    This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows: This review seeks to examine the effectiveness of prevention interventions for MSM that combine at least two of the three categories of intervention modality (biomedical, behavioural and structural) compared either to other HIV prevention interventions or to minimal/no HIV prevention. Below, descriptions of the criteria that will be used to categorise intervention components are provided under the heading Types of interventions' and the full list of outcomes of interest are provided in the section Types of outcome measures'. All planned comparisons are detailed in the section Data synthesis', followed by the planned variables of interest for subgroup and meta-regression analyses

    This land resource survey of the Corrigin area covers some 1.8 million hectares of the central wheatbelt over the shires of Beverley, Brookton, Bruce Rock, Corrigin, Cuballing, Cunderdin, Dumbleyung, Kellerberrin, Kondinin, Kulin, Lake Grace, Merredin, Narembeen, Narrogin, Pingelly, Quairading, Tammin, Wandering and Wickepin. The survey is part of a regional scale soil-landscape mapping program designed to deliver seamless soil information for the agricultural area of south western Australia. The information provided will assist planners, researchers and land managers make decisions affecting sustainable land use and is designed for use at regional and catchment scales. This report and accompanying CD-ROM summarizes primary and interpreted information on the soil-landscapes of the Corrigin area. The report outlines the main degradation issues and supplies background information on climate, native vegetation and geology. An important additional outcome of the survey is a new theory on soil formation that has wide-ranging ramifications for agriculture, soil science, botany and geomorphology. Thirty-six soil-landscape systems, together with their component sub-systems and phases were recognised, mapped and described during the survey. This information, together with unmapped soil types and land qualities, is provided in the CD-ROM. The CD also showcases the main soils, provides geo-referenced soil pit and auger descriptions, maps of soil-landscapes and maps of selected degradation hazards

    Liquid/Liquid Extraction Kinetics of Eu(III) and Am(III) by Extractants Designed for the Industrial Reprocessing of Nuclear Wastes

    Results about the kinetics of extraction of Eu(III) and Am(III) by extractants designed for the industrial reprocessing of nuclear wastes are reported. They were obtained using the rotating membrane cell (RMC) technique. Extraction and stripping kinetic rate constants were determined for various compositions of the aqueous and organic phases. The transfer was studied at liquid/liquid interfaces between an aqueous nitric acid solution and an organic solvent containing the diglycolamide extractant molecule N,N,N′,N′-tetra-n-octyl-diglycolamide (TODGA) or a mixture of the bipyridine molecule CyMe4BTBP with TODGA (the latter being used as a phase-transfer catalyst), dissolved in an aliphatic diluent. In some experiments, an aqueous ligand (a sulfonated bis triazinyl pyridine, SO3-Ph-BTP, or a PyTri-diol) was added to the aqueous phase as a stripping agent. The diffusion coefficients of Eu(III) and Am(III), which are key in the analysis of the kinetic data, were measured using the RMC and the closed capillary technique.     Projected health-care resource needs for an effective response to COVID-19 in 73 low-income and middle-income countries: a modelling study

    BACKGROUND; : Since WHO declared the COVID-19 pandemic a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, more than 20 million cases have been reported, as of Aug 24, 2020. This study aimed to identify what the additional health-care costs of a strategic preparedness and response plan (SPRP) would be if current transmission levels are maintained in a status quo scenario, or under scenarios where transmission is increased or decreased by 50%.; METHODS; : The number of COVID-19 cases was projected for 73 low-income and middle-income countries for each of the three scenarios for both 4-week and 12-week timeframes, starting from June 26, 2020. An input-based approach was used to estimate the additional health-care costs associated with human resources, commodities, and capital inputs that would be accrued in implementing the SPRP. FINDINGS: The total cost estimate for the COVID-19 response in the status quo scenario was US52.45billionover4weeks,at52.45 billion over 4 weeks, at 8.60 per capita. For the decreased or increased transmission scenarios, the totals were 33.08billionand33.08 billion and 61.92 billion, respectively. Costs would triple under the status quo and increased transmission scenarios at 12 weeks. The costs of the decreased transmission scenario over 12 weeks was equivalent to the cost of the status quo scenario at 4 weeks. By percentage of the overall cost, case management (54%), maintaining essential services (21%), rapid response and case investigation (14%), and infection prevention and control (9%) were the main cost drivers.; INTERPRETATION; : The sizeable costs of a COVID-19 response in the health sector will escalate, particularly if transmission increases. Instituting early and comprehensive measures to limit the further spread of the virus will conserve resources and sustain the response.; FUNDING; : WHO, and UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office

    Dated Plant Phylogenies Resolve Neogene Climate and Landscape Evolution in the Cape Floristic Region

    In the context of molecularly-dated phylogenies, inferences informed by ancestral habitat reconstruction can yield valuable insights into the origins of biomes, palaeoenvironments and landforms. In this paper, we use dated phylogenies of 12 plant clades from the Cape Floristic Region (CFR) in southern Africa to test hypotheses of Neogene climatic and geomorphic evolution. Our combined dataset for the CFR strengthens and refines previous palaeoenvironmental reconstructions based on a sparse, mostly offshore fossil record. Our reconstructions show remarkable consistency across all 12 clades with regard to both the types of environments identified as ancestral, and the timing of shifts to alternative conditions. They reveal that Early Miocene land surfaces of the CFR were wetter than at present and were dominated by quartzitic substrata. These conditions continue to characterize the higher-elevation settings of the Cape Fold Belt, where they have fostered the persistence of ancient fynbos lineages. The Middle Miocene (13-17 Ma) saw the development of perennial to weakly-seasonal arid conditions, with the strongly seasonal rainfall regime of the west coast arising ~6.5-8 Ma. Although the Late Miocene may have seen some exposure of the underlying shale substrata, the present-day substrate diversity of the CFR lowlands was shaped by Pliocene-Pleistocene events. Particularly important was renewed erosion, following the post-African II uplift episode, and the reworking of sediments on the coastal platform as a consequence of marine transgressions and tectonic uplift. These changes facilitated adaptive radiations in some, but not all, lineages studied
