At the author\u27s request, only the abstract for this title has been posted online. This action research project was designed to help me research and apply culturally-sustaining pedagogy, focusing primarily on strategies to support my Latinx, Spanish-speaking emergent bilinguals. In addition to general strategies to develop culturally-sustaining pedagogy for Latinx, Spanish-speaking emergent bilinguals, I researched best practices for supporting these students with learning disabilities, as well as strategies to provide culturally-sustaining literacy instruction. I then worked to apply those strategies during the 2020-2021 school year and analyzed my lesson plans, teaching journal, assignments and other materials, and observation feedback to determine my success. My results were mixed, showing that I have made some improvements but need to continue making efforts to learn about and provide culturally-sustaining teaching for my students. However, completing this project has helped me develop research and data-analysis strategies to continue professional development in this area and to address future concerns and need for improvement that will arise during my teaching career

Racial/Ethnic Differences in the Benefit of Social Networks on Anxiety Symptoms

Anxiety is a pressing health concern, affecting 40 million adults in the United States every year. Interestingly, communities of color have lower rates of anxiety disorders relative to Non-Hispanic Whites, despite on average experiencing more lifetime adversity characteristic of members of marginalized groups, such as low socioeconomic status and discrimination. Research indicates that contact with one’s social network, particularly large, closely knit ones among Hispanics, are protective factors against anxiety. However, empirical investigations of racial/ethnic differences in the benefits of social networks on anxiety are lacking. Data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), a nationally representative sample of adults aged 51 and older in the United States, were used in this investigation. The 2010/2012 waves were used to include information pertaining to self-reported anxiety symptoms. Results from a weighted linear regression indicate that Non-Hispanic Blacks and Hispanics reported more anxiety symptoms relative to Non-Hispanic Whites after adjusting for age, sex, degree of education, and household wealth. Second, reporting more social contact with children and friends was related to less anxiety symptoms. Third, racial/ethnic differences in the effect of social networks on anxiety were found, in which time spent away from children was even more strongly related to anxiety among Hispanics relative to non-Hispanic Whites. Such results indicate that Hispanics may benefit more from increased social contact with their children relative to other racial/ethnic groups in protecting against anxiety, demonstrating the importance of nurturing social networks in order to reduce anxiety in this particularly vulnerable group

Confronting Environmental and Social Crises: Octavia E. Butler’s Critique of the Spiritual Roots of Environmental Injustice in Her \u3cem\u3eParable\u3c/em\u3e Novels

We are living in the midst of environmental and social crises. This fact was not lost on late African-American science fiction writer Octavia E. Butler, whose 1993 Parable of the Sower and 1998 Nebula Award-winning Parable of the Talents depict and critique the current environmental and social crises in the United States. Speaking of Sower in an interview with Essence magazine, Butler says that all she “did was look around at the problems we’re neglecting now and give them about 30 years to grow into full-fledged disasters” (“Brave New Worlds” 164). In another interview with Randall Kenan, Butler describes environmental degradation, specifically global warming, as a primary concern within the Parable novels but also as an extension of real-world environmental degradation. She says, “The greenhouse effect has intensified and there has been a certain amount of starvation and agricultural displacement. There are real problems. Some of our prime agricultural land won’t be able to produce the crops that it’s been producing [….] These are big problems” (qtd. in Kenan 502). However, in the Parable novels, she does not separate her concern for the environment from her concerns about other social issues, such as racism, sexism, homophobia, the increasing gap between the rich and the poor, and the specific problems that social injustice creates. Indeed, the novels show that the groups already oppressed in American society—namely racial minorities, women, the poor, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered (LGBT) individuals—are most victimized by ecological disaster. These groups experience the worst conditions society has to offer, and racist, sexist, classist, and homophobic ideology is perpetuated throughout the crises. Moreover, these ideologies gain prominence as people search for scapegoats and excuses for their behavior in a time of intense competition for even basic necessities. The connection Butler makes between environmental disaster and social injustice is apt in light of environmental justice criticism that shows that American society already disproportionately victimizes minority groups with environmental degradation. Furthermore, her discussions of empathy, hierarchy, and spirituality in the novels expose some of the root causes of environmental disaster and social injustice

Neuron numbers increase in the human amygdala from birth to adulthood, but not in autism.

Remarkably little is known about the postnatal cellular development of the human amygdala. It plays a central role in mediating emotional behavior and has an unusually protracted development well into adulthood, increasing in size by 40% from youth to adulthood. Variation from this typical neurodevelopmental trajectory could have profound implications on normal emotional development. We report the results of a stereological analysis of the number of neurons in amygdala nuclei of 52 human brains ranging from 2 to 48 years of age [24 neurotypical and 28 autism spectrum disorder (ASD)]. In neurotypical development, the number of mature neurons in the basal and accessory basal nuclei increases from childhood to adulthood, coinciding with a decrease of immature neurons within the paralaminar nucleus. Individuals with ASD, in contrast, show an initial excess of amygdala neurons during childhood, followed by a reduction in adulthood across nuclei. We propose that there is a long-term contribution of mature neurons from the paralaminar nucleus to other nuclei of the neurotypical human amygdala and that this growth trajectory may be altered in ASD, potentially underlying the volumetric changes detected in ASD and other neurodevelopmental or neuropsychiatric disorders
