    Effective Hamiltonian and unitarity of the S matrix

    The properties of open quantum systems are described well by an effective Hamiltonian H{\cal H} that consists of two parts: the Hamiltonian HH of the closed system with discrete eigenstates and the coupling matrix WW between discrete states and continuum. The eigenvalues of H{\cal H} determine the poles of the SS matrix. The coupling matrix elements W~kccâ€Č\tilde W_k^{cc'} between the eigenstates kk of H{\cal H} and the continuum may be very different from the coupling matrix elements Wkccâ€ČW_k^{cc'} between the eigenstates of HH and the continuum. Due to the unitarity of the SS matrix, the \TW_k^{cc'} depend on energy in a non-trivial manner, that conflicts with the assumptions of some approaches to reactions in the overlapping regime. Explicit expressions for the wave functions of the resonance states and for their phases in the neighbourhood of, respectively, avoided level crossings in the complex plane and double poles of the SS matrix are given.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figure

    High doses of medroxyprogesterone as the cause of disappearance of adherence of the zona pellucida to an oocyte

    The zona pellucida (ZP) is an external glycoprotein membrane of oocytes of mammals and embryos in the early stage of their development. ZP first appears in growing ovarian follicles as an extracellular substance between the oocyte and granular cells. The zona pellucid markedly affects the development and maturation of the oocyte. The morphology of the ZP-oocyte complex allows a more precise determination of the oocyte maturity. According to numerous experimental studies, ZP is essential for preimplantation embryonic development of humans and other mammals. It prevents dispersion of blastomeres and enhances their mutual interactions. ZP is a dynamic structure responsible for the provision of nutrients to early forms of oocytes in mammals. The aim of the present study was untrastructural evaluation of the ZP-oocyte contact during inhibited ovulation. Female white rats (Wistar strain) received a suspension of medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) in incremental intramuscular bolus doses of 3.7 mg (therapeutic dose), 7.4 mg and 11.1 mg. The animals were decapitated 5 days after the administration of MPA. Ovarian sections were evaluated under a transmission electron microscope (TEM) Zeiss EM 900. Morphometric analysis of ZP was conducted using the cell imaging system by Olympus. In females exposed to therapeutic doses of MPA, ZP showed the structure of granular-fibrous reticulum of a medium electron density with single cytoplasmic processes originating from the surrounding structures. The oocyte cell membrane generated single, delicate processes directed toward ZP. Microvilli of the oocyte were short and thin. In the group receiving 7.4 mg of MPA, ZP had the structure of a delicate, loose granular-fibrous reticulum, and the oocyte cell membrane generated single microvilli directed toward ZP. In both those groups, the close ZP-oocyte contact was observed. Otherwise, in the group exposed to the highest MPA doses (11.1 mg), thicker and more numerous oocyte microvilli were found, which did not penetrate ZP matrix. They were dense, irregularly separated contour, forming a barrier between ZP and oocyte. The present findings are likely to suggest that MPA has inhibiting effects on the synthesis of binding proteins and causes the loss of the oocyte contact with ZP

    Music-aided affective interaction between human and service robot

    This study proposes a music-aided framework for affective interaction of service robots with humans. The framework consists of three systems, respectively, for perception, memory, and expression on the basis of the human brain mechanism. We propose a novel approach to identify human emotions in the perception system. The conventional approaches use speech and facial expressions as representative bimodal indicators for emotion recognition. But, our approach uses the mood of music as a supplementary indicator to more correctly determine emotions along with speech and facial expressions. For multimodal emotion recognition, we propose an effective decision criterion using records of bimodal recognition results relevant to the musical mood. The memory and expression systems also utilize musical data to provide natural and affective reactions to human emotions. For evaluation of our approach, we simulated the proposed human-robot interaction with a service robot, iRobiQ. Our perception system exhibited superior performance over the conventional approach, and most human participants noted favorable reactions toward the music-aided affective interaction.open0

    Reconstruction and control of a time-dependent two-electron wave packet

    The concerted motion of two or more bound electrons governs atomic1 and molecular2,3 non-equilibrium processes including chemical reactions, and hence there is much interest in developing a detailed understanding of such electron dynamics in the quantum regime. However, there is no exact solution for the quantumthree-body problem, and as a result even the minimal system of two active electrons and a nucleus is analytically intractable4. This makes experimental measurements of the dynamics of two bound and correlated electrons, as found in the helium atom, an attractive prospect.However, although the motion of single active electrons and holes has been observed with attosecond time resolution5-7, comparable experiments on two-electron motion have so far remained out of reach. Here we showthat a correlated two-electron wave packet can be reconstructed froma 1.2-femtosecondquantumbeatamong low-lying doubly excited states in helium.The beat appears in attosecond transient-absorption spectra5,7-9 measured with unprecedentedly high spectral resolution and in the presence of an intensity-tunable visible laser field.Wetune the coupling10-12 between the two low-lying quantum states by adjusting the visible laser intensity, and use the Fano resonance as a phase-sensitive quantum interferometer13 to achieve coherent control of the two correlated electrons. Given the excellent agreement with large-scalequantum-mechanical calculations for thehelium atom, we anticipate thatmultidimensional spectroscopy experiments of the type we report here will provide benchmark data for testing fundamental few-body quantumdynamics theory in more complex systems. Theymight also provide a route to the site-specificmeasurement and control of metastable electronic transition states that are at the heart of fundamental chemical reactionsWe thank E.     Clinical outcomes and cost-effectiveness of superficial parotidectomy versus extracapsular dissection of the parotid gland : a single-centre retrospective study of 161 patients

    Improvements in preoperative diagnostics and intraoperative techniques have made the surgical excision of benign parotid gland tumours less invasive. Extracapsular dissection (ECD) has become more popular in comparison to superficial parotidectomy (SP), the gold standard. Although clinical outcomes have been reported, reports on cost-effectiveness are limited. The aim of this retrospective study was to analyse the surgical outcomes and cost-effectiveness of ECD versus SP in benign parotid tumour surgery. A retrospective cohort of 161 patients treated between 2012 and 2020 was collected. Data concerning demographics, clinical outcomes, and cost-efficiency were recorded. Analysis of the 161 unilateral parotidectomy cases (59 SP, 102 ECD) showed a significantly longer operation time, anaesthesia time, and length of stay for SP patients (all P < 0.001). Regarding postoperative complications, transient facial nerve weakness (P < 0.001) and haematoma formation (P = 0.016) were more prevalent in the SP patients. The frequency of positive margins was lower for SP (P = 0.037). No case of recurrence was identified with either technique. ECD showed excellent clinical outcomes as well as a reduction in complications when compared to SP. ECD is a viable alternative for superficial benign parotid gland tumours after thorough preoperative clinical, pathological, and radiological examination. The reduction in operation, anaesthesia, and hospitalization times with ECD is likely to result in a gain in cost-effectiveness
