Towards a statement of the S-adic conjecture through examples

The $S$-adic conjecture claims that there exists a condition $C$ such that a sequence has a sub-linear complexity if and only if it is an $S$-adic sequence satisfying Condition $C$ for some finite set $S$ of morphisms. We present an overview of the factor complexity of $S$-adic sequences and we give some examples that either illustrate some interesting properties or that are counter-examples to what could be believed to be "a good Condition $C$".Comment: 2

L'objet de cet article est l'analyse du roman de Jules Verne "Paris au XX siècle", écrit en 1863 et inédit jusqu'a 1994. Il s'agit d'un roman d'imagination scientifique parce qu'il décrit et anticipe, avec une exactitude surprenante, comment sera Paris pendant la deuxieme moitié du XX siècle, sous un point de vue urbanistique, technologique, économique et social. Jules Verne apparait également comme un écrivain philosophe, avec une vision péssimiste du progrès de la civilisation et de la solitude de l'homme moderne. Avec ce roman l'écrivain révèle surtout sa dimension de romancier car il nous invite à voyager à travers la littérature. Jules Verne arrive ainsi a une harmonie entre Science et Imaginaire.The aim of this article has been to analyse the book by Jules Verne "Paris au XX siècle", which was written in 1863 and edited in 1994. It is based on a surpridingly accurate scientific prediction of the technological, economical and social events to occur in Paris during the second half of the twentieth century. Jules Verne appears itself as a philosophical writer with a pessimistic point of view with regards to the scientific progress, the civilization and the human loneliness. Fraction of the radial velocity stable stars in the early observations of the Grid Giant Star Survey

The GGSS is a partially-filled, all-sky survey to identify K-giant stars with low level of RV-variability. We study histograms of the radial velocity (RV) variability obtained in the early phase of the Grid Giant Star Survey (GGSS, Bizyaev et al., 2006). This part of the survey has been conducted with a very limited nubmer of observations per star, and rough accuracy. We apply the Monte-Carlo simulations to infer a fraction of the RV-stable stars in the sample. Our optimistic estimate is that 20% of all considered K-giants have RV-variability under 30 m s$^{-1}$. Different assumptions of intrinsic RV-variability for our stars give 12 -- 20 % of RV-stable K-giants in the studied sample.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures, to be published in PAS

Dans L'île mystérieuse, J. Verne imite Robinson Crusoé dont les principaux épisodes sont repris, avec toutefois un décalage dû au nombre des naufragés et à leurs connaissances. Le roman de Verne comporte aussi une parodie de Robinson en insérant l'épisode d'Ayrton, abandonné sur une île où il devient semblable à un animal. Avec la présence cachée de Nemo dans l'île, la robinsonnade prend une allure artificielle.
