    Laser-induced periodic surface structures:Fingerprints of light localization

    The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is used to study the inhomogeneous absorption of linearly polarized laser radiation below a rough surface. The results are first analyzed in the frequency domain and compared to the efficacy factor theory of Sipe and coworkers. Both approaches show that the absorbed energy shows a periodic nature, not only in the direction orthogonal to the laser polarization, but also in the direction parallel to it. It is shown that the periodicity is not always close to the laser wavelength for the perpendicular direction. In the parallel direction, the periodicity is about lambda/Re((n) over tilde), with (n) over tilde being the complex refractive index of the medium. The space-domain FDTD results show a periodicity in the inhomogeneous energy absorption similar to the periodicity of the low-and high-spatial-frequency laser-induced periodic surface structures depending on the material's excitation

    Nasal hyperreactivity and inflammation in allergic rhinitis

    The history of allergic disease goes back to 1819, when Bostock described his own ‘periodical affection of the eyes and chest’, which he called ‘summer catarrh’. Since they thought it was produced by the effluvium of new hay, this condition was also called hay fever. Later, in 1873, Blackley established that pollen played an important role in the causation of hay fever. Nowadays, the definition of allergy is ‘An untoward physiologic event mediated by a variety of different immunologic reactions’. In this review, the term allergy will be restricted to the IgE-dependent reactions. The most important clinical manifestations of IgE-dependent reactions are allergic conjunctivitis, allergic rhinitis, allergic asthma and atopic dermatitis. However, this review will be restricted to allergic rhinitis. The histopathological features of allergic inflammation involve an increase in blood flow and vascular permeability, leading to plasma exudation and the formation of oedema. In addition, a cascade of events occurs which involves a variety of inflammatory cells. These inflammatory cells migrate under the influence of chemotactic agents to the site of injury and induce the process of repair. Several types of inflammatory cells have been implicated in the pathogenesis of allergic rhinitis. After specific or nonspecific stimuli, inflammatory mediators are generated from cells normally found in the nose, such as mast cells, antigen-presenting cells and epithelial cells (primary effector cells) and from cells recruited into the nose, such as basophils, eosinophils, lymphocytes, platelets and neutrophils (secondary effector cells). This review describes the identification of each of the inflammatory cells and their mediators which play a role in the perennial allergic processes in the nose of rhinitis patients

    Effect of Fluticasone propionate Aqueous Nasal Spray Treatment on Platelet Activating Factor and Eicosanoid Production By nasal Mucosa in Patients with A house Dust Mite Allergy

    The relationship between the release of platelet activating factor (PAF), leukotriene C4/D4/EE (LTC4/D4/E4) and prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) from nasal mucosa in vivo was examined in 24 rhinitis patients allergic to the house dust mite (HDM). During a double blind placebo controlled cross-over study 200 μg fluticasone propionate aqueous nasal spray (FPANS) was administered twice daily for two weeks. In response to allergen provocation (100, 1 000, 10 000 Bu/ml) and during the 9.5 h after this challenge the nasal fluid was obtained by washing the nose with saline and the levels of PAF, LTC4/D4/E4 and PGD2, as indicators of mediator release, were measured at the following time-points: baseline (t = − 1/2), allergen provocation with 10 000 Bu/ml (t = 0), 3.5 and 7.5 h (late phase). After allergen provocation the levels of the mediators increased in the nasal fluids of placebo treated patients (x-fold increase to baseline: PAF, 15; LTC4/D4/E4, 12; PGD2, 1.5). In fluids of patients treated with FPANS these levels tended to decrease. At the time of provocation the levels of PAF, LTC4/D4/E4 and PGD2 showed a significant correlation. The results indicate that these mediators can be used as markers of allergic reactions against house dust mites and that fluticasone propionate aqueous nasal spray tended to reduce the release of mediators of inflammation correlated with beneficial effects on clinical symptoms in this type of allergic reactions

    Study on the correlation between plasma electron temperature and penetration depth in laser welding processes

    The plasma electron temperature has been estimated starting from the spectroscopic analysis of the optical emission of the laser-generated plasma plume during quite diverse stainless steel welding procedures (c.w. CO2 and pulsed Nd:YAG). Although the optical emissions present different spectral features, a discrete contribution of several iron lines can be highlighted in both types of welding. We have found that the electron temperature decreases as the laser power is enhanced, in static as well as dynamic conditions. Such a result could be useful to develop a closed loop control system of the weld penetration depth

    1. In view of the potential therapeutic application of specific dopamine receptor agonists in the treatment of hypertension and left ventricular dysfunction, we investigated the cardiovascular actions of the novel mixed D1/D2 dopamine receptor agonist Z1046 in awake pigs at rest and during treadmill exercise. 2. Thirteen swine were chronically instrumented under sterile conditions for measurement of systemic, pulmonary, and coronary haemodynamics. Regional blood flows were determined with the radioactive microsphere technique. 3. Z1046 (1, 10, 100 μg kg-1, i.v.) produced dose-dependent reductions in central aortic blood pressure (up to 27 ± 3%, P ≤ 0.05) in awake resting pigs which was accompanied by only minimal reflex activation of the sympathetic nervous system. The hypotensive response was principally the result of peripheral vasodilatation (system vascular resistance decreased up to 35 ± 4%, P ≤ 0.05), which was located in the cerebral, coronary, renal, mesenteric, adrenal, splenic and skeletal muscular vascular beds (vascular resistance decreased up to 30-40% after the highest dose in these beds). Only in the cerebral and mesenteric bed was the vasodilatation sufficiently large to overcome the decrease in blood pressure and result in an increased blood flow; the vasodilatation in the coronary bed was most likely due to autoregulation as neither coronary blood flow nor myocardial oxygen demand were changed significantly by Z1046. The systemic vasodilatation that was caused by the highest i.v. dose (100 μg kg-1) was accompanied by transient and minor increases in heart rate (15 ± 5%, P ≤ 0.05) and cardiac output (15 ± 5%, P ≤ 0.05) whereas after 10 μg kg-1, i.v., a slight decrease in cardiac output also contributed to the hypotension. Z1046 had no effect on pulmonary vascular resistance. 4. The systemic vasodilator responses to Z1046 (100 μg kg-1, i.v.) were sustained during treadmill exercise (2-4 km h-1 which produced heart rates of up to 233 ± 10 beats min-1), but with increasing treadmill speed attenuation of the exercise-induced increase in heart rate (-11 ± 3%, P ≤ 0.05) and hence cardiac output (-10 ± 3%, P ≤ 0.05) (as stroke volume was not altered by Z1046) contributed significantly to a lower aortic blood pressure (-20 ± 3%, P ≤ 0.05). Z1046 had no effect on pulmonary vascular resistance during exercise. 5. Oral administration of Z1046 (0.5, 1.5 mg kg-1) produced a fall in central aortic blood pressure (up to 15 ± 3%, P ≤ 0.05), which developed gradually during the first 90 min and lasted up to 4 h after administration, again with negligible changes in heart rate and LVdP/dt(max). 6. Neither non-selective α- and β-adrenoceptor blockade, nor selective α2-adrenoceptor blockade altered the vasodilator actions of Z1046, but non-selective α- and β-adrenoceptor blockade abolished the cardiac responses to dopamine receptor stimulation, suggesting that its cardiac actions were principally caused by D2-receptor-mediated inhibition of catecholamine release, whereas the vasodilator response was probably the result of vascular D1-receptor stimulation. 7. In conclusion, the novel dopamine receptor agonist Z1046 is an effective blood pressure lowering agent that elicits minimal reflex activation of the sympathetic nervous system in awake resting pigs. Systemic vasodilatation was not affected by combined α- and β-adrenoceptor blockade, which is consistent with a predominantly D1 receptor-dependent vasodilator mechanism. The hypotensive effect is maintained during treadmill exercise during which systemic vasodilatation and a lower cardiac output both contribute to the blood pressure lowering actions of Z1046. The cardiovascular profile of this orally active compound warrants further investigation of this class of drugs in experimental and clinical hypertension.</p

    Neural correlates of object identity and reward outcome in the sensory cortical-hippocampal hierarchy:coding of motivational information in perirhinal cortex

    Neural circuits support behavioral adaptations by integrating sensory and motor information with reward and error-driven learning signals, but it remains poorly understood how these signals are distributed across different levels of the corticohippocampal hierarchy. We trained rats on a multisensory object-recognition task and compared visual and tactile responses of simultaneously recorded neuronal ensembles in somatosensory cortex, secondary visual cortex, perirhinal cortex, and hippocampus. The sensory regions primarily represented unisensory information, whereas hippocampus was modulated by both vision and touch. Surprisingly, the sensory cortices and the hippocampus coded object-specific information, whereas the perirhinal cortex did not. Instead, perirhinal cortical neurons signaled trial outcome upon reward-based feedback. A majority of outcome-related perirhinal cells responded to a negative outcome (reward omission), whereas a minority of other cells coded positive outcome (reward delivery). Our results highlight a distributed neural coding of multisensory variables in the cortico-hippocampal hierarchy. Notably, the perirhinal cortex emerges as a crucial region for conveying motivational outcomes, whereas distinct functions related to object identity are observed in the sensory cortices and hippocampus

    Are language production problems apparent in adults who no longer meet diagnostic criteria for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder?

    In this study, we examined sentence production in a sample of adults (N = 21) who had had attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as children, but as adults no longer met DSM-IV diagnostic criteria (APA, 2000). This “remitted” group was assessed on a sentence production task. On each trial, participants saw two objects and a verb. Their task was to construct a sentence using the objects as arguments of the verb. Results showed more ungrammatical and disfluent utterances with one particular type of verb (i.e., participle). In a second set of analyses, we compared the remitted group to both control participants and a “persistent” group, who had ADHD as children and as adults. Results showed that remitters were more likely to produce ungrammatical utterances and to make repair disfluencies compared to controls, and they patterned more similarly to ADHD participants.     Phytophthora × pelgrandis Causes Root and Collar Rot of Lavandula stoechas in Italy.

    In 2007, Phytophthora isolates with atypical morphological and biological characteristics were found associated with root and collar rot of potted plants of Stoechas lavender (Lavandula stoechas) in an ornamental nursery in Italy. A polyphasic approach, including morphological and cultural observations, sequencing the ITS-rDNA region, the Pheca and the mitochondrial coxI genes, multiplex PCRs with primers specific for P. nicotianae or P. cactorum, as well as random amplified polymorphic DNA–polymerase chain reaction, was used to characterize these isolates. On the basis of morpho-cultural and molecular analyses, the isolates from Stoechas lavender were identified as Phytophthora × pelgrandis, a natural hybrid of P. nicotianae × P. cactorum previously reported in other European countries, the Americas, and Taiwan, as a pathogen of ornamentals and loquat plants. In pathogenicity tests using potted plants of Stoechas lavender, the P. × pelgrandis isolates, similarly to the parental species P. nicotianae, induced the symptoms observed on plants with natural infections and were reisolated only from artificially inoculated plants. Dispersal of P. × pelgrandis on this host could exacerbate the damage caused by Phytophthora root and collar rot, of which the main causal agent presently is P. nicotianae on lavender in Europe. Application of hygienic measures is important to reduce the proliferation and spread of the Phytophthora hybrids

    The Dutch Working Party on Antibiotic Policy (SWAB) Recommendations for the Diagnosis and Management of Febrile Neutropenia in Patients with Cancer

    Introduction This guideline was written by a multidisciplinary committee with mandated members of the Dutch Society for Infectious Diseases, Dutch Society for Hematology, Dutch Society for Medical Oncology, Dutch Association of Hospital Pharmacists, Dutch Society for Medical Microbiology, and Dutch Society for Pediatrics. The guideline is written for adults and pediatric patients. Method The recommendations are based on the answers to nine questions formulated by the guideline committee. To provide evidence-based recommendations we used all relevant clinical guidelines published since 2010 as a source, supplemented with systematic searches and evaluation of the recent literature (2010-2020) and, where necessary, supplemented by expert-based advice. Results For adults the guideline distinguishes between high- and standard-risk neutropenia based on expected duration of neutropenia (> 7 days versus 7 days) and in children with neutropenia, ceftazidime, cefepime, and piperacillin-tazobactam are all first-choice options for empirical antibiotic therapy in case of fever. In adults with standard-risk neutropenia (duration of neutropenia <= 7 days) the MASCC score can be used to assess the individual risk of infectious complications. For patients with a low risk of infectious complications (high MASCC score) oral antibiotic therapy in an outpatient setting is recommended. For patients with a high risk of infectious complications (low MASCC score) antibiotic therapy per protocol sepsis of unknown origin is recommended.Immunogenetics and cellular immunology of bacterial infectious disease
