Evolution of unoccupied resonance during the synthesis of a silver dimer on Ag(111)
Silver dimers were fabricated on Ag(111) by single-atom manipulation using
the tip of a cryogenic scanning tunnelling microscope. An unoccupied electronic
resonance was observed to shift toward the Fermi level with decreasing
atom-atom distance as monitored by spatially resolved scanning tunnelling
spectroscopy. Density functional calculations were used to analyse the
experimental observations and revealed that the coupling between the adsorbed
atoms is predominantly direct rather than indirect via the Ag(111) substrate.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
Growth of Patterned Surfaces
During epitaxial crystal growth a pattern that has initially been imprinted
on a surface approximately reproduces itself after the deposition of an integer
number of monolayers. Computer simulations of the one-dimensional case show
that the quality of reproduction decays exponentially with a characteristic
time which is linear in the activation energy of surface diffusion. We argue
that this life time of a pattern is optimized, if the characteristic feature
size of the pattern is larger than , where is the surface

Spatio-temporal distribution of nucleation events during crystal growth
We consider irreversible second-layer nucleation that occurs when two adatoms
on a terrace meet. We solve the problem analytically in one dimension for zero
and infinite step-edge barriers, and numerically for any value of the barriers
in one and two dimensions. For large barriers, the spatial distribution of
nucleation events strongly differs from , where is the
stationary adatom density in the presence of a constant flux. The probability
that nucleation occurs at time after the deposition of the second
adatom, decays for short time as a power law [] in and
logarithmically [] in ; for long time it decays
exponentially. Theories of the nucleation rate based on the assumption
that it is proportional to are shown to overestimate by a
factor proportional to the number of times an adatom diffusing on the terrace

Numerical test of the damping time of layer-by-layer growth on stochastic models
We perform Monte Carlo simulations on stochastic models such as the
Wolf-Villain (WV) model and the Family model in a modified version to measure
mean separation between islands in submonolayer regime and damping time
of layer-by-layer growth oscillations on one dimension. The
stochastic models are modified, allowing diffusion within interval upon
deposited. It is found numerically that the mean separation and the damping
time depend on the diffusion interval , leading to that the damping time is
related to the mean separation as for the WV model
and for the Family model. The numerical results are in

Plasticity in dormancy behaviour of Calanoides acutus in Antarctic coastal waters
Copepods that enter dormancy, such as Calanoides acutus, are key primary consumers in Southern Ocean food webs where they convert a portion of the seasonal phytoplankton biomass into a longer-term energetic and physiological resource as wax ester (WE) reserves. We studied the seasonal abundance and lipid profiles of pre-adult and adult C. acutus in relation to phytoplankton dynamics on the Western Antarctic Peninsula. Initiation of dormancy occurred when WE unsaturation was relatively high, and chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentrations, predominantly attributable to diatoms, were reducing. Declines in WE unsaturation during the winter may act as a dormancy timing mechanism with increased Chl a concentrations likely to promote sedimentation that results in a teleconnection between the surface and deep water inducing ascent. A late summer diatom bloom was linked to early dormancy termination of females and a second spawning event. The frequency and duration of high biomass phytoplankton blooms may have consequences for the lifespan of the iteroparous C. acutus females (either 1 or 2 years) if limited by a total of two main spawning events. Late summer recruits, generated by a second spawning event, likely benefitted from lower predation and high phytoplankton food availability. The flexibility of copepods to modulate their life-cycle strategy in response to bottom-up and top-down conditions enables individuals to optimize their probability of reproductive success in the very variable environment prevalent in the Southern Ocean
Calculating partial expected value of perfect information via Monte Carlo sampling algorithms
Partial expected value of perfect information (EVPI) calculations can quantify the value of learning about particular subsets of uncertain parameters in decision models. Published case studies have used different computational approaches. This article examines the computation of partial EVPI estimates via Monte Carlo sampling algorithms. The mathematical definition shows 2 nested expectations, which must be evaluated separately because of the need to compute a maximum between them. A generalized Monte Carlo sampling algorithm uses nested simulation with an outer loop to sample parameters of interest and, conditional upon these, an inner loop to sample remaining uncertain parameters. Alternative computation methods and shortcut algorithms are discussed and mathematical conditions for their use considered. Maxima of Monte Carlo estimates of expectations are biased upward, and the authors show that the use of small samples results in biased EVPI estimates. Three case studies illustrate 1) the bias due to maximization and also the inaccuracy of shortcut algorithms 2) when correlated variables are present and 3) when there is nonlinearity in net benefit functions. If relatively small correlation or nonlinearity is present, then the shortcut algorithm can be substantially inaccurate. Empirical investigation of the numbers of Monte Carlo samples suggests that fewer samples on the outer level and more on the inner level could be efficient and that relatively small numbers of samples can sometimes be used. Several remaining areas for methodological development are set out. A wider application of partial EVPI is recommended both for greater understanding of decision uncertainty and for analyzing research priorities
Changing distributions of sea ice melt and meteoric water west of the Antarctic Peninsula
The Western Antarctic Peninsula has recently undergone rapid climatic warming, with associated decreases in sea ice extent and duration, and increases in precipitation and glacial discharge to the ocean. These shifts in the freshwater budget can have significant consequences on the functioning of the regional ecosystem, feedbacks on regional climate, and sea-level rise. Here we use shelf-wide oxygen isotope data from cruises in four consecutive Januaries (2011–2014) to distinguish the freshwater input from sea ice melt separately from that due to meteoric sources (precipitation plus glacial discharge). Sea ice melt distributions varied from minima in 2011 of around 0 % up to maxima in 2014 of around 4–5%. Meteoric water contribution to the marine environment is typically elevated inshore, due to local glacial discharge and orographic effects on precipitation, but this enhanced contribution was largely absent in January 2013 due to anomalously low precipitation in the last quarter of 2012. Both sea ice melt and meteoric water changes are seen to be strongly influenced by changes in regional wind forcing associated with the Southern Annular Mode and the El Niño–Southern Oscillation phenomenon, which also impact on net sea ice motion as inferred from the isotope data. A near-coastal time series of isotope data collected from Rothera Research Station reproduces well the temporal pattern of changes in sea ice melt, but less well the meteoric water changes, due to local glacial inputs and precipitation effects
