Museums, now more than ever before, are committed to the inclusion of all members of society, aiming to promote similar visitor experiences for their various patrons. With the challenging mission of exhibiting and communicating humanity's common heritage, while also preserving it, the creation of an inclusive museum experience is a complex task with multiple dimensions. This article aims to contribute to the field of accessibility in museums by discussing the three main stages of designing the Wise Stones Accessible Circuit, a five-year project which aimed to enhance access at the MM Gerdau Museum in Brazil by creating an interactive tactile exhibit displaying original artifacts from the museum's collection. A participatory methodology was adopted throughout the project in which 37 professionals from multidisciplinary fields at various institutions, and 151 visitors, who performed a formal evaluation of the digital interactives, were involved. Conclusions and implications of designing accessible digital interactives, with feedback from as wide range a of visitors as possible, are presented. Although the project's main goal was to enhance the museum experience for persons with disabilities, it ended up benefitting all visitors.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Currently, the museums use different interactive technologies to communicate their exhibitions; however, it turns out that in most cases, information is not accessible to all members of the public. In this paper, we present the design of a tangible user interface to enhance accessibility in geological exhibitions, specifically for the case of visitors with visual impairments, and we also present the study’s results about how to improve the experience of those who visit museums, using this tangible media technology as an exhibitor for samples. The results showed that the interaction with the interface pleased the visitors and that it has application space ithin geological exhibitions.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Blind and visually impaired visitors experience a lot of constraints when visiting museums exhibitions, giving the ocular centricity of these institutions, the lack of cognitive, physical and sensorial access to exhibits or replicas, increased by the inaccessibility to use the digital media technologies designed to provide different experiences, among other constraints. This paper aims to present the design and implementation of an exhibitor to communicate original museum samples to blind and visually impaired patrons, without the need to be replicated, that interactively "tell stories about their lives" whenever picked up. Tests performed with 13 partially sighted and blind participants at the main exhibition museum space, demonstrated very positive evaluations regarding pragmatic and hedonic qualities of the interaction, a positive capacity to mentally conceptualize the exhibits according to the audio descriptions, and how to enhance the experience of using more exhibitors like this one during a future visit to the museum.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

A retrospective analysis of TB cases was performed, occurring from January 1995 to December 2010 in our cohort of 599 HIV positive patients. The primary outcome was the occurrence of active TB. Forty-one TB cases were diagnosed over this period of 16 years, among 599 HIV positive patients in an open cohort setting in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil. All-time lowest mean CD4 T cell count at the time of TB diagnosis was 146 and 186 cells/mm³, respectively. The mean HIV viral load was 5.19 log10 copies/mL, and 59% of the patients were on HAART. TB incidence was 1.47 per 100 person-years, for a total follow-up time of 2775 person-years. The probability of surviving up to 10 years after diagnosis was 75% for TB patients as opposed to 96% for patients with other, non-TB opportunistic diseases (p = 0.03). TB can be considered a public health problem among people living with HIV in Brazil despite of the widespread use of antiretrovirals for the treatment of HIV infection/AIDS

oint disease, specifically osteoarthritis, is one of the most prevalent and debilitating diseases affecting athletic horses. Despite technological advances in recent decades, clinical and radiographic examinations are still the most commonly used methods for diagnosis of equine osteoarthritis. Clinical data of 2872 horses were compiled and compared for this study, it were evaluated 146 cases of osteoarthritis and radiographies of 259 affected joints were reviewed in order to verify how far radiographic examination is consistent with the clinical examination, and to correlate the clinical changes with physical activity performed by horses. Records showed that osteoarthritis in the fetlock and pastern joints (digit) when displaying radiographic changes makes horses more prone to show lameness, compared to others who also have osteoarthritis with radiographic evidence, but in the tarsocrural joint. However, radiographic scores do not correlate the radiographic image with the presence or absence of lameness. The type of physical activity performed by the horses had no influence on the frequency of clinical signs of osteoarthritis. The horses with osteoarthritis had an average of 8.4 ± 3.9 years old and were used for ride, western and work with cattle. Among the breeds studied, those that most frequently had horses with osteoarthritis were Mangalarga Marchador, Crioulo and Quarter Horse.
