The voices of families and children in situations of social and economic vulnerability: a report of a project
Taking as a reference the data from the report of the National Observatory for the Fight Against Poverty
[1] and based on data from EU-SILC (2020), it is observed that 20% of the resident population in Portugal
was in a condition of social and economic vulnerability, which corresponds to 1/5 of the resident
population in Portugal. Another fact that the report highlights is related to the higher incidence of
vulnerability in rural areas (21.1%), which presents a higher risk of poverty than in densely populated
areas (13.3%) and medium populated areas (16.6%). Different studies such as those by Brandão [2],
and Calejon [3] reveal that there is a relationship between the condition of social vulnerability of children
and families and the school success of these children. Considering the right to quality education should
be guaranteed to all children, it is important to know how these vulnerabilities and their consequences
are perceived by families and children and how they may be conditioning their access to a quality
education provided by the schools they attend. This paper presents a project that aims to study the
paths of vulnerability and its possible causes through the voices of families and children who are in a
condition of social and economic vulnerability. To this purpose, it will address the following question:
what is the life path of families who are in a condition of social and economic vulnerability? Its objectives
are: (i) to analyse the life path of families in a situation of social and economic vulnerability; (ii) to
characterize the families in a situation of social and economic vulnerability, based on the voice of the
actors; (iii) to understand the relation between the situation of vulnerability of families and children's
school success; (iv) to analyse children's perception of their family situation and their school path; (v) to
identify relevant mechanisms to prevent and/or overcome different social and economic vulnerabilities.
Therefore, it focuses on eight families from the northern/interior region of Portugal and uses life
narratives to survey the social reality under consideration. Hence, it is qualitative research, using semi-
structured interviews with two previously developed scripts (one for adults and the other for children). It
is important to highlight the social impact of this study which will provide a deep knowledge of families
and children in situations of social and economic vulnerability, allowing a better understanding about the
impact that certain vulnerabilities may have on children's school success, and it will identify relevant
mechanisms to prevent and/or overcome them. This information is not limited to its apparent descriptive
nature, but it may constitute an important knowledge source to be considered in the development of
future intervention proposals regarding the prevention of vulnerabilities that may emerge during the
research, and, more specifically, of those that may be related to the (in)success at school of children
who experience them. This work has been supported by FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia within the Project

As complicações associadas à gravidez e os benefícios da prática de atividade física: uma revisão narrativa / Complications associated with pregnancy and the benefits of physical activity: a narrative review
Translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the Seizure Severity Questionnaire: first results
INTRODUCTION: Seizure severity and seizure frequency reduction are the goals in the treatment of epilepsy. Up to the present, there are no validated instruments or studies emphasizing initial reliability and validity of questionnaires to measure seizure severity into Brazilian Portuguese. PURPOSE: This report describes the translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the Seizure Severity Questionnaire (SSQ), an instrument to evaluate seizure frequency and severity. CASUISTIC AND METHODS: The author conceded the original English version to Portuguese translation. Later, two independent native English-speaking teachers fluent in Portuguese translated this consensus version back into English. Comparison of the back-translation with the original English version showed only a few discrepancies, and the English and Portuguese versions were considered conceptually equivalent. Thirty patients regularly treated with temporal lobe epilepsy related to mesial temporal sclerosis answered the questionnaire. RESULTS: Twenty-two adult patients (73%) were male and mean age 37. Ten (33%) reported only auras and 18 Movements or attitudes during the seizures. Two presented Loss of consciousness. For 13 (43%) there was a long time to recuperate after the event. 12 reported Emotional effects and all patients had Body effects. The majority of patients, 28 (94%) considered their seizures extremely severe and for 23 (77%) the recuperation period was the most bother symptom. The association of seizure frequency and Nottingham Health Profile showed statistical significance for the domains: Emotional well-being (p = 0.046), Pain (p = 0.015) and Sleep (p = 0.003). CONCLUSION: This study explored the cultural adaptation of SSQ and its first results. We also assessed the correlation between seizure frequency and quality of life impact. The instrument SSQ could help to understand the seizure concern in the view of the patient.INTRODUÇÃO: O tratamento medicamentoso tem como meta principal a redução da freqüência de crises ou seu controle completo.
Digital training for NGO's youth workers to become disability support moderators for youth with disabilities. 2022-2-PT02-KA220-YOU-000095234info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
A reduced, yet functional, nectary disk integrates a complex system of floral nectar secretion in the genus Zeyheria (Bignoniaceae)
ABSTRACT The genus Zeyheria (Bignoniaceae) comprises only two species, both of which have been described as possessing a reduced and non-functional nectary disk. Despite the importance of this evolutionary change in the floral nectary, these functional assumptions have been based on disk size and on the distribution, abundance and histochemistry of corolla-borne trichomes. By combining methods on light and electron microscopy, here we investigated the functionality of the reduced nectary disk and describe all of the tissues and structures of the nectar chamber in order to determine the sites of floral nectar secretion in both Zeyheria species. . Our data find the floral nectary traits of both species to be very similar, although differing in their cellular contents. Subcellular evidence in both species indicated that disk, stipe and petal axils were, predominantly, involved in hydrophilic secretion, while capitate glandular trichomes produced lipophilic secretion and papillae produced mixed secretion. Our study shows that in spite of its reduced size, the reduced disk functions in nectar secretion in both species of Zeyheria. This kind of nectary system is a novelty for Bignoniaceae, since it comprises several tissues and structures functioning in an integrated fashion
Floral biology, nectar secretion pattern and fruit set of a threatened Bignoniaceae tree from Brazilian tropical forest
Zeyheria tuberculosa, a Bignoniaceae tree that occurs in a broad latitudinal range in Brazilian forests, is a threatened species of seasonal tropical forest. It is crucial to enhance the knowledge on this species’ floral biology, since interactions related to reproduction of plants are critical for the long term maintenance of their populations. Thus, we investigated the sexual reproduction and floral biology of Z. tuberculosa, focusing on nectar features, aiming to understand the ecological processes associated to this mutualistic plant-animal interaction in the current modified landscape. For this, we performed experiments under natural conditions and laboratory. All the evaluated plants were self-incompatible. Zeyheria tuberculosa was pollinated by Bombus pauloensis, a medium-sized bee, and offered hexose-rich nectar as resource. Flowers were also visited by small-sized bee species, Trigona spinipes, that acted as pollen thief, and Pseudoaugochlora pandora and P. graminae that acted as nectar thieves. These three bee groups exhibited temporal separation in the peak of visits throughout the day. The peak of pollinator visits occurred firstly, which may allow the pollinator to access nectar and pollen loads before they are exploited by thieves. However, bee pollinator visits were scarce, and this fact, associated to the self-incompatibility of Z. tuberculosa, may explain the low fruit set registered in the studied plants. It could be of special concern for this threatened species maintenance in the medium and long term, which depends on the offspring originated by sexual reproduction
