    A Qualitative Analysis of Medical Students' Views of Their First Psychiatry Rotation

    Objective: The importance of student’s perspectives in informing curricula and pedagogy has long been recognised. However, student’s perspectives are rarely reported in the academic literature. Therefore this study explores and reports on medical student’s perspectives of their first psychiatry clinical rotation in a ‘new’ era medical school in Australia. Method: Seventy-three graduate entry medical students completed a semi-structured questionnaire about their experiences during a mental health rotation. The responses were analysed and coded into thematic categories. Results: The following thematic categories were evident; staff, breadth of experience, attitudes towards mental health, course materials and structure, and professional development. Conclusion: The results are discussed in the context of the current academic recommendations for the teaching of psychiatry and behavioural science to medical students. Although the use of student feedback is recommended by the literature, pragmatically it is rarely utilised and if it is utilised it is not reported in the academic literature. It is recommended that educators embrace the use of student’s perspectives to evaluate and inform their teaching

Individuals, communities, and industries in the GBR catchment depend directly or indirectly on the GBR for ecosystem goods and services.     Assessment and monitoring of the human dimensions within the Reef 2050 Integrated Monitoring and Reporting Program: final report of the Human Dimensions Expert Group

    [Extract] The National Environmental Science Programme (NESP) Project 3.2.2 and funds provided through the Reef 2050 Integrated Monitoring and Reporting Program (RIMReP) have provided a methodology for assessing and monitoring the Great Barrier Reef (Reef)’s human dimensions as a key mechanism to support governance and management of the World Heritage Area. The work has used a conceptual framework to identify appropriate sets of indicators for characterising the desired state of the Reef’s human dimensions at the whole-of-Reef and regional scales. Using this framework, 25 indicator attributes that describe people’s relationship with the Reef were grouped into five key attribute clusters which align with the Reef 2050 Long-Term Sustainability Plan (Reef 2050 Plan) Outcomes. These are: (i) human aspirations, capacities and stewardship associated with the Reef; (ii) community vitality related to Great Barrier Reef outcomes; (iii) economic values related to Great Barrier Reef outcomes; (iv) culture and heritage related to the Reef; and (v) the health of governance systems affecting Reef outcomes. This work was undertaken with collaboration and input from the Reef-wide (RIMReP) Human Dimensions Expert Group and six Regional Discussion Panels in the Reef catchment. Populating this framework to determine the state of the human dimensions associated with the Reef requires a rich evidence base. As a result of this work, alignment of the human dimensions framework with Reef 2050 Plan targets, objectives and outcomes has revealed several significant gaps for monitoring implementation of the Reef 2050 Plan.An accessible copy of this report is not yet available from this repository, please contact [email protected] for more information

    Capillary deformations of bendable films

    We address the partial wetting of liquid drops on ultrathin solid sheets resting on a deformable foundation. Considering the membrane limit of sheets that can relax compression through wrinkling at negligible energetic cost, we revisit the classical theory for the contact of liquid drops on solids. Our calculations and experiments show that the liquid-solid-vapor contact angle is modified from the Young angle, even though the elastic bulk modulus (E) of the sheet is so large that the ratio between the surface tension γ and E is of molecular size. This finding establishes a new type of “soft capillarity” that stems from the bendability of thin elastic bodies rather than from material softness. We also show that the size of the wrinkle pattern that emerges in the sheet is fully predictable, thus resolving a puzzle noticed in several previous attempts to model “drop-on-a-floating-sheet” experiments, and enabling a reliable usage of this setup for the metrology of ultrathin films

    This research is aimed to analyze the influence of Local Government Measurement Ratio toward the Capital Expenditure for Public Services.The samples which are use in this research are regency/municipality of Riau province that report routine the realization report of the estimate income of regional expense (APBD) from 2009 until 2012 for Dirjen Perimbangan Keuangan Pemerintah Daerah(www.djpkpd.go.id). The sampling method used in this study is the sample selection aims (purposive sampling method). The stastical method used to test the research hypothesis is multiple regression using SPSS 18 software.The results of this research show that The Autonomy rate has negative influence toward the capital expenditure for public service. The effectiveness rate has positive influence toward capital expenditure for public service. The efficiency rate has negative influence toward capital expenditure for public service. Fund Local Own Revenue (PAD) has positive influence toward capital expenditure for public service , and the General Allocation Fund (DAU) have a significant effect on the Capital Expenditure for public servic

    Analysis of the OSU-MASLWR 001 and 002 tests by using the TRACE code

    The Oregon State University (OSU) has constructed, under a U.S. Department of Energy grant, a scaled integral test facility to examine natural circulation phenomena characterizing the Multi-Application Small Light Water Reactor (MASLWR) design. The MASLWR is a small modular PWR relying on natural circulation during both steady-state and transient operation, which includes an integrated helical coil steam generator within the reactor pressure vessel. Testing has been conducted in order to assess the operation of the prototypical MASLWR under normal full pressure and full temperature conditions and to assess the passive safety systems performance. The experimental data produced are useful also for the assessment of the computational tools necessary for the operation, design and safety analysis of nuclear reactors. This report describes the assessment of TRACE code predictions, conducted under the NRC CAMP program, against the MASLWR tests OSU-MASLWR-001 and the OSU-MASLWR-002, respectively. This activity has been conducted in collaboration with the Italian National Agency for the New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA), the Department of Energy of the University of Palermo, the Gruppo di Ricerca Nucleare San Piero a Grado (GRNSPG) of University of Pisa, the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Health Physics at OSU and NuScale Power Inc. In particular the OSU-MASLWR-001 test, an inadvertent actuation of one submerged ADS valve, investigates the primary system to containment coupling under design basis accident conditions; the OSU-MASLWR-002 test, a natural circulation test, investigates the primary system flow rates and secondary side steam superheat for a variety of core power levels and feed water flow rates. The assessment against experimental data shows that the TRACE code predicts the main phenomena of interest of the selected tests reasonably well for most condition

    Anomalous density dependence of static friction in sand

    We measured experimentally the static friction force FsF_s on the surface of a glass rod immersed in dry sand. We observed that FsF_s is extremely sensitive to the closeness of packing of grains. A linear increase of the grain-density yields to an exponentially increasing friction force. We also report on a novel periodicity of FsF_s during gradual pulling out of the rod. Our observations demonstrate the central role of grain bridges and arches in the macroscopic properties of granular packings.Comment: plain tex, 6 pages, to appear in Phys.Rev.

    Testing and Modeling Ethernet Switches and Networks for Use in ATLAS High-level Triggers

    The ATLAS second level trigger will use a multi-layered LAN network to transfer 5 Gbyte/s detector data from ~1500 buffers to a few hundred processors. A model of the network has been constructed to evaluate its performance. A key component of the network model is a model of an individual switch, reproducing the behavior measured in real devices. A small number of measurable parameters are used to model a variety of commercial Ethernet switches. Using parameters measured on real devices, the impact on the overall network performance is modeled. In the Atlas context, both 100 Mbit and Gigabit Ethernet links are required. A system is described which is capable of characterizing the behavior of commercial switches with the required number of nodes under traffic conditions resembling those to be encountered in the Atlas experiment. Fast Ethernet traffic is provided by a high density, custom built tester based on FPGAs, programmed in Handel-C and VHDL, while the Gigabit Ethernet traffic is generated using Alteon NICs with custom firmware. The system is currently being deployed with 32 100Mbit ports and 16 Gigabit ports, and will be expanded to ~256 nodes of 100 Mbit and ~50 GBE nodes

    Design for micro milling guidelines

    Miniaturisation of parts is emerging as an important approach to satisfy modern industrial and customer needs. Micro milling is one of the basic micromachining technologies used toproduce miniaturised components. It differs from conventional machining in that the handling and machining of very small features generates various problems. As a consequence, designers need to consider such problems during design to make micromilling more feasible. More emphasis thus needs to be placed on deriving design know-how from the other product life-phases. This paper reports the work undertaken by the Department of Manufacturing within the University of Malta to generate a set of Design for Micromilling (DFμM) guidelines that can contribute to the development to intelligent CAD for this domain.peer-reviewe
