    Leucine-enriched protein feeding does not impair exercise-induced free fatty acid availability and lipid oxidation: beneficial implications for training in carbohydrate-restricted states

    Given that the enhanced oxidative adaptations observed when training in carbohydrate (CHO) restricted states are potentially regulated through free fatty acid (FFA) mediated signalling and that leucine rich protein elevates muscle protein synthesis, the present study aimed to test the hypothesis that leucine enriched protein feeding enhances circulating leucine concentration but does not impair FFA availability nor whole body lipid oxidation 56 during exercise. Nine males cycled for 2 h at 70% VO2peak when fasted (PLACEBO) or having consumed a whey protein solution (WHEY) or a leucine enriched whey protein gel (GEL), administered as 22 g 1 hour pre-exercise, 11 g/h during and 22 g thirty minutes post-exercise. Total leucine administration was 14.4 g and 6.3 in GEL and WHEY, respectively. Mean plasma leucine concentrations were elevated in GEL (P= 0.001) compared 60 with WHEY and PLACEBO (375 ± 100, 272 ± 51, 146 ± 14 Όmol.L-1 respectively). No differences (P= 0.153) in plasma FFA (WHEY 0.53 ± 0.30, GEL 0.45 ± 0.25, PLACEBO 0.65 ± 0.30, mmol.L-1) or whole body lipid oxidation during exercise (WHEY 0.37 ± 0.26, GEL 0.36 ± 0.24, PLACEBO 0.34 ± 0.24 g/min) were apparent between trials, despite elevated (P= 0.001) insulin in WHEY and GEL compared with PLACEBO (38 ± 16, 35 ± 16, 22 ± 11 pmol.L-1 respectively). We conclude that leucine enriched protein feeding does not impair FFA availability nor whole body lipid oxidation during exercise, thus having practical applications for athletes who deliberately train in CHO restricted states to promote skeletal muscle adaptations

    Il existe peu d’études rĂ©centes sur les habitudes de consommation et le comportement dans la recherche d’information musicale au QuĂ©bec et au Canada. Pourtant, les Ă©tudes rĂ©alisĂ©es sur le sujet dans d’autres pays suggĂšrent que l’évolution rapide des technologies a entraĂźnĂ© des changements importants dans les habitudes et comportements des amateurs de musique. Il est essentiel d’avoir une bonne connaissance de ces pratiques pour concevoir des systĂšmes de repĂ©rage et d’exploration de la musique qui rĂ©pondent aux besoins rĂ©els de leurs utilisateurs. Cet article prĂ©sente les rĂ©sultats d’une enquĂȘte menĂ©e auprĂšs de 278 personnes ĂągĂ©es de 18 Ă  35 ans habitant au QuĂ©bec. Les objectifs de l’enquĂȘte Ă©taient de mieux connaĂźtre les habitudes d’achat et d’écoute de musique des jeunes adultes quĂ©bĂ©cois ainsi que la façon dont ils s’y prennent pour dĂ©couvrir de nouveaux artistes et de nouvelles musiques. Les rĂ©sultats rĂ©vĂšlent que les services d’écoute de musique en continu et les sites de partage de vidĂ©os Ă©taient utilisĂ©s par 78% des rĂ©pondants. MalgrĂ© la popularitĂ© croissante de ces services, les jeunes quĂ©bĂ©cois n’ont pas totalement dĂ©laissĂ© certaines pratiques plus traditionnelles. Ils continuent de valoriser les recommandations musicales de leurs proches, d’écouter de la musique sur CD et d’acheter des fichiers musicaux, mĂȘme si ces pratiques sont de moins en moins frĂ©quentes. Very few recent studies have focused on Quebeckers’ and Canadians’ consumption and information-seeking behaviour of music for leisure. However, studies conducted in other countries suggest that the rapid evolution of technologies has resulted in important changes in practices. It is essential to gain a better knowledge of these new practices to design music information retrieval and exploration systems that meet the real needs of users. This article presents the results of a survey of 278 younger adults aged 18 to 35 living in Quebec. The objective of the survey was to increase knowledge of the music listening and purchasing behaviour of young music lovers, and to better understand how they discover new artists and new music. Results reveal that music streaming services and video-sharing websites were used by 78% of respondents. Despite the increasing popularity of these services, young Quebeckers have not entirely abandoned past practices. They still value music recommendations from friends,colleagues or relatives, listen to CDs, and purchase music files, even though these practices are becoming less frequent

    Electrolyte-Gated WO3 Transistors: Electrochemistry, Structure, and Device Performance

    Electrolyte-gated (EG) transistors, based on electrolyte gating media, are powerful device structures to modulate the charge carrier density of materials by orders of magnitude, at relatively low operating voltages (sub-2 V). Tungsten trioxide (WO3) is a metal oxide semiconductor well investigated for applications in electrochromism, sensing, photocatalysis, and photoelectrochemistry. In this work, we report on EG transistors making use of mesoporous nanostructured WO3 thin films easily permeated by the electrolyte as the transistor channel and bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([TFSI])-based ionic liquids as the gating media. The WO3 EG transistors operate at ca. 1 V. Using a combination of cyclic voltammetry, X-ray diffraction, and transistor performance characterizations, complemented by spectroscopic (Raman and infrared) investigations, we correlate the metal oxidation state and the charge transport properties of the metal oxide, shedding light on the doping process in electrically biased WO3 nanostructured thin films exposed to electrolytes
