    Incorporation of bromo-octadecane into long-chain ester monolayers at the air/water interface

    Surface compatibility of 2-methoxy ethyl stearate and oleate esters with 1-bromo-octadecane (RBr) has been investigated at the air/water interface with a Langmuir film balance. The methoxy ethyl head group in the esters promotes flat conformation at the air/water interface as observed from its higher surface area (stearate, 22.41 Å2/molecule; oleate, 57.20 Å2/molecule) in comparison to the corresponding acids. The stearate ester forms a homogeneous mixed monolayer with maximal incorporation of 0.5 mole fraction of RBr. This is indicated by the retention of liquid condensed and solid condensed phases of stearate ester, and the positive deviation of the mean molecular area of the mixed film from the calculated additive areas. When the mole fraction of RBr (x2) exceeds 0.5, the onset of formation of heterogeneous mixed film is indicated by the appearance of initial and final collapse pressures. On the contrary, oleate ester shows the least compatibility with RBr, which is indicated by the progressive decrease in mean molecular area with x2. The more liquid expanded-phase structure of oleate ester probably does not promote compatibility with RBr at the air/water interface

    How to assess the acceptance of an electronic health record system?

    Being able to access a patient’s clinical data in due time is critical to any medical setting. Clinical data is very diverse both in content and in terms of which system produces it. The Electronic Health Record (EHR) aggregates a patient’s clinical data and makes it available across different systems. Considering that user’s resistance is a critical factor in system implementation failure, the understanding of user behavior remains a relevant object of investigation. The purpose of this paper is to outline how we can assess the technology acceptance of an EHR using the Technology Acceptance Model 3 (TAM3) and the Delphi methodology. An assessment model is proposed in which findings are based on the results of a questionnaire answered by health professionals whose activities are supported by the EHR technology.     Anti-inflammatory effect of an Ayurveda polyherbal topical application and exploration of its mechanism of action

    Background: Topical application of herbs is one of the recommended treatment modalities for Osteoarthritis (OA) in Ayurveda (Indian system of medicine). The current study intended to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of a polyherbal powder used as Upanaha (poultice) for OA by in vitro and in vivo techniques. Materials and Methods: The polyherbal formulation Upanaha Choornam (UC) was sourced from Vaidyaratnam Oushadhasala (P) Ltd., Thrissur, India. Changes in the secretion of TNF-α and NO and expression of Cox-2 genes were evaluated by semi quantitative PCR activity to establish anti-inflammatory action in vitro. Macrophages and connective tissue of mice were used as media for the former two experiments and only macrophages for the latter. In vivo anti–inflammatory activity was evaluated by TPA induced ear oedema in Swiss Albino mice (n=24), divided into 4 groups as Group I - saline treatment, Group II - Indomethacin treatment, and Groups III and IV treated with 30% and 60% of UC respectively. Results: In the in vitro study, UC at 1000 ”g/ml and 500 ”g/ml upregulated the COX-2 level by 0.08 and 0.03 folds respectively as compared to control. Release of TNF-α, and NO in LPS-induced RAW cells were significantly inhibited in a dose dependent manner. The TPA induced ear oedema significantly reduced in Groups III and IV (F=1250, p<0.001) Conclusion: The current study demonstrates the safety and anti-inflammatory activity of a polyherbal formulation Upanaha Choornam as a topical application. This indicates the potential of select herbs in managing degenerative conditions like OA

    Radial distribution systems (RDS) require special load flow methods to solve power flow equations owing to their high R/X ratio. Increasing use of power electronic devices and effect of magnetic saturation cause harmonics in RDS. This paper proposes a novel algorithm to compute the power flow solution of a RDS accounting for all the harmonic components. It uses a recursive solution technique. The proposed method uses a novel dynamic data structure reported in the paper. The proposed method is tested upon a 33-bus RDS and the results are reported

    Atomic Bloch-Zener oscillations for sensitive force measurements in a cavity

    Cold atoms in an optical lattice execute Bloch-Zener oscillations when they are accelerated. We have performed a theoretical investigation into the case when the optical lattice is the intra-cavity field of a driven Fabry-Perot resonator. When the atoms oscillate inside the resonator, we find that their back-action modulates the phase and intensity of the light transmitted through the cavity. We solve the coupled atom-light equations self-consistently and show that, remarkably, the Bloch period is unaffected by this back-action. The transmitted light provides a way to observe the oscillation continuously, allowing high precision measurements to be made with a small cloud of atoms.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures.     One of the most significant social changes over the past 25 years in Tamil Nadu is the entry of women into the local political bodies of Gram Panchayat and Panchayat Samithi through a 33 % reservation system. Simultaneously, women are now to a large extent organised in Self-Help Groups, through which at least some of them can access loans either for small entrepreneurship or simply for smaller emergency/consumption loans. An important background to this is the increased participation of women in the non-agricultural labour market.     Development and in-vitro Evaluation of a Topical Drug Delivery System Containing Betamethazone Loaded Ethyl Cellulose Nanospheres

    Purpose: Lipid nanospheres are used for the passive targeting of cosmetic agents to skin, thereby achieving major benefits such as reduction of total dose and avoidance of systemic absorption. The present study was carried out to exploit the feasibility of using polymeric nanospheres as an alternative and cheaper carrier for targeting corticosteroids to the skin. Methods: Nanospheres were prepared from ethyl cellulose by a modified method of desolvation and cross linking. The drug betamethazone was incorporated into nanospheres and the drug: polymer ratio was evaluated to determine the carrier capacity of the polymer. In-vitro release studies of drug-loaded nanospheres were carried out by the centrifugal ultrafiltration method. The kinetics of release was determined and fitted to an empirical equation. The release of drug from drug-loaded nanospheres dispersing in a conventional cream was evaluated. A comparative in-vitro diffusion study was carried out between a commercial brand of cream and the cream incorporating nanospheres. Results: Formulation of nanospheres of betamethazone by a modified method produced discrete particles. Studies on drug:polymer ratio showed a linear relationship between drug concentration and percentage of loading. The in-vitro release of drug-loaded nanospheres was found to be first order. The comparative in-vitro diffusion study between the commercial cream and the formulated cream showed a marked reduction in release rate from nanospheres-bound cream. Conclusion: Formulated topical cream containing nanospheres of betamethazone was found to be a potential dermal delivery system for sustaining the release of the drug.
