Clinical translation of nanoparticle‐based drug delivery systems is hindered by an array of challenges including poor circulation time and limited targeting. Novel approaches including designing multifunctional particles, cell‐mediated delivery systems, and fabrications of protein‐based nanoparticles have gained attention to provide new perspectives to current drug delivery obstacles in the interdisciplinary field of nanomedicine. Collectively, these nanoparticle devices are currently being investigated for applications spanning from drug delivery and cancer therapy to medical imaging and immunotherapy. Here, we review the current state of the field, highlight opportunities, identify challenges, and present the future directions of the next generation of multifunctional nanoparticle drug delivery platforms. This article is categorized under:Biology‐Inspired Nanomaterials > Protein and Virus‐Based StructuresNanotechnology Approaches to Biology > Nanoscale Systems in BiologyNovel approaches in designing nanoparticles to overcome challenges faced by traditional nanoparticle‐based drug delivery systems.Peer Reviewedhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/155963/1/wnan1625.pdfhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/155963/2/wnan1625_am.pd

Convective Heat Transfer Enhancement for Electronic Device Applications using Patterned MWCNTs Structures

This article reports on the heat transfer characteristics of columnar Vertically Aligned Multiwall Carbon Nanotubes (VA-MWCNTs) grown on a patterned Si surface. In the first part, we describe the procedure for patterning the silicon (Si) surface and the growth of MWCNTS on these patterned surfaces. The diameter of MWCNTs grown by Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) technique was in the range of 30-80 nm. In the second part structures mimicking macroscopic finned heat sinks are used for enhancing forced convective heat transfer on a silicon substrate. Convective heat transfer coefficient has been experimentally measured for silicon substrates with and without MWCNT-based fins on it. The configuration with MWCNTs based fins shows an enhancement in convective heat transfer of 40% and 20%, as maximum and average value respectively, compared to the bare silicon. Experiments have been carried out in a wind tunnel with air as coolant in fully turbulent regime. These encouraging results and the possibility of growing structures directly on silicon can be regarded as a first step

Attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most commonly diagnosed childhood disorder characterised by inattention, hyperactivity/impulsivity, or both. Some of the key traits of ADHD have previously been linked to addictive and problematic behaviours. The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between problematic mobile phone use, smartphone addiction risk and ADHD symptoms in an adult population. A sample of 273 healthy adult volunteers completed the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS), the Mobile Phone Problem Usage Scale (MPPUS), and the Smartphone Addiction Scale (SAS). A significant positive correlation was found between the ASRS and both scales. More specifically, inattention symptoms and age predicted smartphone addiction risk and problematic mobile phone use. Our results suggest that there is a positive relationship between ADHD traits and problematic mobile phone use. In particular, younger adults with higher level of inattention symptoms could be at higher risk of developing smartphone addiction. The implication of our findings for theoretical frameworks of problematic mobile phone use and clinical practice are discussed

Latin American Congress on Automation and Robotics LACAR 2019, 30/10/2019-01/11/2019, Cali, Colombia.Detection at an early stage of an infection is a major clinical challenge. An infection that is not diagnosed in time can not only seriously affect the health of the infected patient, but also spread and initiate a contagious approach towards other people. This paper deals with mHealth system for medical care and pre-diagnosis. The developed mHealth system use an Android App that collects physiological signals from the patients with a portable and easy-to-use sensors kit. The focus of the work is put on being able to build a low-cost system that using a very small amounts of data (one set record per patient and day). The processed data are uploaded to an online database to train a clinical decision support system to automatically diagnose infections. The mHealth system may be operated by the same personnel on site not requiring to be medical or computational skilled at all. The implementation takes five kinds of measures simultaneously (Electrodermal Activity, Body Temperature, Blood Pressure, Heart Beat Rate and Oxygen Saturation (SPO2)). A real implementation has been tested and results confirm that the sampling process can be done very fast and steadily Finally, the App usability was tested, showing a fast learning curve and no significant differences are observable in learning time by people with different skills or age. These usability factors are key for the mHealth system success

Functional evidence of mTORβ splice variant involvement in the pathogenesis of congenital heart defects

mTOR dysregulation has been described in pathological conditions, such as cardiovascular and overgrowth disorders. Here we report on the first case of a patient with a complex congenital heart disease and an interstitial duplication in the short arm of chromosome 1, encompassing part of the mTOR gene. Our results suggest that an intragenic mTOR microduplication might play a role in the pathogenesis of non-syndromic congenital heart defects (CHDs) due to an upregulation of mTOR/Rictor and consequently an increased phosphorylation of PI3K/AKT and MEK/ERK signaling pathways in patient-derived amniocytes. This is the first report which shows a causative role of intragenic mTOR microduplication in the etiology of an isolated complex CHD

Pre-service teachers linking their metalinguistic knowledge to their practice: A functional approach

Existing work in Anglophone countries has raised concerns regarding teachers’ knowledge about language (KAL); this may well be an issue in other countries also, with notable exceptions such as Finland. In Australia, with the introduction of the new Australian Curriculum, the question of teacher KAL has become crucial. Teachers, both practising and pre-service, generally have some knowledge about language as an object, usually including the text structures of particular school genres and information about sentence structure and word classes. This knowledge may be based on traditional grammar and may not be well applied above the sentence level. Teachers may also have an intuitive knowledge of discourse structures and are beginning to reflect on their own discourse using understandings of dialogic teaching. This paper provides an example of how first-year pre-service teachers (PSTs) were introduced to KAL at both the grammatical and the discourse levels, as part of an introductory unit on spoken language. A range of approaches was used, including a functional view of discourse. The PSTs then applied their KAL by putting it into a context that was meaningful for them: discussing their own practice. The paper gives an illustration of some of the work they produced that demonstrates their emerging understandings
