Disease Spreading in Structured Scale-Free Networks
We study the spreading of a disease on top of structured scale-free networks
recently introduced. By means of numerical simulations we analyze the SIS and
the SIR models. Our results show that when the connectivity fluctuations of the
network are unbounded whether the epidemic threshold exists strongly depends on
the initial density of infected individuals and the type of epidemiological
model considered. Analytical arguments are provided in order to account for the
observed behavior. We conclude that the peculiar topological features of this
network and the absence of small-world properties determine the dynamics of
epidemic spreading.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures. EPJ styl
The Bak-Sneppen Model on Scale-Free Networks
We investigate by numerical simulations and analytical calculations the
Bak-Sneppen model for biological evolution in scale-free networks. By using
large scale numerical simulations, we study the avalanche size distribution and
the activity time behavior at nodes with different connectivities. We argue the
absence of a critical barrier and its associated critical behavior for infinite
size systems. These findings are supported by a single site mean-field analytic
treatment of the model.Comment: 5 pages and 3 eps figures. Final version appeared in Europhys. Let
Sedimentation dynamics of triply-twisted M\"obius bands: Geometry versus topology
Chiral objects have intrigued scientists across several disciplines,
including mathematics, crystallography, chemistry, and biology. A M\"obius
band, an emblematic chiral structure, can be made by connecting the ends of a
strip after applying an odd number of twists. Traditionally, the direction of
the twist governs its rotational behaviour during sedimentation in a fluid.
Here, we present experimental and computational investigations of
triply-twisted M\"obius bands boasting threefold rotational symmetry that
challenge this prevailing understanding. We explore three types of bands with
different curvatures, each defined by its construction method. Experimental
observations reveal that all three types of bands align axially and exhibit
rotational motion during sedimentation. Surprisingly, for only one type of band
the spinning direction (chiral hydrodynamic response) departs from
expectations; it is not solely determined by the twist direction but changes
with the aspect ratio of the band. Numerical simulations corroborate this
observation, and an in-depth analysis of the resistance tensors of each type of
band sheds light on the possible causes of this transition. We propose that
modifications in fluid-induced drag, combined with inertial effects, underpin
this phenomenon. Our study challenges existing knowledge of chiral object
hydrodynamics, enriching our understanding of complex fluid dynamics. Moreover,
it offers transformative potential across diverse fields, promising
advancements in mixing, separation processes, and innovative passive swimmers
Study of the stress intensity factors in the bulk of the material with synchrotron diffraction
ArtÃculo de Proceedings de Congreso Internacional Fatigue2017In this work we present the results of a hybrid experimental and
analytical approach for estimating the stress intensity factor. It uses the
elastic strains within the bulk obtained by synchrotron X-ray diffraction
data. The stress intensity factor is calculated using a multi-point overdeterministic
method where the number of experimental data points is
higher than the number of unknowns describing the elastic field
surrounding the crack-tip. The tool is tested on X-ray strain
measurements collected on a bainitic steel. In contrast to surface
techniques the approach provides insights into the crack tip mechanics
deep within the sample.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional AndalucÃa Tech. The authors are grateful to the ESRF for ID15 beamtime awarded under MA-1483. Financial

Sero/subtyping of Neisseria meningitidis isolated from patients in Spain.
To know the types of meningococcal strains in Spain, we serotyped and subtyped 743 Neisseria meningitidis isolates recovered between 1990 and 1992 from patients. A great number of serogroup B, serogroup C and non-groupable meningococci reacted with the serotyping reagents while many serogroup C and non-groupable isolates did not react with the serosubtyping reagents (78.2% and 54.8% respectively); only 8.9% of serogroup B meningococci were non-subtypeable (NST). Distribution of serotypes was similar in serogroup C and in non-groupable strains. Isolates showed great variability in antigenic phenotypes (71 in serogroup B, 20 in serogroup C and 25 in non-groupable meningococci). The most frequent antigenic combinations were 4:P1.15 (39.8%) in serogroup B, 2b:NST (55.8%) in serogroup C and 2b:NST (35.6%) in non-groupable meningococci.S
