Effects of isothermal oxidation on the local wear behaviour of laser cladded Inconel 625 coatings

    Get PDF
Ni-based alloys, such as Inconel superalloys, are characterized by high strength, excellent fabricability (including joining), and outstanding corrosion resistance. However, their use is limited by their high cost. Ni-based coatings are used on carbon steel components in order to increase their service life under extreme conditions. Laser cladding deposition has emerged as an excellent method for processing Ni-based coatings. In this work, the evolution of the local wear behaviour of Inconel 625 laser cladded coatings after high temperature isothermal oxidation treatments have been investigated. The authors would like to thank the Spanish government CICYT through grants MAT2010-18916 and MAT2013-41784-R, the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos project URJC-CM-2010-CET-5550 and the European Union Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) under grant agreement number 605207 for financial support

Implementing the Five-A Model of technical refinement: Key roles of the sport psychologist

    Get PDF
There is increasing evidence for the significant contribution provided by sport psychologists within applied coaching environments. However, this rarely considers their skills/knowledge being applied when refining athletes’ already learned and well-established motor skills. Therefore, this paper focuses on how a sport psychologist might assist a coach and athlete to implement long-term permanent and pressure proof refinements. It highlights key contributions at each stage of the Five-A Model—designed to deliver these important outcomes—providing both psychomotor and psychosocial input to the support delivery. By employing these recommendations, sport psychologists can make multiple positive contributions to completion of this challenging task

A Reciprocal Cell–Cell Interaction Mediated by NT-3 and Neuregulins Controls the Early Survival and Development of Sympathetic Neuroblasts

    Get PDF
Neurotrophin 3 (NT-3) can support the survival of some embryonic sympathetic neuroblasts before they become nerve growth factor dependent. We show that NT-3 is produced in vivo by nonneuronal cells neighboring embryonic sympathetic ganglia. NT-3 mRNA is produced by these nonneuronal cells in vitro and is up-regulated by platelet-derived growth factor, ciliary neurotrophic factor, and glial growth factor 2 (a neuregulin). Nonneuronal cell–conditioned medium promotes survival and induces TrkA expression in isolated sympathetic neuroblasts, and this activity is blocked by anti-NT-3 antibody. Neuroblasts also enhance NT-3 production by nonneuronal cells. Neuroblasts synthesize several forms of neuregulin, and antibodies to neuregulin attenuate the effect of the neuroblasts on the nonneuronal cells. These data suggest a reciprocal cell–cell interaction, in which neuroblast-derived neuregulins promote NT-3 production by neighboring nonneuronal cells, which in turn promotes neuroblast survival and further differentiation

Cosmic Swarms: A search for Supermassive Black Holes in the LISA data stream with a Hybrid Evolutionary Algorithm

We describe a hybrid evolutionary algorithm that can simultaneously search for multiple supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) inspirals in LISA data. The algorithm mixes evolutionary computation, Metropolis-Hastings methods and Nested Sampling. The inspiral of SMBHBs presents an interesting problem for gravitational wave data analysis since, due to the LISA response function, the sources have a bi-modal sky solution. We show here that it is possible not only to detect multiple SMBHBs in the data stream, but also to investigate simultaneously all the various modes of the global solution. In all cases, the algorithm returns parameter determinations within 5σ5\sigma (as estimated from the Fisher Matrix) of the true answer, for both the actual and antipodal sky solutions.Comment: submitted to Classical & Quantum Gravity. 19 pages, 4 figure

A Marketplace-based Approach to Cloud Network Slice Composition Across Multiple Domains

    Get PDF
Cloud network slicing can be defined as the process that enables isolated end-to-end and on-demand networking abstractions, which: (a) contain both cloud and network resources, and (b) are independently controlled, managed and orchestrated. This paper contributes to the vision of the NECOS project and relevant platform, that aim to address the limitations of current cloud computing infrastructures to accomplish the challenging requirements of the slicing approach. The NECOS platform implements the Slice-as-a-Service model, enabling the dynamic creation of end-to-end (E2E) slices from a set of constituent slice parts contributed from multiple domains. A challenging issue is to define the facility that implements dynamic slice resource discovery, aligned to the requirements of the slice owner or tenant, over different infrastructure providers. Here, we propose a Marketplace-based approach implementing relevant federated interactions for the resource discovery and we detail its architecture, workflows, and information model. We also present its initial implementation details and provide both quantitative and qualitative experimental results validating its main operation

Designing Ultraflexible Perovskite X-Ray Detectors through Interface Engineering

    Get PDF
X-ray detectors play a pivotal role in development and advancement of humankind, from far-reaching impact in medicine to furthering the ability to observe distant objects in outer space. While other electronics show the ability to adapt to flexible and lightweight formats, state-of-the-art X-ray detectors rely on materials requiring bulky and fragile configurations, severely limiting their applications. Lead halide perovskites is one of the most rapidly advancing novel materials with success in the field of semiconductor devices. Here, an ultraflexible, lightweight, and highly conformable passively operated thin film perovskite X-ray detector with a sensitivity as high as 9.3 ± 0.5 Â”C Gy−1 cm−2 at 0 V and a remarkably low limit of detection of 0.58 ± 0.05 ÎŒGy s−1 is presented. Various electron and hole transporting layers accessing their individual impact on the detector performance are evaluated. Moreover, it is shown that this ultrathin form-factor allows for fabrication of devices detecting X-rays equivalently from front and back side

Expression of trk in MAH Cells Lacking the p75 Low-Affinty Nerve Growth Factor Receptor is Sufficient to Permit Nerve Growth Factor-Induced Differentiation to Postmitotic Neurons

    Get PDF
We have transfected MAH cells, an immortalized sympathoadrenal progenitor cell line, with a plasmid encoding the 140-kDa Trk protein, a nerve growth factor (NGF) receptor with protein-tyrosine kinase activity. NGF promotes neurite outgrowth and proliferation from such cells, indicating that Trk is sufficient to mediate such responses in the absence of significant levels of the endogenous 75-kDa low-affinity NGF receptor (p75). These initial NGF responses are indistinguishable from those evoked by basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF). However, NGF is sufficient to promote terminal differentiation of a {approx}8% of trk-transfected MAH cells to postmitotic, NGF-dependent neurons, whereas all cells eventually die in medium with bFGF. Other environmental signals (such as depolarization or ciliary neurotrophic factor) can cooperate with NGF to enhance production of postmitotic NGF-dependent neurons in trk-transfected MAH cells. The terminal differentiation of sympathetic neurons thus involves sequential and cooperative actions of different growth and neurotrophic factors, as well as cell-intrinsic changes in the response to these factors
