    Get PDF
Considering that ionizing radiation effects are cumulative and the gonads are particularly sensitive to these effects, and also the clinical importance of pelvic radiographs in children, the excess of radiation exposure to the gonads must be avoided. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the relevance of the correct use of gonad protection shields and to evaluate their use on the hip radiographs performed in a reference clinical institution, through the retrospective analysis of pelvic radiographic images performed in children. According the image quality assessment, 20 (40%) patients were unprotected and gonads shields were incorrectly placed in 24 (80%) patients.

Ionic liquids are attracting great attention nowadays due to their interesting properties which make them useful in a broad range of applications including reaction media or separation/capture of environmentally hazardous gases such as carbon dioxide. In many cases, for practical and/or economical reasons, the use of aqueous solutions of ILs would be preferable to their use as pure compounds. In this work, high pressure equilibrium data for the {carbon dioxide (CO2) + tri-iso-butyl(methyl)phosphonium tosylate [iBu3MeP][TOS] + water system were measured at temperatures ranging from (276 to 370) K and pressures up to 100 MPa. Measurements were performed using a high-pressure cell with a sapphire window that allows direct observation of the liquid–vapour transition. Mixtures with different IL concentrations were studied in order to check the influence of the amount of IL on the solubility of CO2 in the aqueous mixture. The results show that the presence of IL enhances the solubility of CO2 in the (IL + water) system revealing a salting-in effect of the IL on the solubility of CO2. The appearance of a three phase region was observed for IL concentrations higher than 4 mol% of IL in water when working at pressures between 4 and 8 MPa and temperatures between (280 and 305) K. In this range, the upper limit of the VLE region observed is shown to increase with the temperature being almost independent of the IL initial concentration in the mixture.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT)FEDERCICECO, University of Aveir

Anomalous magnetoresistance behavior of CoFe nano-oxide spin valves at low temperatures

We report magnetoresistance curves of CoFe nano-oxide specular spin valves of MnIr/CoFe/nano-oxidized CoFe/CoFe/Cu/CoFe/nano-oxidized CoFe/Ta at different temperatures from 300 to 20 K. We extend the Stoner-Wolfarth model of a common spin valve to a specular spin valve, introducing the separation of the pinned layer into two sublayers and their magnetic coupling across the nano-oxide. We study the effect of different coupling/exchange (between the antiferromagnetic layer and the bottom sublayer) field ratios on the magnetization and magnetoresistance, corresponding with the experimentally observed anomalous bumps in low temperature magnetoresistance curves.Comment: 4 pages; 3 figure

Good's Buffer Ionic Liquids as Relevant Phase-Forming Components of Self-Buffered Aqueous Biphasic Systems

A series of new self-buffering ionic liquids (ILs) based on Good's buffers (GBs) anions and the tetrabutylphosphonium cation ([P4444]+) was here synthesized and characterized. The self-buffering behaviour of the GB-ILs was confirmed by measuring their protonation constants by potentiometry. Further, their ability to form aqueous biphasic systems with the biodegradable potassium citrate salt was evaluated, and further investigated for the extraction of proteins, using bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a model protein. If these ionic structures display self-buffering characteristics as well as a low toxicity towards the luminescent bacteria Vibrio fischeri, they were additionally found to be highly effective in the formation of ABS and in the extraction of BSA - extraction efficiencies of 100% to the IL-rich phase obtained in a single-step. The BSA secondary structure in the aqueous IL-rich solutions was evaluated through infrared spectroscopic studies revealing the protein-friendly nature of the synthesized ILs. Dynamic light scattering (DLS), "COnductor-like Screening MOdel for Real Solvents" (COSMO-RS), and molecular docking studies were finally carried out to better understand the main driving forces of the extraction process. The results suggest that van der Waals and hydrogen-bonding interactions are important driving forces of the protein migration towards the GB-IL-rich phase, while the molecular docking investigations demonstrated a stabilizing effect of the studied ILs over the protein.publishe

Antidepressant responsiveness in adulthood is permanently impaired after neonatal destruction of the neurogenic pool

The dynamic turnover of hippocampal neurons is implicated in the regulation of cognitive and affective behavior. Extending our previous demonstration that administration of dexamethasone (ND) to neonatal rats depletes the resident population of neural precursor cells (NPC) and restrains the size of the neurogenic regions, we now show that the adverse effects of ND persist into adulthood. Specifically, ND impairs repletion of the neurogenic pool and neurogenesis; ND also compromises cognitive performance, the ability to actively adapt to an acute stressor and, the efficacy of glucocorticoid (GC) negative feedback. Interestingly, although ND depletes the neurogenic pool, it does not permanently abolish the proliferative machinery of the residual NPC population; however, ND increases the susceptibility of hippocampal granule neurons to apoptosis. Although the antidepressant fluoxetine (FLX) reverses the latter phenomenon, it does not replenish the NPC pool. Treatment of ND-treated adult rats with FLX also improves GC negative feedback, albeit without rescuing the deleterious effects of ND on behavior. In summary, ND leads to protracted disruption of mental functions, some of which are resistant to antidepressant interventions. We conclude that manipulation of the NPC pool during early life may jeopardize the therapeutic potential of antidepressants in adulthood. We thank Albin Varga and his team for invaluable help with animal housing and care.
