an infrared technique

    Get PDF
For the past two decades, the need for three-dimensional (3-D) scanning of industrial objects has increased significantly and many experimental techniques and commercial solutions have been proposed. However, difficulties remain for the acquisition of optically non-cooperative surfaces, such as transparent or specular surfaces. To address highly reflective metallic surfaces, we propose the extension of a technique that was originally dedicated to glass objects. In contrast to conventional active triangulation techniques that measure the reflection of visible radiation, we measure the thermal emission of a surface, which is locally heated by a laser source. Considering the thermophysical properties of metals, we present a simulation model of heat exchanges that are induced by the process, helping to demonstrate its feasibility on specular metallic surfaces and predicting the settings of the system. With our experimental device, we have validated the theoretical modeling and computed some 3-D point clouds from specular surfaces of various geometries. Furthermore, a comparison of our results with those of a conventional system on specular and diffuse parts will highlight that the accuracy of the measurement no longer depends on the roughness of the surface
